I think it's a jibe at people who would walk scornfully past a messed up druggie on the street, but get all starry eyed over messed up druggies who can sing and then weep over the "tragedy" when they die in the same way as those poor bastards who aren't lucky enough to have a voice good enough that their addiction is considered worth having compassion for.

When Miss Balding stated women race, I thought that is not correct women are not a race yet are part of all races. But then I thought of some of the men I know and thought It would be grand not to have them in our race so maybe us women could form our own race after all. No that would just make me a racist, it is better this way all men can irritate me and I am not a racist. (this is an attempt at humor, not an attempt to belittle men).
Anti Amy was the thing then. It was this that kinda bashing from celebs and the papers that caused her to go over with the booze, rather than trying to help her maybe by leaving her alone. But cheap laughs and selling papers wins over someone trying to get away from all of that.
