0:47 "when you're at a standstill with your foot on the brake, pull the clutch up" ahhh m8, by pulling the clutch up with no gas it will disengage and you will stall like a complete fuck knuckle. Good advice/10 -_-
@milanmastracci
@milanmastracci 8 лет назад
+TheGanjaWizard I don't have three feet... If you're at a standstill, with right your foot on the brake. Take your right foot off the brake. Slowly disengage the clutch with your left foot, and then start to give it some gas with your right foot.
@theganjawizard1090
@theganjawizard1090 8 лет назад
+milanmastracci I've been doing this for years, but the point I was making was the fact that you said the wrong thing at 0:47 and were obviously meaning to pull the handbrake up, not the clutch.

+TheGanjaWizard You don't need to use the handbrake on a hill start if you're not a noob.

you dont need handbrake to move, You only need to balance clutch and gas and use your feeling.
@milanmastracci
@milanmastracci 6 лет назад
When you get used to it, yes. However the more you balance the clutch and gas, the more wear you will be putting on the clutch plate

-Hold brake, you are standing by. -Full clutch and engage first gear -Start letting off the clutch SLOWLY (reach the biting point, different angles on different cars) -Sense how the car trembles a little bit trying to go forward: this tells you the car WONT go backwards if you release the brake) -Release brake. With the right foot now free, instanly give it gas (calmly) -Continue releasing the clutch, never let it go 100% instantly. When you start giving it gas, you should also let go the clutch little by little How much gas to give? You need to figure it out. Heavy cars or cars with several passengers inside requiere more gas. So do steeper inclines
@shoponline831
@shoponline831 8 лет назад
I usually just hold the clutch at the biting point and then move from brake to gas quickly. However, for hills from hell like San Francisco I still use my handbrake. I started driving a stick 4 months ago
@RYZINAP

Handbrake is better, especially for cars with very light clutches.
@shoponline831

+PXLynx like I said I only use it for really steep Hills like if someone is right on my bumper

I never use the Handbrake Method because my Handbrake is broken. I'll hold the car with the clutch if someone is on my ass (very rare) release my foot off the brake and give it gas, whole process takes me less than a second, not enough to produce noticeable wear on the clutch. That being said, I use this method only if somebody is riding me to the point where rollback is an issue, usually once every month or two

I really like how on another video, you tell to double clutch so you dont ware your syncros (you know, the thing that is there so you dont need to doudle clutch) and in the end of the video, you accelerate and redline the car. So the tranmission is important but not the engine?
@capua89

I use the e-brake only on very steep hills.

How to temporary stop a manual car on hill and then move on without using the handbrake?
@tonim89
@tonim89 5 лет назад
Here in Brazil, if you can't start moving your car from a hill, you don't even get a license. I dare to say that 90% of our cars have manual transmission, including the ones from the driving schools. My driving teacher used to ask me all the time - Stop the car and keep it steady in that hill without using the brakes - after 5 seconds with the car completely stopped, he would tell me to start moving without letting the car go backwards.

Wouldn't one just do the same, but using only the footbrake? ie. Letting go of the clutch until it bites and "holds" you from reversing. then move over from brake to gas.? Will it hurt the brakes/clutch? (I've been doing this since Drivers'Ed and never gotten my car to stall nor roll back. We do however not have very steep roads) Although I imaging the parkingbrake-method is better for steeper hills.
@KrzysztofC-1
@KrzysztofC-1 9 лет назад
+TrocaderoKillen I don't think you can bite and hold much when engine is idling at 800RPM. But no need, when you get fast enough, going from break to gas very quickly while releasing clutch allows to start moving quickly and with minimal roll-back. But parking break method is the official and recommended one because there is zero roll back and risk of hitting the one behind you.. We need to demonstrate parking break uphill start method on our driving test.
@Natsukiyaa
@Natsukiyaa 9 лет назад
+Krzysztof Cygan yeah I was shown both but have only had the need for the foot brake one so far.
@milanmastracci
@milanmastracci 9 лет назад
+TrocaderoKillen If you don't have a hand brake, you only have the foot one, I will go from the brake pedal to the gas pedal quickly. That way the car will not roll back more than an inch or two. If the other guy behind you is that close, he'll be at fault for the damage if there is any.

