The first ever Deep Purple reaction on the channel. I was requested on Patreon to take a listen to Deep Purple - Child In Time 1970. There were so many things happening in this performance that that I was mesmerized by. The UK seemed to have some amazing bands during the 60's and 70's I'm looking forward to dive deeper into more older bands and even older bands from overseas.
Here is my reaction to hearing Deep Purple - Child In Time 1970 for the first time. I hope you enjoy it!

To people who aren't that immersed in keyboard players' world it might sound strange, but playing a Hammond keyboard is entirely different from playing any other keyboard. There are entirely different techniques to the art, many of them based on playing seemingly dissonant notes, playing legato (letting the tone continue) where a regular pianist/keyboardist would only do a quick tap, using the tone generator's resonance to create various effects, etc. Basically you can spend 10 years learning piano techniques, reading musical score from paper, getting a "feel" for the instruments.. then you start studying Hammond keyboard and throw away three quarters of the stuff you thought you knew, and study for another five or ten years to be a good player. There are rare exceptions of players who have a natural talent for playing in that manner, and those can turn the keyboard into a true Beast - like Jon Lord did.

The story behind Deep Purple's song 'Highway Star' is bonkers and really highlights just how good they actually were: They were doing an interview on their tour bus between venues, and the reporter asked them about how they wrote their songs. In response, front man Ian Gillan asked the reporter for a topic (a car was the choice), drummer Ian Paice to give him a beat, and bassist Roger Glover for a bass line. Guitarist Ritchie Blackmore then chimed in that he had a riff he thought would work, and John Lord (keyboard) joined in shortly thereafter. Within 15 minutes, the beginnings of 'Highway Star' had taken shape, and it was ready for performance by the time they arrived at their destination.

Don't be fooled by the specific performance, as it was in a television studio with a live television audience and they were actually told that they had to be as quiet as possible so that the performance could be recorded with that primitive setting. But there is other live footage from them at the time that looks a lot more like a regular Rock concert with people just going crazy and stuff. A lot of people when they first see this have that reaction as did i, but the reality is it's a very special situation but we're so lucky to have this footage because you get such good up close footage of them just all totally doing their thing and kicking ass. And the fidelity is great.

The bloke on the guitar is no other than the guitar wizard himself, Ritchie Blackmore, a true virtuoso! This is the classic Deep Purple line up: Jon Lord, organ, Roger Glover, bass, Ian Paice, drums, Ian Gillan, vocals, and Blackmore, guitar. Each one of these guys was/is a superbly accomplished musician in his own right with a perfect sense of time; but performances like this one come from practicing incessantly and a love for playing live (no autotune or special effects). Always gets me how Roger Glover is just shredding the bass line throughout Richie Blackmore’s solo

One of my top 10 favorite live rock performances in history. MetallicA's #1 main influence was Deep Purple. Wish I was in the audience, those lucky bastards lmfao.

Deep purple at one time in the 70s were the loudest band in the world, they knocked 3 of their audience unconscious with the sound. I saw them a the Kings Hall Belveiw uk in 1974 and I was deaf for days.

70's bleeding into the 80's music feels like a journey. They go through a whole saga in every song. Def explains the length and breadth (ground they cover in each track) of the songs.

That's the live 1970 version , the studio version has a little bit different guitar solo , you'd probably like that one also . Deep Purple has a bunch of jammin tunes , it's hard to go wrong with them !

Across so many live performances the interplay between Jon Lord on keyboards and Ritchie Blackmore on guitar was just mesmerising. Two absolute masters of their instruments and two of the absolute greatest names in rock. Blackmore inspired me to take up the guitar, and I have never been able to come close to what he could do. My all time guitar hero.

Deep Purple is one of those rare bands that sound better performing live. The quality of this video is outstanding considering it's 54 years old. They still perform live and I have tickets to see them this summer.

😮 Wooow!!
