Nicely captured mood and photography. When I was 18 - exactly 50 years ago now - I spent two weeks in this valley on a geology field trip in the middle of winter. Welcome Flats Hut is of course quite different, but the old Douglas Rock is a classic survivor that was originally built in 1931. You got to stay in a very classic kiwi tramping hut that has seen generations stay in that remarkable spot. Well done. I've visited the lower and top end of this valley a couple of times since, but seeing the whole trip again is very nice. It's amazing what bits you recall perfectly, while others are completely blank!
Hi Philip. I enjoyed reading your personal recount and relationship to this trail and surrounds. I appreciate your comment. It was a special night for me staying at that hut. Even though I was the only person there that night, I could sense the history and 'hear' the stories shared over the decades at the table. I would have been okay with the Kea waiting until a little later in the morning to hop on the roof, though. Haha.
Thanks, I am walking in to Welcome Flat Hut next weekend. I hope the weather let's us. It will be my 1st overnighter and watching your video has helped me prepare.
Wonderful footage, sounds and perspective. We were vibing with this. Really shows how one perceives nature, when we get to see how they film and discover it!
