Time lapse video travelling over the Bighorn Mountains in Wyoming along Highway 14 and 14A from Drayton to Lovell. Consider this option whilst travelling to Yellowstone from the east. Gradients on the west side of the mountains are 10% over a number of miles. I wouldn't consider this for an RV route if you're travelling from east to west, but would be fine in the other direction.
Some interesting sites include the Native American "Medicine Wheel"; a Stonehenge-like site created in the past 400 years. Plenty of lakes, trails and waterfalls on top of the range to explore. We even saw moose in the swamps!
Remember this highway is closed in the winter (this video makes it easy to see why).
Stay tuned for more time lapse videos from the American west.

Literally just drove 14a from Lovell to Dayton. 28° and 2 feet of snow at the top. Beautiful, even at night.

Did this route from Sheridan, Wyoming last September. Perfect time of the year. This is a great route, don't hurry thru this area, spot a lot get out of the car and smell the air and walk around. head to Greybull and then head for Montana and cross into Yellowstone Park from that entry point. Cody is OK, but if your coming and going from the park as a base point. Not much to see and a hour drive to get their. But the Bighorn Mountains are worth the trip. Spent two days in this area before heading into Yellowstone.

First took this ride in 1962. It hasn't changed. Just as desolate and gorgeous as ever. Thanks for posting.

Took 14 from East to West just a few weeks ago and hit blizzard conditions at 9pm at night. Not a sole up there but us in a minivan. Terrifying. 10 ft. of visibility, switchback roads, big horn sheep in the road, thunder snow, you name it. 5 mph in some areas. Got to Cody, WY only to find out that Yellowstone's East and South entrances were closed. FML.

You really shouldn't be doing this at night or in winter.

we drove it from West going East (2 1/2 years ago). didn't make it to Medicine Wheel. was told you had to hike 2 miles to it. I thought it was a pretty drive! not like The Beartooth Hwy, but it was pretty. stayed the nite in Buffalo. actually, we circled around to drive U.S. 14 & 14A

Too bad you took 14A instead of staying on 14 where you would have gone over Granite Pass and into the spectacular Shell Canyon and past Shell Falls - a MUCH more thrilling ride.

@Castle Danger is it really that steep? It looked like guardrails and concrete barriers were in place.

I think you meant Dayton not Drayton.

That's just the timelapse effect. It doesn't really capture the essence of the drive, including the hairpin turns, the 10% downhill grade, and the barely adequate guardrails. It's an absolutely fantastic drive.
