Hiking 23 Miles in One Day with my Camera

In this video I escape by hiking the Ullswater Way with my photography gear. The hike was 23.75 miles long and took in some amazing scenery. I stayed in my camper van the night before so I was ready to hit the trail at first light. Unfortunately I did not do any photography and the reasons for this are explained in the video. Enjoy.

I think the advice at the end is subjective. You would take no images, some would take a couple, and others (myself included) could take hundreds! That's the beauty of photography, everyone has their own philosophy and none of it is wrong. That's why I love watching your videos alongside other photographers, never boring.

But, your videos are very entertaining and your photographs being very artful deserve all the credit. Thanks!

I couldn't agree more, long hiking doesn't make for great photography, I had this experience hiking in New Zealand and the need to cover ground limits the the possibility to find good comps at the right time. Sure you see amazing things, but almost never at sunrise / sunset or at great lighting conditions. To avoid disappointments it's better to focus on either trying for great pics or enjoying the hike! :)

Thank you for taking the time to do this. I agree that a hiking goal rarely aligns to a great photo session, except for the lucky snaps along the way. That said, this was a most enjoyable videographer session, with some epic video “images” from both the camera and the drone. A great photo can tell a story, but never in the same way you did with this. I’m going to go pack some things for Saturday outdoors.

I really liked the video. I can no longer hike (knees are shot) but came to he same conclusion when I was hiking. But I always carried my gear because of the “what if”. You get extra points for pointing out that we are all stewards of the wilds and need to help out those others that haven’t caught on yet. Thanks for picking up the can.

That "grabby" is more like a "heavy". Convenience=weight. Check out some Cuben fiber/dyneema stuff sacks. As an older (more seasoned) backpacker I am a bit obsessed in getting pack weight down. You're a young buck and can carry a lot, but why not lighten your load if possible. We do appreciate your efforts for exceptional B-roll. Drones, sliders, audio, your creativity has no equal. Here in California we aren't allowed to hike or camp at the moment so watching others enjoy the outdoors is actually a breath of fresh air, so to speak. Thanks for taking us outside and be safe and well.

Great filming again Thomas. Really love your feed. Agree hiking and photography do not mix. I would also say holidays and photography, the same. I am seriously thinking of getting a Fujifilm X100V and putting it in my pocket and using only that. No pressure, no weight, just freedom to shoot.

I agree that the best photography is done on short hikes, car exploring, radial exploring from your AirBnB or camping site, stuff like that. You're just covering more ground that way. Plus long hikes are very rarely scenic all the way. I do like a long hike though, but definitely not when half of it is on the road. That's a feet killer.

Awesome opening Thomas! I feel your pain on not getting a photo. I went out a couple of days ago to a new (for me) park and never took my camera out of the bag. But, I got out of the house and had a nice hike. And, like you I ran ito a lot of mud. Oh well, better than sitting at home. Thanks to you and other photography youtubers the days are a little shorter. Stay healthy.

Hi Tom! Thanks again for the video! I've been watching you for one year already and, as usual, you inspire people including me, to stay connected with the nature and feel it better. Now, being forced to stay home here in Romania, i'm actually editing my photos taken during those "golden days" let's say on one monitor and on the other one i've got you wondering around in nature taking photos. I like your kind of videos, that style, hm...matches my way too. Hey, and i've downloaded those tracks you've being using in your videos, playing them in my car while going out shooting and while i edit my photos, always putting me in that zen mode in which i'm immersing while watching your videos. Thanks Tom, good job as usual :)

Tom, this video was wonderful!! Production elements were superb, but all that aside, it was so nice to see those wide open spaces and freedom of movement. In Canada we have been at home for may days now, with many more stretching out ahead of us. I am basically content at home, but this video made me realize how much more I will appreciate the freedom to roam at will when we have it again. Love, love, love your channel! Thank you!

