Hilary Hahn on music, life, food (+ playing Sibelius Concerto with NZSO) 

"I have to convey something through almost every single note." This is what I notice about her playing: she insists every note contribute, zipping over none, using them all. What terrific, intentional playing!

We are witnessing one of the most unbelievably greatest violinists of modern times. Hilarys Mendelssohn violin concerto in e op 64 is seminal. Beyond perfection. I am in awe.

I have heard countless renditions of this concerto.From Niveu to Vengerov and Francescatti .Noone has brought tears to my eyes in the solo's opening exposition or maybe I donot remember.Oistrakh of course is powerful but Hahn (maybe it's the raw emotional power of being an American) made me tear .I put down my score and just listened purely entranced ! A truly usical communicative spirit .We all love this concerto like the Brahms and the Glazunov and countless others but the melody and the intense virtuoso passages make this concerto supreme. I must hear her in the Shostakovich . We are so lucky to have this wonderful spirit to bring meaning to the many fine pages of violin music !

Hilary Hahn is such a inspirational person. she does have the ability to change someone life. after whatching this interview I remembered I have not cooked a soup in long time, and here I am today, with a delicios vegetable soup on my counter top. thank you Hilary!

The interviewer thinks all it takes is practice to be as good as she is. The answer to that is no. There is more to being a great violinist than just practice. She has great talent and made many great choices in life and was brought up right.

honestly, I grew up on rock music, but this woman has now become my favorite musician ever! I could watch and listen to her everyday and never get bored.

One of the best interpreters of this concerto I have come across over 45 years of listening to this work.

She never plays a note out of tune and her violin is very unique sounding for a leading concert artist. Most of them won't even consider anything other than a Strad of Guarnerius. Her instrument is a Vaiulleme.

What an insightful video, it shows how natural, bright and intelligent this young lady is. Also, at the top of her profession.

I'm a huge fan of the Sibelius concerto, but I have never heard a violinist who can phrase one particular -and important- section properly...that is, what I personally consider playing it "right". It's that lyrical double-stop section at 1:35 in this video. I've never heard Hilary Hahn play the Sibelius until right now (which is embarrassing because I am a fan of hers). At 1:35, she just took my breath away. THAT'S IT! She plays it PERFECTLY. Better than anyone else I've ever heard, no question.

I love her, and she seems so down to earth.

It's simply amazing to me that women like this exist out side of movies, I'm sure even she has a skeleton or two in the closet. But she just comes off as extremely genuine and kind, shes an expert at what she does but seems humble despite being at the top, and on top of all of that, shes nice to look at. Passion, humility, and transparency. A killer combination for an excellent personality.

WHOOO dislikes this??? Seriously! I can understand having different musical tastes, and she IS musical by the way (I will defend that to the death), but no one I have ever seen can play as clean as her. NO ONE!! and that in itself deserves gobs of respect. Even the best violinists in the world play out of tune occassionaly, but not Hilary

This interviewer seems intent on having her confess she "missed out" on something important in her childhood. He just can't grasp she is talented and, from what I can tell, pretty well rounded. She accepts her life as normal (that is, normal but hard working for her). Only my opinion.

Not this performance, but this piece anyway. Look on her web site and you will find one with the Swedish Radio Symphony. I saw her perform this last week by the way. Fantastic. She is a personal friend and I never miss her concerts when she is in town. She must be from another planet to play like that. I've seen her play many times and I still can't believe it.

Incredible violinist.Swimming and yoga are good for violinists. Interesting point about concentration. I think once repertoitre has been memorised they kinda become warm ups so they're so in the fingers you can treat them cooly as warm up pieces and then enlarge them when playing with the orchestra.

At first I was under the assumption that she DOES practice 8 hours a day which sounded so extreme from the start, this is why I envied her. Now that she explained this I no longer envy her, I am inspired only further by her.

Shes like the female Heifetz except without the smoking habit, organic and vegetarian. Just compare this with the Heifetz Sibelius and it sounds almost identical, the vibrato, intensity etc. Ferras has the craziest of all vibratos but the beauty of expression not as good. Ivry Gitlis is also very intense and nice and also matches her.
