John Candy and Steve Martin were comedy legends during the 1980's. John Candy started his career with Second City Toronto, an improvisational comedy troupe in Canada. After performing on SCTV in the late 70's, he started his movie career. Movies like Summer Rental, Uncle Buck, The Great Outdoors, Delirious, and Spaceballs all showed his comedic genius. Steve Martin started out in stand up comedy and became the biggest name in stand up comedy. He made the transition to movies with, The Jerk, Pennies from Heaven, All of Me, The Three Amigos, Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid, and Father of the Bride. Both have done a few mediocre films, but their talents can't be denied. Steve Martin for example, plays a mean bango. Sadly, John Candy died in the 1990's, but will long be remembered as being a sweet man with a big heart as well as a being a very funny man. Steve Martin is still performing and starred with Martin Short (another SCTV alum) in a murder mystery comedy on Hulu streaming service.

In 2018, I was having "minor" surgery two weeks before Christmas, but I had a freakish amount of post operative internal bleeding, and between the blood loss and pre-existing heart disease, I had a heart attack. So I ended up in the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit watching all these happy, festive holiday specials and commercials on TV and thinking "Well, this doesn't quite match up to my current circumstances."

Good to hear you laugh. When I watched this for the first time I didn't put it together that Del's wife had died. I suspected something was wrong but didn't clue in until the reveal. My favourite part is the "those aren't pillows!" scene. It gets me every time.

Hey Marij, I know their pain all too well. I was going to see my daughter for thanksgiving about 10 years ago, on a trip from NYC to DC on the bus. A car hits the bus at the Delaware Memorial toll gate. When the state trooper runs everyone's info, he finds our bus driver has 3 outstanding warrants and must be arrested on site. The company couldn't send another driver for 6 hours. Needless to say, a 5-hour trip took 18 hours to complete, but I made it.

Steve Martin was on Saturday Night Live. Other good movies with him in them besides the Pink Panther movies are Roxanne, Father of the Bride parts 1 & 2, & Three Amigos.

If you don't live in N. America, it's often difficult to understand how big the U. S. is and how long it takes to travel here. Driving on today's interstate highways, just the part of their trip from Wichita to St. Louis to Chicago would take around 11 hours, not counting any time for stopping for food or fuel.

You have a kind heart, Mary, and your observation at the end about the holidays was right on point. We all know or have encountered many Del's around the holidays. The only question is, are we the Neal at the beginning of the movie, or the Neal at the end? We don't have a lot of time here. Why waste it being a jerk, when we can be a blessing?

If you are going to watch Pink Panther then watch the original with Peter Sellers. Better yet, watch Being There with Peter Sellers.

We group the whole season together (Christmas decorations go on sale just before Halloween... It's sad...) so don't sweat it. Still fits the mood and you can make up for the very MINOR error by catching Steve Martin's funniest "Christmas" movie, "Mixed Nuts" (1994.)

PLEASE DO NOT WATCH THE PINK PANTHER MOVIE WITH STEVE MARTIN. He did a terrible job. The original Pink Panther movies from the 1960s and 70s starred Peter Sellers and they are HILARIOUS. Steve Martin did a terrible job with the remake and it was not funny at all. Please avoid watching it. But do watch the originals with Peter Sellers, ABSOLUTELY HILARIOUS!

If you're doing Christmas movies that will pull at your heart strings, I recommend the original "The Bishop's Wife" with Carey Grant, David Niven and Loretta Young (sigh). I really dig the subtle better call saul theme music music when the trooper pulls them over. That conversation Between the trooper and Dell is probably my favorite part of the whole movie. I miss John Candy like crazy. Also...... When I 1st saw this the fact that his wife is gone and he is homeless completely caught me off guard. I wasn't old when I saw it and I cried like a baby.

If you want to react to a Pink Panther movie, it should be one of the original ones with Peter Sellers. He created the character, and there are several Pink Panther movies with him in the role of Inspector Clouseau. A Shot in the Dark is probably the best of them. The actor whom you thought you recognized from Ally McBeal was in just about everything but Ally McBeal. He's Kevin Bacon, and he's been in so many movies with so many different actors that people play the Kevin Bacon Game, where they try to figure out the shortest "movie distance" between any actor and him. For instance, Calista Flockhart (who played Ally McBeal) was in "Telling Lies in America," with Kevin Bacon so her distance from Kevin Bacon is one movie. Liam Neeson was in "Cold Pursuit" with Emmy Rossum, who was in "Mystic River" with Kevin Bacon, so Liam Neeson's distance from Kevin Bacon is two. That Pink Panther is a remake of the ones I grew up with. It's not bad but the originals were better.

Wonderful Thanksgiving movie! I was an unspottable extra in this movie. It was shot in and around Chicago, and when they asked for people to be extras in the film, I signed up. The group I was assigned to spent two days in a bus station (where the girls buy "earrings"). RIP John Candy

I watch this movie every thanksgiving, what’s amazing is that John Hughes kept having to cut certain parts out because the original draft of the script would have produced a four-hour movie. One deleted section was when they get pulled over for speeding in that burned out car the state trooper tells them that they overshot Chicago by 100 miles, and then another fight between Neal and Del erupts and the state trooper arrests them both. I wish Paramount would release that footage.

Please react to the ORIGINAL Pink Panther films with Peter Sellers, not Steve Martin's version. The original "The Pink Panther" is kind of slow/meh and the final "Revenge of the Pink Panther" is dumb, but films two through four in the series -- "A Shot in the Dark," "The Return of the Pink Panther," and "The Pink Panther Strikes Again" -- are comedy gold.

If you want Pink Panther, then you should watch the original franchise. If you want Steve Martin, then I would recommend The Jerk, Roxanne, or LA Story or, if you are looking for a series, "Only Murders in the Building."

I like your movie reactions, especually Fight Club. Watch the "Black Hawk Down" from 2001. The story about US Delta force and marines during their attempt to put down one of most powerful Somali`s warlords and save Somali from famine and civil war. But be aware - that is not a fairytale!

Did you watch the post-credits scene? Planes, Trains, and Automobiles was one of the very first films to have one, long before MCU and others started doing that.

Great movie, glad you liked it. Steve Martin is so funny, but I recommend you watch him in other movies rather than his role as Inspector Clouseau in the Pink Panther, not his best (Pete Sellers owns the Inspector Clouseau character anyway). I think Steve Martin is best in The Three Amigos, Father of the Bride, The Jerk, and Roxanne. My favorite movie funnyman of all time is John Candy! He did a lot of funny bit parts, like the Park Security Guard in Vacation or Gus Polinski the Polka King of the Midwest in Home Alone, but he’s supper funny in Uncle Buck, Only the Lonely, and Cool Runnings. Candy was a master comedian. And Hughes was involved with many actors over and over. From animal house, stripes, blues brothers , home alone, 3 Vacation movies, and others

Please don't watch that Pink Panther remake. It's absolutely terrible, with the hamburger scene being by far the best part. If you watch a Pink Panther, watch one of the old ones.
