The Highline Trail is a ~100 mile trail that runs the length of the High Uinta Mountains in northern Utah. Little-known, and little-travelled, it is a great destination for hikers seeking altitude and true wilderness.

I used to say that about not having to filter fresh water like that too. Then I drank water literally gushing right out of the ground at about 10,500 feet in the Mt. Zirkel wilderness in Colorado. Not really that far from the Uintas. I got giardia. Now I filter everything. You would think that there's no way to get giardia straight from a spring at that altitude, but I did. I don't get it but there it is.

That's a helluva story, thanks for sharing. Built-up immunity is a huge factor. You can decrease the chances of having a problem by slowly increasing the dose, i.e. just have a few sips of untreated water early on.

Drinking untreated water is asking for the Rocky Mountain runs.

The Highline has been on my todo list for a long time !!! I want to do it from the Mirror Lake Highway to the East end. I think it's only like 80 miles, cutting off the section to the east of Mirror lake. This past weekend we did Naturalist basin. Such a cool amazing place that I would love to get back into sometime. I am finishing the vide of it right now & will have it up on Tuesday !!!

Hey! Those look like elk in your video. :) I can't be 100% sure because of how small they look in the video, but the gait and size looks about right.

Thanks! They seemed to be moving pretty fast, and I don't know much about elk, but I originally thought maybe they were moving too fast to be elk. I'll take your word for it! Thanks for your input!!

I just noticed your video on my "suggested" feed. Pretty cool to see a bit of the trail we bypassed when we did the Highline the week after. It was especially neat to see your view of Fox Lake and surrounding area from North Pole Pass. We came up from West Fork Whiterocks and then over Fox Queant Pass to join the Highline at Fox Lake where we then hiked it all the way back out to the west end. I've been posting videos from each day of our trip too.

Cool. The guy I hiked with the first few days did the loop over fox quant pass.

MORE! =D also how long did it take your feet to acclimate to those "shoes"
@KurtPapke
@KurtPapke 4 года назад
about 18 months. I've been running in Vibram Five Fingers for years, but it took me 1.5 years at the outset for my feet and calves to adjust.

What a great video. Thanks for sharing. I am hiking that trail in July of 2019 but I am having trouble finding a good map. Any suggestions.

Have you seen the map on the HAZ site: hikearizona.com/decoder.php?ZTN=757 It's at the bottom of the page.

Nice video, beautiful area. I didn't know moose lived in Utah, but that's just because I'm ignint =) Do you hike in those Xeros or just use them for water crossings/camp shoes?
@KurtPapke
@KurtPapke 8 лет назад
I did about half my hiking in the Xero sandals. They aren't for everyone, and I am still getting used to them.

Interesting. I have a pair of the Xero DIY's and love them. I day-hiked about 6 miles (inadvertently) in them, but hesitate to hike in them with a pack on. Of course at a load-out of 30ish lbs I'm sure my pack is much heavier than yours. Thanks!
@KurtPapke
@KurtPapke 8 лет назад
+John Pennell my pack was over 40 lbs. if you are interested in this topic there is another video on my channel on hiking in minimalist shoes.

I also would drink straight from the stream. You obviously are near the source. No beaver dams. No sheep grazing. So many people are paranoid about drinking without treatment. Thanks for being a voice of reason.

Thank you for the rational feedback!

I disagree. Animals also drink from the same water source. Also, contaminates are in the air and when air currents are easterly...well...Salt Lake City air is a mess. To each his or her own. I still filter because I have had all the common waterbourne illnesses we hear about ( I think) and it is just not worth the agony that ensues.
