This was soooooo great! Your videos are always so entertaining! It’s so refreshing to watch a guy who is sooooooo damn talented still be so humble! You are one of the good guys! Keep it up Phil, you are what cycling needs! Jay
I never thought I'd watch a 34 minute RU-vid video all the way through, and certainly not at normal speed, but I just did both. Great work with the 4 camera split screen, and the commentary, and the fun tangents.
Great job Phil with putting on the event and your victory! Cycling is far better off with someone like yourself promoting it and all its disciplines! I really enjoy how you emphasize that its all about just having fun out there! Again thanks for all your motivating video's from 2017&2018 and looking forward to 2019 and some more great stuff!
@@kob0100 Can't really yell "Spoilers!" in the comments when the video is titled: Hillclimb World Championships - Full Men's Race with Commentary by *Winner Phil Gaimon*
wonderful video Phil! Your funny/humble commentary belies your continuing wins and KOM records. I'm 67, so my performance expectations aren't huge, but I love climbing, have whittled my bike down to 13.75 lbs, and am often the first to summit the hills on the group rides I attend. It's an awesome feeling to give some cyclist 20 years younger a run for their money!
@@Btstaz That was great to see Ned there! How many time has he won the Iron Horse Bike classic Durango to Silverton RR? Having lived in CO for 21 yrs. I had the pleasure to race and watch him demolish many fields in both RR. and Mnt. Biking! Twice the age of many of those competitors!
Great video. I've been in SoCal now for over 2 1/2 years and finally got around to doing Gibraltar the end of December, a couple days before the start of 4 Days to Fitness, and it was pretty chilly at the top (and windy AF heading over to Painted Cave). Probably my favorite climb now in California, except the last 1.3 miles where it gets steep. That part sucks and I totally blew up.
Great video Phil. Amazing wattage man. Very funny too “ I am now f’d”. Fantastic idea to have animals for the podium presentation . You are a good man!
Love the format, seeing the power is really cool. Hope to make it again this year. I also now know just how awkward I look in my skinsuit and I'm not okay with it.
Phil, your content has become more and more watchable from beginning to end. Seriously, I used to skip big chunks but I don't do that anymore. You're structuring things as a narrative and limiting dead spaces. I don't think it was that easy or natural for you to learn and implement these things but the same willpower you brought to becoming a pro rider and stealing everyone's' KOMs obviously came to bear on how you make and edit your videos.
It's definitely Phil's event. When was the last time he wore a race number ending in 1? You know, reserved for the team leader? I have a feeling Phil was used to a lot of domestique-level 8's and 9's.
I don't know, Phil, you won putting out 150-200 watts less than second place... You claimed you didn't calibrate your power meter, but maybe next time you need to make sure your electric motor registers on your power sensor! I mean, that's what I heard somewhere. :) Loved the video. Thanks.

Best part of this is the shout out to the Humane Societies, and the heckling, of course! Jesse should be under investigation by the UCI and WADA for texting and riding - that's both shameful and disrespectful to the world of cycling. I say 4 years mandatory - and perhaps in solitary!!
fair effort but would have been better if it wasn't on same weekend as UK national hill climb championships and taiwan kom challenge. Maybes next time do it week after
Nice video, Phil, but isn't stage 2 of the Escalada Ciclista a Montjuic the unofficial World Hill Climb Championships since its inception in 1965. No climbing names in that winners list ;-) The first stage criterium/procession/warm-up to show off the riders hardly counts with its 5 x 5km laps. The only difference is that yours is a head-to-head race whereas Montjuic is the traditional individual time trial hill climb. Going to be hard to pull some non-US names over for your World Championships seeing as both these events are in October. Thanks for the great retirement videos and all the best with your hillclimb national series - I expect those to be awesome events. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Escalada_a_Montju%C3%AFc
Stage 2 of the Escalada Ciclista a Montjuic has been the unofficial hill climb world champs for a long time. It's a tt as well, so just purely the rider versus the hill. Look at that winner's list of riders that can seriously climb (ignoring the 1990's EPO-era riders on the list).
If its fastest to time trail these climbs, then why don't you time trial it even if its a race? If the draft is that important, then why are you on the front?
@@worstretirementever Thanks for the reply! So in essence what you are saying is you think your advantage is greatest on the steep parts so want to hopefully slow the race down on the flats? Just struggling to understand why people do this, cuz I see the same thing in running, where elites talk about how races are slower because they arent pacing the same.
No just when it’s shallow enough to draft I’m not giving him any help or hurting myself but I keep him closer to the limit so I can attack on the steep part
