Hiking Scotland : Ayrshire Coastal Path - Day 5 (Maidens to Dunure via Culzean)

As part of a long term plan for hiking the length of Scotland with my dog Coops using long distance walking routes such as the West Highland Way and the Cape Wrath Trail, I decided to start my journey at home, section hiking the Ayrshire Coastal Path to gain experience, test out my gear and to work out any issues that may arise on longer routes.
The Ayrshire Coastal Path itself has been designated as one of Scotland’s Great Trails and forms part of the International Appalachian Trail and my journey begins by hiking from the quaint village of Maidens to the equally peaceful fishing village of Dunure 10km up the coast, enjoying stunning deciduous woodlands, rugged clifftops with outstanding views over the sea, expansive sandy beaches and historical landmarks such as Culzean Castle, Dunure Castle and a WW2 Outpost along the way.

What's your favourite walk and why? I'm sure that the Ayrshire Coastal Path will throw me a few surprises along the way as I'm always looking for new and exciting compositions to photograph in my local area 😁

😁 It’s a brilliant way to find new spots and to really appreciate the landscape, sometimes driving really doesn’t do a place justice and it’s about time I walk the coast I grew up on instead of dipping in and out 😅

Hey Scott!Enjoyed your video! Good stuff!My favorite walk is at my backyard in The New River gorge in southern West Virginia,USA. I accepted a challenge last year to do the 100 mile challenge in the gorge and accomplished it at the age of 64! I’ll be hitting the Appalachian Trail in about a week at Springer Mountain Georgia hoping to thru hike the AT! A Dream I’ve had for over 50 years! Later,Richard ☮️🥾

From a maidens local great to see Girvan not what it used to be But Maidens still looks great but omg the House prices for locals Dunure great the coast road is also a great drive great video

Hi Kris, thanks for watching! Have you seen the HOH videos? (Skye trail / CWT one especially) Absolutely mental what he had to do - all the kit from his rucksack in a drybag and hung out with the dog in the bag.. haha! Aye, there are quite a few gems down this way, the next section (Dunure to Ayr) should be great as well as it's mostly cliff walking. Looking forward to the Lendalfoot - Girvan route as well as my route will be up and over the coastal hills, magic!

Cracking video mate. Goat ye up oan the big box 📺👌 Impressive coastal walk like. Loved that wee swing. And that wee bird lookout over the Loch. Wonder if folk kip oot there? 🤔 Coops looked as tho he had fun. 🐶

Thanks for watching Kev :D Aye, that wee boathouse is a cracker, especially on a nice calm day with no midges! You probably could sleep in it, though it's pretty close to a big park for the kids. He had a belter, chasing things all the way to the end haha!

Haha, that’s it without the central column as well! I’ve got a wee ballhead, but prefer the big professional head for the images 😆 Ok on a walk like this, not so much when doing mountains.. I’ll be back out soon for another section, maybe even a wee camp 💪🏻 Thanks for watching & hope you’re well !

Cracking as always... we're toying with doing the Ayrshire coastal path as well albeit on bikes - spoilt for long distance trails in Ayr!! (relatively anyways!) 🤣

Thanks mate 😀I think that'd be smashing, would you supplement the cliff sections with the roads? You're right, it wasn't until I started actually looking that I realised what's on the doorstep, haha! I'll be picking away at the ACP then I'll go for the full River Ayr Way at some point, only thing that puts me off is the logistics. Think I'll start at Glenbuck and make my way back to Ayr, that way I just need a lift there 🙂

@@outlawedlandscapes haha we'd do it cliff tops and all but we're a bit like that... I fancy the River Ayr Way as well but I hear there are a lot of gates further inland which becomes a pain on the bikes.... The missis is threatening a reccy hike of it first though so we shall see!!

😬😅 Pedal assist or manual..? Haha! Would like to give something like that a try in the future, maybe when I save enough pennies 😶 That'd be a belter though, you must have thighs of steel 😂 From what I've seen theres a LOT of active farmland out by Muirkirk - plus all the access roads for the mines etc. Just have to take it in turns getting off the bikes!

Very nice video and lots of interest along the way. I look forward to seeing you on a long hike. Looking back I did the Isle of Man coastal path a long hike that for some reason I always forget that one. We were very lucky and had 10 days of excellent weather and I always remember sleeping at the foot of the point of Ayr Lighthouse. Great quality video. Cheers ✌👍 Oh yes My favourite long hike was the CWT. Not even sure why but seems to evoke a lot of passion.

Hi Dave! Thanks for watching & I'm glad you enjoyed it! I'll be using the Ayrshire Coastal Path to get everything down before tackling longer single expeditions. I'll be doing 2 days for the more southern sections as it makes more sense logistically, before doing the Mull of Galloway in a single outing to complete that area. I'm in no hurry, but it means I've always got something to work on when I'm unable to get to the hills or further afield. :) I think the CWT is the 'culmination point' for a lot of people, since it takes so much effort, planning and energy to complete it. It truly is beautiful though and I'd love to have a go in the future! Thanks again

Thanks, aye, that's what I've gathered from all the accounts I've read/watched. Ankle breakers galore 😂 I might head up to Inversnaid for a wee mooch about prior to doing the actual walk, see what the script is! I'm hoping to finish the route with an ascent of Ben Nevis via the CMD Arete, but we'll see what happens!

Good shout! I've been in there for cakes before whilst in the area and it was smashing, I love just how remote the place feels and the views to the Arrochar Alps from Rob Roy's viewpoint are incredible!!

Aye, it’s a right belter in decent conditions, we’ll see how I care with the others sections though, can’t all be blue bird days 🤭 Ticks are rife in Culzean and Dunure the now 🤮 Thankfully didn’t pick any up this time. Haha, aye, call it an ode to WWW or lack of choice in the YT audio library 😉

That total distance is good to know Scott as the Walk Highlands website has it down as a 6.25 mile hike (10.25km). Atb Glenn

Hi mate, aye, bear in mind that I didn’t follow the official route through Culzean as I wanted the views from the cliff walk + there was a lot of back and forth filming 👌🏻 All in it took me 8 hours which is crazy, but that was down to a) stopping to film / photograph / chat to folk and b) soaking up the views and hunting for compositions. Had I not been filming I could have done it in a lot less time, which is something I’ll have to work around when doing multi-day long distance walks. I’m in it for the views and experience though and not meeting targets 😊

I had a moment of madness and shaved to see what it'd be like. Instantly regretted it 😂😂😂 Haven't seen my chin(s) since I was a teenager!!! Growing it back as fast as possible, oils and vitamins, the lot!

Definitely, I'd seen an old photo where I thought I had a clean chin and that set me off. Turns out it was more of a chinstrap upon looking at it post shave 😬 Every day is a wee bit closer to its former glory and my self esteem coming back, haha!
