I've only watched the first 5 minutes. Over the years I've followed a lot of thru hikers on YT. The last 500 miles are so hard mentally/emotionally. It's just like you said the combination of preparing to finish, realizing your time on trail will end, thinking about how long you've been away, how much longer you will be away. It's a lot. Stay strong; you've got this! Also, you talk about water a lot. I'm wondering if you are supplementing with electrolytes too. Take care of yourself!

Sodium is the most affected electrolyte affected by over hydration, leading to a condition called hyponatremia. Sodium is a crucial element that helps keep the balance of fluids in and out of cells. When its levels drop due to a high amount of water in the body, fluids get inside the cells. Then the cells swell putting you at risk of having seizures, going into a coma or even death. This has happened on numerous occasions on the Kokoda trail in Papua New Guinea.

Hiking in that kind of heat is no fun! It is tedious and exhausting! Times like this is when you miss home and loved ones more than usual. Hang in there and remember this too will pass! The weather will change as will the terrain. You will live the views when you get to the whites and the temperature will return to normal for this time of year in NH and Maine which is in the 70”s. This is an unusual heat wave. You’re doing a good job staying hydrated and seeing that Leo is also! Praying for a break in the heat, for your safety and for renewed joy in the journey!

I know that the last stretch is the hardest! The separation from your family is temporary, the trail is temporary, and you have some of the toughest parts of the trail left to go but I believe in you and Im sure your wife does too! This one scared me. SALTs and sugars are essential in a struggling super heated human body. Leo is really dragging in this video, too. Give yourself extra time and get rest under AC to recharge and cool your core AND extra rest day(s)- these are essentials not luxuries with brutal heat! Smart to hit the streams often when you are out there. Bigger miles will come on better weather days! Please take care of yourselves. We care about you and Leo!

There is a heat wave hitting the entire eastern section ( also other areas). Hit 103 in our part of Ga. Yesterday ( 6/25). You are being very smart cooling down in the creeks. Leo could probably benefit from a good spa day when the opportunity arrives. He sure is a champ on the trail. You are making smart choices. CARPE DIEM

My heart is with you guys. Just take it easy and keep pushing forward. when you get to be as old as I am and you look back on this you will be so happy that you accomplished this. My husband was in the military and there were so many times that he was gone for a year or six months. And it was a very hard time, but I don’t even hardly remember the separation anymore. Just the good times. But This is a memory that you will keep for a lifetime. Your family will be OK and you will be OK and you will have these memories forever. ❤❤❤❤❤

Hang in there MS. You're so close but yet not close enough. Im sorry your in a down mood right now. And you can see Leo picked up on it too, hes kinda moping too. I wish it wasnt so hot for all the AT hikers right now. Praying that things cool off or at least you find a place to cool off. You're right, its very dangerous hiking in the heat and things can change so quickly when youve become dehydrated. Make sure you and Leo drink lots before you feel thirsty. Theres also somethings you can give Leo for electrolyte. Chicken broth is one thats safe and theres others you can look up. Some say kids pedilyte is ok for dogs, some say not. My dog would need an Iv for dehydration if she was out there from her big furry body. Id get one myself if I was out there. A few years ago a underwater volcano, Hunga Tonga erupted and seawater blew into the stratosphere and caused it to flash into steam. The Meterorological group said the eruption could increase global warming over the next 5 years. So I blame a volcano in the south pacific for this hot, humid stormy summer and also the lack of snow this past winter. Not the first time a volcano messed up the weather, apparently. You guys take care. Sending good vibes and cooling prayers your way. ❤to Leo ✌️🫶

Temp part of the story - wonder what the heat index is. Just as our brains don't work well in extreme cold, they don't in work well in extreme heat either. Prior to needing rescue, hikers may not have been aware of some warning signs or even gotten lost.
