On 23 November 1996, Ethiopian Airlines Flight 961 is forced to ditch after running out of fuel. The aircraft breaks up as the wings hit the water, killing 125 people. The aircraft had been hijacked and ran out of fuel because the hijackers did not believe the pilot's insistence that there was not enough fuel aboard to make it to the hijackers' planned destination, Australia.

How dreadful to have saved an extra 60-80 people only for them to drown in their life jackets, because of confusion/panic. So many more people could have survived. Tragic. The pilot did an extraordinary job, especially in his circumstances. RIP.

The vacationers deserve more recognition for their heroic efforts to help the survivors. Now that's called bravery.

Captain Abate did what he could to crash land as smooth as possible. He definitely earns my respect for his bravery, professionalism and Skill. To all of us that still fly, instructions given by the pilots especially concerning safety should be followed coz most times that's how God speaks to us. May the souls of those who didn't make it continue to rest in peace 🙏

As an Ethiopian who lived to witness that tragedy, I still feel the pain of those who lost their loved ones. Captain Abate did the best he could to minimise the damage, and he did a marvellous job. We all respect him for his outstanding efforts. Correction on Mo Amin's accident that made him lost an arm; it was not a bomb explosion, it was an explosion on an artillery depot on 4 June 1991.
