Himiway Range Test - Throttle Only

In this video I ride both the Himiway Cruiser and the Himiway Escape under throttle power only to see how far they can go on a single charge. The range numbers were surprising. As a bonus, I also tested my Rad Mini Step Thru for comparison.

Excellent video and very educational! My wife and I just went to Coronado, CA and averaged about 20mph on setting 4 peddling on damp sand for approx 10 miles. We both have Himiway Cruisers, but hers is a step thru. It was windy and a lot of resistance with the damp sand, but great fun! The battery was certainly assisting quite a bit and dropped a couple bars! Actually, it's hard for me not to pedal, and I know the battery will last longer by assisting it.

Great video and I think I am going to do this test on my bike. I have a town about 12 miles from my house with some good up and downhills. I am a big guy at 285lbs and the bike is the Bikonit MD1000. I think it will help significantly to have a much better idea of what the bike can do range wise. It will also give me a feel of what it feels like at near drained and know I better head back to home or camp. Great video!!

Excellent video!!! The Escape reminds me of my Camp Scrambler, eats up the battery so fast! Of course 13/14ah equals much less range than 17/19ah batteries. When I finally cook my battery, I will replace it with a 19ah!!!! My Rad Runner gets crazy good range, even though it's 14ah, it must have to do with the wimpy 'peak 750' watt motor! Keep up the good work!!!
@Altema22
@Altema22 3 года назад
It's the controller that puts the limit at 750 watts, and Rad does this for legal reasons and battery range. I'm an engineer and I've tested the Rad motor at 1,600 watts continuous. The stock motor took the power so well that I left the test controller on a RadMini 4, and it's a hoot going 0 to 20 mph in 4.9 seconds.

Now that is a proper range test, thank you. I think you are right about the heavier bike and the chunkier tyres, they do make a huge difference. If you want to take a longer trip like say 40 miles than the trick is to pedal hard for as long as you can and only rely on the battery to get you home.

I find your reviews and explanations of the details of the bikes you report on to be very helpful. thanks. One of the things that I am interested in knowing about fat tire cruisers (like the Himiway step through) is how easy it is to pedal without using the motor. I have been running errands and cruising up and down the coast from Santa Monica to Redondo beach for a couple of years on my big heavy classic 3 speed beach cruiser that weighs about 50 lbs. I weigh about 200 lbs and sometimes, on my way home from the grocery store, can have close to 80 lbs of cargo in saddle bag bastets and the front basket. There are a couple of hills I cant deal with using my 3 speed hub and I would like to get an ebike to help with those situations. I'm also interested in extending my cruising ground a bit. and want to be sure I can pedal the bike home if I push the battery range too far. I would like to be able to use my ebike without power assist for a lot of the nice flat beach bike paths near where I live and actually am not allowed to use a throttled ebike in some parts of paths. Fortunately those are flat parts. A fat tire bike is attractive because the 2.25 inch tires on my current bike sometimes have problems with the sand drifts on the bike paths early in the morning before the maintenance workers get things cleaned up. So I would really appreciate hearing from folks about their experience pedaling their himiway bikes without power assist. Is 10-12 miles reasonable to do, without power, on a fat tire bike like the himiway? I currently have a couple of 25mile roundtrips I do on my beach cruiser.

Since I am just ow seeing this, I thought of the biggest battery eater, the wheel size/distance factor. The smaller the tires, the more they need to turn, to go the same distance as the larger tires. That's why 12" tires wear out faster than 21" tires. add to that the extra weight and you've a perfect recipe for tire eating.

Nice range on the Cruiser, disappointing range on the Escape, especially since the Mini with the same battery went way further. The Rad may be less "exciting" in the power delivery, but they do it on purpose, and it beats struggling home like you would with the dead Escape. I wouldn't worry about the motor at those speeds. The stator windings heat up the most, and at high speed there's enough air tumbling around to pass the heat to the case. Lugging up a long grade at low speed is not healthy though 😉
@Altema22
@Altema22 3 года назад

That's a heck of a range on your rad mini, seems unnecessary, how long do you typically ride at a time? I wish Himiway would have put the 17.5 amp hour battery in the escape as well. Maybe they will start selling a larger one aftermarket. Thanks for the comment! 😁

@@CitizenCycle925 - My shorter rides are are around 14 miles, longer ones are up to 34 miles. The range is overkill for short trips, but I plan on exploring this next summer. There are other benefits to the setup though, like not having to charge for days, less stress on the battery (drains less), and more torque. The extra torque comes from less voltage sag under full throttle, thanks to dual power feeds and 12 gauge wire instead of the original 16. With both batteries full, the throttle sends 1,649 watts to the motor.

