The story in Bill Carter's book about this segment is cute. Conan goes to one of his staffers at the end of the shoot and asks him to get the advertising people's phone numbers so he can call them and thank them after the segment airs. Staffer just rolls his eyes and says, "The blonde, right?"

Who among us has not met our spouse because the Houston NBC affiliate refused to air our TV show until 2:40 in the morning and we saw this guy’s wacky commercials airing during our show and we decided to make a top-quality commercial for him and filmed the whole thing and one of the copywriters took a shine to us?

The line about Leno's word being a pact made me laugh out loud so hard.

You could definitely feel the fact that there was something special going on in here. Conan in every remote without a doubt plays the part of trying to seduce beautiful women and failing miserably at it which he certainly didn't do here (I am certain of this because Lisa was so gorgeous in here and Conan just didn't try to make a stupid pass at her). He was rather suspiciously quiet where you can sense that he wanted to make a very good first impression. He was professional and kept his jokes civil. If this ain't the after effects of LOVE I don't know what else is.........LOVE COCO

7:44 the micro-expressions Conan's giving out when the cameraman pans to him and he's almost nodding "no", before the cutaway. It's like the crew is already aware of his crush on Lisa.

Conan said that there is a footage of him falling for that woman, but look at Liza, she is sooo into him! I'd say, it's also a footage of her completely fallen in love with Conan.

This is the first time i've seen conan bomb on a joke. at 6.43 he knows this isn't going anywhere. I guess liza is to blame:)

This clip is the weirdest example of foreshadowing I've ever seen. Not only is Conan's future wife in this bit but he also has that ironic line about Jay Leno in the beginning and around 5:40 he starts talking about cynicism being bad. Freaky!

Conan is so real. I hope his fans, both loyal and lapsed, and new fans follow him wherever his future endeavors take him.

I'm disappointed in the distict lack of grey suits, pomaded hair, alcoholism, chain smoking, and sexism in this advertising firm.

It feels surreal to see them like that and to think... now they're married. Why can't a cute, famous guy show up at my job and then subsequently marry me? That'd be awesome.

Yeah, that Leno comment is now very ironic. But fuck Jay Leno.....the thing I have always loved about this video is because it's where Conan meets his wife (she's in the video). Very sweet. Plus, that chain-saw guy is over the top. I love his accent. He's the kind of weird, real person Conan connects with.

Is it just me, or did anyone else prefer the original?? Honestly, when the ad firm played the new commercial, I actually thought they were kidding, and that it wasn't the real one they made. The music is so strange, and the entire thing feels like a parody. Hilton's store has absolutely nothing to do with that athleticism vibe, since the selling point of his furniture isn't really hard work, dedication or commitment to customers, it's that he has low prices. I think it would make more sense to compare him to lawyers or police officers, and brand him as someone who fights for the customer's right to find quality goods at fair prices, and not be overcharged or cheated. They could have done a whole ad posed as one of those classic law firm commercials, where Hilton would be saying things like, "Have you ever been overcharged for furniture or home goods?? If you have, don't hesitate to call now. At Hilton's furniture, we fight for your right for quality goods at fair prices," or something like that. Or they could have switched it up, and made an ad where police officers storm the store as Hilton is making a sale, arresting him for having "criminally" low prices. The slogan could be, "prices so low, it's criminal." Or maybe for something a little more fun, they could have showed customers in the store gasping and covering their kid's eyes, saying things like, "oh my god, he's taking it *all* off!!" Then the camera would pan over to Hilton posting lower and lower prices on his furniture, while onlookers act as though he's actually taking his clothes off haha. The slogan could be, "scandalously low prices." Basically, any ad that didn't seriously compare Hilton's furniture store to dedicated, accomplished athletes would have been better. 😂 It just felt so forced and ridiculous. Hilton's original ad was way more fun, sincere and memorable, and I think the advertisers should have continued in that direction while just improving the execution. I am starting to wonder if maybe Conan purposefully came up with a ridiculous commercial idea to be funny, but made it seem like it was the firm's idea. If that were the case, though, then why did conan take it so seriously after seeing it? I also don't remember anyone in the audience laughing, and the firm members certainly didn't seem to think the ad was a joke, which makes me skeptical that it was supposed to be a parody... Idk why I have so many thoughts about what was probably a fake ad; I guess I just got carried away while coming up with alternative commercial ideas 😂

In retrospect, the summer of 2000 was a best of times/worst of times for Conan. In the bad was Andy Ritcher leaving, and even years later on Howard Stern, Conan made clear how hard it was for him to lose Andy. On the best was Conan meeting the woman who would be his wife.
