Have you ever just put a Whoopie on the SlackSnap table and straight pulled it to failure? I've always wondered if the loop will slip before rope breaks.

Good on ya for posting the Samson link, I was thinking 2 fids for the adjustment bury was a little short. The instructions say 3 1/2 fids for Amsteel, and the 5/16 whoopies I've made with Amsteel even with a 3 1/2 fid bury slip a little, at least compared to the Tenex whoopies I'm used to. Splicing 12 strand is super satisfying. Thanks for the fid vid!

I took your advice from this woopie sling video, and bought the Samson splice book the first paragraph states that MBS is tested/ certified with an eye splice on both ends . EG 3/8" am... Blue (sk78) eye spliced MSB IS 16200 LBS WITH OUT A DIVERTER So a proper eye splice( LOCK STICHED; NOT BRUMMELLED) dose not reduce MBS. WOOPIE SLING IS STATED AS "70% OF MSB." USING 3.5FID BURIED AND A LOCKING BRUMMEL. MAKING THE MINIMUM LENGTH FOR ANY WOOPIE 7 FID + FIXED EYE SIZE. HOWEVER THE BRUMMEL IS WHAT COST 30% LOSS OF MBS.. DO YOU WANT TO CONFIRM SAMSON'S PUBLISHED STATEMENT? THAT THE LOCKING BRUMMEL COST 30% MBS VS LOCKED STICHED IS 100% MBS. CLASS1 ROPE IS 1.5 FID BURIED CLASS2 ( AMSTEEL/ SLICK SYNTHETICS) 3.5FID BURIED.

I've read that it's actually better to not taper the backsliced end since it doesn't hold any load and will make it harder for that end to enter into the adjustable section.
@HowNOT2
@HowNOT2 5 лет назад
You mean the tail we pull on the adjust the size? That end doesn't have to be tapered but it made it easier for me to use the wire. Now i use a fid and I rarely taper anything anymore. Your right though about this.

I make whoopies for rigging my hammock from smaller dyneema, and have taken to putting a brummel locked eye on the end as a stopper. Makes for easy stowage of excess, and if you want to make 100% sure you don't accidentally undo it you can put the main brummel loop through the tail one. I'm also wondering if in your case it might give an opportunity to safety the whoopie. I've been searching your channel for a whoopie slack snap video, because I'm interested to know where they fail?
@HowNOT2
@HowNOT2 4 года назад
we have tested them... broke at 27 to 32kn and broke where we did not taper the tail (6mm whoopies). Our old ones were 19 to 22kn to 27kn so all over the place (same diameter)
@jethrofennell
@jethrofennell 4 года назад
@@HowNOT2 interesting, done any tapered? Might be worth trying. I assumed they would slip at the adjust bury, but makes sense them failing there now I think of it, and after seeing your other snaps. Loving the work you're doing here, thanks for being so enthusiastic and meticulous about your rigging, and sharing it. I'm a big fan of dyneema and splicing, and have been toying with the idea of building a break test rig, as there doesn't seem to be a huge amount of data around
@HowNOT2

@@jethrofennell nothing slipped if it was 1 fid bury or longer. Half fid length buries slipped at 17kn. PM at facebook.com/ryan.jenks.35 and i'll give you some goodies

What size tubular webbing would you add for abrasion protection on the eye?
@HowNOT2
@HowNOT2 6 лет назад
9/16" webbing would be big enough for these 1/4" (6mm) whoopies. I just checked and they slide on nicely.

Why do I have strong temptation to go make whoopie slings that my life will depend on, even though you say specifically not to do it after watching a guy on youtube make them in his kitchen...
@HowNOT2
@HowNOT2 6 лет назад
Reverse psychology might be why ;). They are not buried enough, unpadded and technically untested... therefore you shouldn't make them... even though EVERYONE makes them at home and uses them, but that is no reason to do it yourself :)
@chrissonnenschein6634

@JasperJanssen

HowNOTtoHIGHLINE at 3mm, they work very well for my hammock suspension. As long as I don’t use the ones I did with too short a bury, because that was an unpleasant afternoon (nice thing is you can just undo the stopper and the main UCR bury, redo them properly and fix the issue). But my hammock hangs “no higher than I’m willing to fall” for a reason.
@JK-ep9bz
@JK-ep9bz 3 года назад
@@JasperJanssen Agreed. I only came here because of hammocking. My hammock uses 7/64 amsteel and I decided to order more to make longer ones.

Not sure I understand what the purpose of pulling strands apart and cutting to taper before you bury? What is the purpose of cutting and pulling apart?
@HowNOT2
@HowNOT2 6 лет назад
Josh Bradybaugh some people claim it weakens amsteel to go from big to small quickly. The only reason i can think is because it isolates fibers being so low stretch. I can break test these to compare! :)

HowNOTtoHIGHLINE what brand fid is that? Is it ?From the Samson kit
@HowNOT2
@HowNOT2 6 лет назад
Josh Bradybaugh i think i got it from samson. I dont understand fids. I get a 1/4" fid and i think it ends up being outside diameter and not inside diameter so i can't put tail inside my fid which i think is the point. I have 5/8" and 1/2" amsteel (big boys) i bought a fid for both. I ended up using my 5/8" fid for my 1/2" amsteel.
@joshbradybaugh6198
@joshbradybaugh6198 6 лет назад
HowNOTtoHIGHLINE so 3/8” fid for 1/4 “ Amsteel? I know nothing about this splicing and Amsteel. Sorry for all the questions
@HowNOT2
@HowNOT2 6 лет назад
Josh Bradybaugh no problem. I recommend a 3/8 fid for 1/4 amsteel. You can also just use a pencil and tape the end of what you are splicing to the end of that pencil. But fids arent expensive and are easier