+RIPxBlackHawk I recommend you google before embarrassing yourself or trying to make fun of someone. Here is a shocker for you: my car idle rpm is really 800rpm. Apparently, you have no idea what you're talking about. Read up: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Idle_speed

+milanmastracci This is not an advanced but a standard technique. I was expecting a heel-toe technique which can be suitable for stop-go situation. The right foot position is the same as used for heel-toe downshifting which you display on your video of that advanced downshifting technique.

@juanarrisem

Using the e-brake is unnecesary. In fact, is stupid, cause you are slowly breaking it, making it lose its tension. When you are going up a hill, you stop, and want to start rolling you just need the normal movement of the motor. With no gear (neutral), and no gas, your motor is still rotating, at abot 800 rpm. (depending on the car). At that rpms there is ENOUGH torque to hold the car in ANY hill. Just holding the clutch at the "friction" point, there is no brake or ebrake needed at ALL.
@milanmastracci
@milanmastracci 8 лет назад
+Juan bandicootarri At that point you will be just be using the clutch to keep the car forward; burning out the clutch. Also, the emergency brake is very helpful because if someone is right on your ass, if you are on a hill, without the ebrake, your car will roll back and possible hit them depending on how close they are to you.
@ImAzraa
@ImAzraa 8 лет назад
+milanmastracci Well, in a sense that is what you do everytime you start off the line. Any line. You pair 1000rpms from your engine with 0rpms from your engaged transmission. And that's what the clutch is designed for: friction for transmitting torque. Besides, if you get quick enough at hill starts, using the method the dude suggested does not really do much more damage than a normal start does. *HOWEVER* if you wanna just hover for a long time using the clutch as a brake, well thats different: thats idiotic. Like creeping up on a red light waiting for green. Abusing the clutch (low rpms, but still) I usually just watch other people creep up and fail at a quickstart, and then I start and leave them behind, even with the advantage they took. Hehehe, silly drivers
@richardgravysippinv6948
@richardgravysippinv6948 7 лет назад
I too use the clutch to hold the vehicle, only for as long as it takes for me to move my foot off the brake and give it gas (usually half a second at most). Not enough time to cause any significant damage to your clutch

Why is this advanced driving.... Clutch control is a FUNDAMENTAL part of driving a damn car.....
@milanmastracci
@milanmastracci 9 лет назад
+Tsetse Fly And when people are starting off driving manual, they will be able to get leveled driving no problem, however when they get to a hill, they will stall the car and panic.
@tsetsefly4538
@tsetsefly4538 9 лет назад
+milanmastracci OK, it's good your showing learner drivers the basics, but I'm afraid this not a advanced driving skill it is a essential part of driving, here in the UK it is part of your basic test in a manual car and part of your basic test to pull away on a hill and learning clutch control during your lessons.
@Thefirstshimita
@Thefirstshimita 9 лет назад
+Tsetse Fly To be fair, you have to admit that manual transmissions are on their way out of the automotive world. It's slowly (and I highly stress slowly) becoming a niche feature of a car, because fewer and fewer people are caring about sticks. More and more kids are being taught to drive with an automatic, therefore a lot of them don't learn to use a stick.
@tsetsefly4538

+Deagle Beagle, Fair point and we'll said. Sad because the whole point of driving is to feel the car, and yes I understand some people just want to get in and go. I think people that feel that way should stay off the road and use public transport.... Now there is a debate....
@mamba101
@mamba101 8 лет назад
+Deagle Beagle that may be true for the U.S. but all of Europe use manual and that ain't changing
