From what I’ve read her parents moved to Spain after they retired and she was 26 years old. Before that, she only spent summer vacations there. I have a good friend who is from the UK but has lived in the US for a few years and considers himself an American, which is completely reasonable. But this chick was implying/suggesting that she was an immigrant to the US with the accent and the bad bio information. It would be like if my friend went back to the UK and put on a Southern US accent and told people he was from Alabama. That's freaking weird!

I was born in Mexico and raised in the US. Once when I was picking up my light skinned son from daycare, a Hispanic nanny asked me if I was my son’s nanny. I answered, “No, he’s my son”. To avoid embarrassment, the poor nanny replied “I was just wondering because I always see you picking him up from daycare”. I didn’t know what to say to her. It made me sad and wondered if other parents thought the same thing.

I’m from a simple family. We’re not adventurous in any way. One of the relatives had gone to Germany for 3 months when I was very young. That event became The Point in Time so we threw out Gregorian Calendar and replaced it “before he went” and “after he came back”. As a young kid it was fun to toy with but growing up I became increasingly embarrassed by family’s emphasize on our sole stint with Europe.

I spoke 2 dialects growing up in the Philippines. I've been living in Canada for for the last 37 years and rarely speak my native language/dialect. As a real Spaniard I find it hilarious that she pretended to be european to appear "diverse" and I think most Spanish people in Spain would too. The thing is, I'm not an immigrant, so I get why people who are in the USA and are discriminated against for it are outraged by her pretending to pass as one, and rightfully so.
My parents and I as well as part of my father's family immigrated to the USA in 1939 (before the war) because my family was wise enough to see that war in Europe was inevitable and that we wanted none of it. We did everything to become American, language, way of life, habits and outlook and it served us well. Why hold on to outmoded Spanish ways and customs as well as names with the mistaken belief that this would make us more entrancing and sought after when it would do the opposite?