@@CitizenCycle925 Yes , I am sure that is true , except for Distance / mileage . Why "ALL" Ebike reviewers don't have a path , trail , route they use to check "every" Ebike on they test , is borderline ignorance to me . And I mean , what we ALL want to see , without peddling !!!! As soon as I see a " mileage / distance "review where a tester says he is going to peddle , the test and video is done for me . Find a trial , use FULL throttle until it dies . That is the ONLY way to get a good mileage test , using , as much as possible , the same variables . THEN we will know , or have the best idea of COMPARISON'S and Mileage . IMO , this should be done for even the hard radical " off road" Mountain bike . That way we STILL get a good comparison of MILEAGE . Taking them off road and PEDDLING proves NOTHING !!!! ... Hmmmm ..... Very good test but I wonder what the difference would be in July-Aug when it is 100 degrees farenheit in the shade. My rule of broken thumb is 1 to 1.25 miles per amp hour but being conservative and wanting to extend the battery life, I tend call it 1 mile per amp hour.

good evening, I have a himiway zebra, and the trottle can only support up to 6 kmh, can you tell me how to change the settings so that the bike can also drive maximum speed with only throttle, thank you Jan Willem

I think it’s fair to say if you were on PAS and off the 100% throttle the Escape would go much further just like any other bike. Probably 30-50 percent further. Your thoughts? 💭
@timhardman4764
@timhardman4764 3 года назад
Yes it would go further but estimating percentage or distance etc...brings us all right back to the speculation game which this video is trying to avoid. This vid does a good job eliminating the changing variables contributing to range of each bike. This is a baseline test and a good one short of doing it in laboratory conditions. 5 Stars to CitizenCycle for unbiased, truthful facts as a baseline that everyone can then form their opinions from. This is something that has been lacking from most e-bike reviews over the past 4 years as well as our government.

I would like to ask what mirrors you have on your bikes and where to get them, thanks for a great video, it is helping me decide if I want to order the Hemingway?!?

In Germany we must pedal :P otherwise the motor won't kick in. I'll check out if there is a workaround. :)

Thanks !! Curious about the weather? Does cold weather generally kill the battery quicker? Almost 30 miles is impressive 👏
@Altema22
@Altema22 3 года назад
Cold weather does decrease battery range, especially with the battery exposed like that. It gets worse when it's below freezing. I have a battery jacket on mine, and it helps.

That's good range on the cruiser. My Rover with the 35 amp controller, upgraded 750w motor, and the stock battery gives me about 22-23 miles on throttle only (which is how I normally ride). You made me think about how I describe the upgrades to people. I tell them a stock bike will do 24 mph and at about 12 miles starts dropping the speed two or three mph's then another couple miles per hour around 18 miles and 21 mph... Upgraded I get very close to the same range but the mph starts at 33 mph then drops to 28 mph as the battery drains. So right up until the battery dies completely the top speed with upgrades is 3 mph higher than a stock bike with a fresh battery. The biggest range killer is the 35 amp controller is set up to shut the motor off at 40 amps to save the motor.

I weigh 200 lbs.and get about 25 miles on my Himiway Cruiser with moderate to sometimes full peddle assist, but I never do just throttle only (I actually try to go mid-peddle assist towards the end to conserve battery). These were warmer days as well (50 to 60F). There are hills as I trail ride mostly. I thought I would get more out of the battery though. If I used throttle only and did no peddling I would probably get less than 20. When I got my Himiway bike the voltage in the controller was set to 36V instead of 48v and it caused me to run the battery dead on my first 2 rides (until Himiway instructed me to change the setting to 48v) . I'm wondering if this effected the cells in the Samsung and caused issues with my range? Or do you think this is pretty normal?
@bakageta4294
@bakageta4294 3 года назад
That doesn't sound normal to me, unless I'm not understanding how steep the hills are. I'm around 280 and ride in similar weather, about half pavement and half sand/dirt trails with an average amount of long slow hills on both. I'm 70/30 on PAS vs throttle and easily get better range, two 15 mile rides over two days leaves 2/4 lights on the battery which is where I recharge now. I nearly made the same mistake with 36v, I went around 48 miles spread over 4 days on my first charge, and the display only showed 1 bar missing but I noticed it was extremely weak and came home immediately. While it was charging I saw a video mentioning the 36v problem and flipped mine to 48v. I'm on PAS 4-5 most of the time, depending on if it's a hill. On flat ground even with a larger 50t chain ring I can't comfortably keep up peddling with PAS 5, it just ends up turning the pedals for nothing and that throws me off. My average speed shows around 17mph usually, and I rarely go over 22mph, so that might make a difference?

I suppose if you did this in the summer heat, the motor temp would be a lot warmer than it is at 40 degrees.

I'd like to see a test on how far you can go (Hypermiling) I have not seen anyone do that yet. I have gone a 110 on single charge with 4 rides. I know someone has exceeded that because I still had 2 bars left. I only recharged it because I was going on a planned 60 mile rail/trail ride the next day and knew I couldn't make it on what I had left. Mostly PAS 2 on the Himiway - tried not to use the throttle. Anybody???

Did you modify the Cruiser to go past 20mph? if not, can you make it so it only goes 20? I dont know much about this but it feels like if you can max out slower you could conserve battery for more range. Im looking at getting a Cruiser in the next few months, Im a heavy guy and one of the places I want to be able to ride to is about 10 miles each way in rolling hill territory, Id be happy maxing out at 15-20mph for the entirety of the trip.
