Hilary spoke to Andy Rawll and Mark Taylor for Record Collector Magazine about her career and the background to this latest single release. She also revealed her plans for the future and more new music, which should culminate in the release of a full album and UK tour dates.
Born in Denver and currently based in Dallas, following years of personal trials and professional errors, the potential of this talented singer-songwriter is finally being realised.
Establishing her own record label in 2018 to release the single 'There for you' was a phenomenal success, rising to become her first top-ten single on the Billboard Dance Club Songs chart. The following year, her recording of the Soul II Soul classic 'Back to Life (However Do You Want Me)' peaked at number one on that chart.

‘Fight to the Other Side’ was written when Hilary's pal Annie Blake was going through a particularly difficult time. It had been a couple of years since she had been diagnosed with FSH MD, an inherited form of Muscular Dystrophy that initially affects the skeletal muscles of the face and upper body, and her husband had taken early retirement to take care of her.
The disease had been quite aggressive and had left Annie feeling downhearted and dejected, and it was when Hilary heard this that she knew something had to be done… And so the stunningly sincere ‘Fight to the Other Side’ was born, an empowering song written to make it clear to Annie just how much support she has from those around her.
“I know you’re feeling like you’re nothing but a burden, but I’ve been there before its darkest when you’re hurting” sings Hilary as the song begins, and in a second sums up the heartfelt sentiments of the single. She acknowledges the pain, but makes it clear that, in time, it will pass. The emotional lyrics thank Annie for the help and support that she has given Hilary throughout their friendship, and reminds her that she will never have to travel this road alone and that she is loved no matter what
The track’s paired back piano introduction shows a tender side to this talented artist, whilst its percussion filled chorus demonstrates her vocal power and control. Roberts’ vocals rise and fall throughout ‘Fight to the Other Side’ making clear the extent of her vocal talents, and the tender lyrics show both the love for her friend as well as her affinity for writing thoughtful, beautiful lyrics.
After writing ‘Fight to the Other Side’ Roberts still felt as though she wanted to do more, and so she decided to enlist the services of her own charitable foundation the Red Songbird foundation, which helps adults heal from trauma that originated in childhood. The foundation held an awards evening and presented Annie with the Hero Award. In addition to this the CEO of FHS MD was invited and gifted a cheque of $50,000.
It was only at the event that Annie and her husband Kevin found out about what Hilary had been up to, and it’s safe to say that the single and foundation awards have invigorated Annie’s drive and perseverance, and she is now feeling ready to approach her diagnosis with vigour and strength.
