Surgeons started doing periacetabular osteotomy (PAO) to "fix" hip dysplasia. PAO was first widely publicized in 1987 as a way to cure and prevent hip pain. However its track record for fixing and preventing hip pain isn't good. In a study that followed patients for 30 years, more than 70% of PAO patients saw worsening of their hips in a 30 year time period. More than half ended up with full hip replacement within 30 years.
More details in a full interview with a young woman who was told she needed PAO.
