I have read and watched many reviews on the Rekluse and Hinson and not one of the magazines or other testing guys has ever shown the wear and tear with the rubber gromets or explained the slippage that way. Very cool good job Jeff.

@@roostin I don't think that's the only reason, and not totally valid because if the testers have a major following it's free advertising for the brands even if the 'tester' doesn't 100% love the product because the 'tester' will always want to seem happy and positive to an extent or people literally turn off (watch the missenden flyer - both he and Zack of Revzilla find lots of positives and then add the negatives as a side note, on bikes they like even saying no bike is perfect so I must find some negatives. In fact TMF happily says he doesn't care if manufacturers don't give him bikes to test because there are always some that will!). The bigger reason most testers won't go into detail like this is because they don't know! Some are clearly not mechanically minded at all, they won't think to look at the rubber dampers in the clutch housing, might not even know they are there as they just test bikes and hand them back and have their own serviced at a main dealer, probably for free.
@JeffWalker84

Hey guys! I mis-spoke in this video when I said the Rekluse basket was one piece. The Rekluse basket is just like the Hinson and comes with the rubber dampeners which are replaceable, so that's a solid upgrade and I highly recommend it if you go that route! Also, I would like to point out that Rekluse offers 3 different clutch springs: silver (softest), gold (middle), and red (stiffest). I was using 3 red and 3 silver springs. Using 6 silver or a combination of silver and gold will result in a less aggressive clutch and can improve life-expectancy in the TorqDrive system. Thanks for reading!
@chipsnpeasifuplz
@chipsnpeasifuplz 4 года назад
so in a nut shell a rekluse system is more catered for pro's like you where you're more likely to replace a clutch after a race meeting or every other. i've known of pro's killing clutches per day or even getting new plate between races in world champs.

@@A1soldiersaint your biggest problem with an oe basket is they wont be as resistant to notching. You dont have to buy the meantioned clutches to have a good 1 there's plenty of great brand like mitaka.

Really good video, and definitely some good info. A couple things to note though for whatever it's worth: 1) The amount of pad area on each fiber doesn't directly affect the grip of that fiber. It merely changes the pad pressure, which can affect the life of the fiber material. In general, lower pad pressure = greater pad life. 2) The Rekluse has an option included in the TorqDrive kits to greatly reduce the clamping force, which would allow you to reduce the torque capacity down to the level of a Hinson or Stock if there is concerns about durability of the transmission, but with a much lighter lever pull than a stock clutch or Hinson. 3) The Rekluse basket is not a one piece gear on the back, it is similar to the Hinson in that it has dampers, and the basket is assembled with allen head bolts allowing the dampers to be serviceable. 4) There is some benefit to having the steel core thin fiber plates of the TorqDrive because they don't expand as much as the aluminum core fiber plates of the stock or Hinson. 5) Starts aren't typically what kills transmissions and basket dampers, whoops and landing hard on the gas is what does it. But it is true that a clutch with more torque capacity will be harder on the basket dampers and transmissions in those situations.

These are both the "Auto" systems which I like. I would say I'm pretty easy on a clutch as I had over 50hrs on the stock 2013 clutch. Congratulations on the new team and best of luck this motocross season.

Great break down on clutch operation, but sorry, I'm a stickler for misinformation, not entirely correct on basket, hub relation. Outer basket is only "connected" to the crank(kick starter if equipped, and water pump). Inner hub drives the primary shaft spinning the first set of gears. The second set of gears meshed with the first are connected to the counter shaft/sprocket and drive the rear wheel. I know I'm being a nit-picker, but let's inform accurately. Great channel and hope to see you at MX Express this spring/summer!

Hey Jeff I already knew how a clutch worked came here for the Rekluse info but wanted to state you explained the standard clutch excellent fast and to the point
@lgj1962
@lgj1962 4 года назад
The design intent of the increased friction surface in the Rekluse system is to afford lighter spring pressure (aka lighter lever pull force) for an equal amount of torque transfer through the clutch...so Rekluse uses lighter springs, not heavier. The deterioration of the basket dampers you showed was from thermal abuse, not physical abuse by dumping the clutch ...from my experience (P.Eng in failure analysis). Not saying you were abusively over heating your clutch through the lever, but most likely putting higher loads on the clutch because of its inherrent ability to handle the tongue in higher gears...which generates lots of slip and friction heat....these clutches can be ridden in higher gears because of their design, but doesn’t mean they should be. Yeah, I am a little bias toward Rekluse but hope this insight can clear up some of the confusing details given in the video...I agree with all other commenters that this video is a good start in putting clutch engineering in layman’s terms.
@mareksumguy1887

Larry J yeah that’s what I was thinking; it looks like the elastomeric material was overheated and thus hardened/embrittled.... shattering like hard plastic.
@Eldon95084
@Eldon95084 4 года назад
This is not an auto clutch which allows riding in the wrong gear. This is a standard manual clutch with better lockup allowing cooler runing temps based on lest friction. The rubbers look hammered not fried.
@lgj1962
@lgj1962 4 года назад
Eldon95084 You are correct, the auto-clutches due seem to encourage riding in the wrong gear with resulting more slip (and heat). However, any clutch slips and produces more heat when ridden a gear too high or lower revs...it’s just the nature of all clutches. Also, I agree it’s impossible to tell from a photograph about the failure mode of the cushions (not dampers or dampeners....they are just shock load cushions). Could be hammered or heat...or both. I’ve had experience with pro riders here in Canada where the failure mode was almost 100% heat related and looked fairly similar to the pic here. So it’s just an educated guess 😀
@lgj1962
@lgj1962 4 года назад
Cooler running temperatures are the result of the increased friction surfaces in the Rekluse design...I.e. more friction reduces slip and heat. Other systems have less friction and thus more heat.