I agree with the idea that it's difficult to do photography on longer hikes, especially ones that you're trying to complete in a single day. You focus in on cranking the miles out to get to your destination which prevents you from seeing what's around you. I will say i think you missed a comp at 19:15. I see great cloud filled sky, a great subject (tree in silhouette) and good light. But then again I had fresh eyes that hadn't just hiked 20+ miles. Thanks for the video Tom...great escape for the day!

Hurrah! Great video. It seemed like such a short one, I couldn't believe 23 minutes had passed by the end! Great story telling and cinematography of the entire journey, with a bonus gear review section about light weight photography equipment. And then the section at the end with your conclusions about long distance hiking and landscape photography: this was one of your greatest videos yet in my books. Which is hilarious, right? Because there was no "photo" taken... but we come to your channel for the journey, not the destination :-) And this journey had the feeling of a feature-length film, with the steady thread of the story, foreshadowing, plot tension which keeps you wondering what will happen next... Great story telling, great editing. Thanks for all you do T.H!

Thomas, your B-Roll has dramatically improved recently. I think I’ve watched every video for the past 2-3 year’s and it amazes me how your video production and planning is just going up all the time. I dont know how you focus on scouting and still stopping to get the same shot in 3 different angles. It’s flippen brilliant. 1 question...what is that thing you were wearing around your neck? Couldn’t tell if they were some form of earplugs or a mini ambient microphone etc?

Brilliant wisdom Tom. I have long since realised that taking your camera kit on trips like these "just in case" rarely returns keepers but to hear it from the likes of your good self is important. I keep an X-T2 and 16-55 f2.8 as a "just in case" kit but mostly don't take it out of the bag when out on hikes or motorcycle trips. Hopefully we can return to some kind of normality before long and you can get back to posting the type of video that we all started to follow you for. Meantime stay safe and do what you can.

Very enjoyable video Thomas, but I quite agree that you have to choose either or a specific goal to photograph at the ideal time of day. Sometimes as you say the two might come together, but obviously a long day hike often starts and begins close to the car when they weather like to be at the best and the summit might be achieved at midday. It will be still enjoyable to watch this video again has a memory of what freedom we enjoyed a few weeks ago! If you're looking for a video opportunity, what about a spoof campervan 'trip' in your garden as a bit of light relief for us all?

Thomas, I believe that the APSC Fuji lens is an 55 - 200 APSC lens. It provides the "field of view" of an 55 - 200 lens. It is not a full frame lens. If it was designed for a full frame camera then the crop factor of the APSC camera would apply and it would appear as a longer lens as the APSC sensor only sees part of the view the lens supplies.

As always, wonderful video. I wouldn’t beat yourself up having not gotten an image. You were thinking photography throughout the day and that’s a victory in itself. I do think a good exercise on these scouting trips in slightly harsher light could be black and white photography! I have been able to get some really great pictures in mid-day or less-than-ideal light with black and white. High contrast, sunlight and haze, windy branch leaf movements in trees can make for some compelling photos for sure. Thanks for all you do.

Thanks, Tom, what a nice hike you took! No matter there were no good photo ops, the hike and scouting locations were the focal point. I agree with you that you it's difficult to combine a hike with a photo shoot. I think it has to be one or the other. My wife has sometimes said, "Let's go for a walk and you can take some photos." It just doesn't work that way. Anyway, I hope you and Charlotte are okay, the new rules in the UK are a little difficult to follow, but I imagine you are now working from home, as so many are. Scary. I backpacked hundreds of miles on the Pacific Crest Trail last summer. I own small, lightweight Olympus gear but I didn't tale it. Instead, every video and still photograph was shot with my smartphone. And most everything was event-driven rather than strictly beauty driven. Seeing a rattlesnake, spotting a very rare species of spruce tree, a group of carnivorous plants, etc. documenting my experiences. The quality of the images wasn't top rate, but I'm still quite happy with them.

Finding a photo that will stand on it’s own merits whilst on a long trip is a bonus. I’m absolutely no expert but I believe that a trip requires a series of photos that individually probably don’t have sufficient merit to stand on their own but work a series to tell the story of the trip. But I guess that’s travel rather than landscape photography. And your vlog is already telling the story of the trip. Take care folks 👍.
