I haven't done a live Metallica performance in a while and I haven't actually seen Cliff Burton play the Bass Guitar so I thought I'd react to that! I never actually knew or understood how important the bass guitar was or how important Cliff Burton was to the band. Now I know!
Here is my reaction to hearing 'Metallica - Anesthesia (Pulling Teeth) LIVE for the first time! I hope you enjoy!

Molly Boy you have got metal in your veins. After Cliff died in 86’ I wrote a letter to his parents saying I was a huge fan and my sorrow for thier loss and asked politely if they had any pictures of him they could part with so in 89 I received a letter from the Burtons SF call and I forgot about the letter so I opened it and they wrote me a 2 page letter and 4 pictures I asked for persollaly written by his mom!!! And I’m a personal friend of his older sister and we text and she rerified the letter was real and the address was were they lived at the time. I have letter and pictures if I could show you 🤘🤘🤘❤️‼️ keep Ripping it up. Play some early Exodus. I know my metal I’m 52 years old and been listening since 76’. If you play Day on the Green 85’ whom the bell tolls that were my pictures are from

Cliff was a beast. So extraordinary basist, you can just imagine how people felt that over 40 years ago. His influence on many basists and especially for Metallica music was huge. On top of having virtuous skills as basists, he had good knowledge of music theory, and that really helped Metallica to build their songs and style.

Hi Young Mollyboy. Now you must go 'for whom the bell tolls, 1985, a day on the green'. That's the next Cliff video (live) that I recommend. Cliff masterpieces also exist in 'Orion'and 'The call of Ktulu'. I suggest you look up a bass enhanced version of these two songs as the mix has the bass low. But the bass is the best parts in these two songs. A tribute song to Cliff, after his death, is 'To live is to die'. It's a great studio version to dissect and I've seen others in your comments request it. May I also suggest 'master of puppets, Seattle 89'. As this is a live version of master of puppets, that begins with a shortened version of to live is to die in honour of Cliff with their new bass player at the time, Jason Newsted, in his first major tour performing a tribute with James and Kirk for Cliff. It's hair raising. Thanks for the vids Mollyboy.
@jipaksi

I want to mention few bonus tips to listen. As you already listened Orion, other instrumental where Cliff can be heard is Call of Ktulu, on their 2nd album. He does some really fancy stuff with his bass on background, kinda presenting the beast in the song. It can be bit hard to hear if not focusing, but there's even actually some bass enchanced versions on youtube. And for this Anasthesia, if you want to hear Cliff's insipred version, Metallica did joined concert with San Francisco Symphony orchestra, and their lead double basist made hits tribute to Cliff playing this. Worth to listen, and watching the faces of Metallica band members cheering after he's finished. :) "(Anesthesia) Pulling Teeth (Tribute to Cliff Burton ) - Metallica & San Francisco Symphony (S&M2)" is the title of video if you want to see it.

My step father-in-law was standing in front of the stage during this show, working security. He told me the band were a bunch of good kids, so down to earth. He said they were different, and he knew they'd go far. BTW, this is why some people give And Justice... so much crap, knowing how talented Cliff was and then deciding to mute Jason completely. Even so, I still love And Justice...

Nice job finding this. I remember the first time hearing this on a walkman = mind blown! What great vid of the metallica major rager. You didnt go wrong watching this first. Its an killer version. Ive been a fan of Cliff since 86, started playing in 92. I was playing some fuzz bass today. I actually have never seen this particular solo in its entirety. Ive seen parts of the show on other videos and have the audio. Whats good is you can see the pickup mods he did to his bass. He replaced the stock pickups with a Gibson EB pickup and to get his super high frequencies he installed a single coil near the bridge. He literally build a one-of-kind bass. Its one of the reasons he has such a unique overdriven sound. He also used Big Muff and the Morley Fuzz Wah and a whole lot of attitude.

Because bass players typically use their fingers instead of a pick, the sound is much softer. That combined with the extra thick strings gives it a warm fuzzy sound reminiscent of a synth or computer sound. He has done this on several occasions, like For “Who The Bell Tolls.” My personal favorite example is his work on Orion. The intro is a minute long bass part that stays on the lower octaves. But in the second guitar solo, cliff can be heard mimicking the guitar an octave or two higher, and because of the computer like sound, it matches the space theme because it sounds like those sounds that people pick of from space, or satellites. And then there’s his solo at the end, which couldn’t sound more like space. To elaborate on this type of sound from the bass, cliff isn’t the only one to do this. A good few have tried, a good example is muse. More of a modern rock band, the bass can easily be mistaken as synth.

Different guitar/bass pedals can achieve all kinds of crazy sound and effects. It’s cool what a bassist/guitarist can pull off with mixing different sound. Cliff’s main thing was mixing the distortion and wah pedal to get his own sound. That sound is so ill and really became his signature... I really miss it.

Cliff was phenomenal. Even Jason Newsted referred to Cliff as the Jimi Hendrix of the bass. Most people don't realize that Cliff does the intro on "For whom the bell tolls". Go back and listen real hard to the whole Master of Puppets album and hear him all over it. Orion is so fucking bass heavy.

The man. The myth. The legend.... Cliff is my all-time favorite bassist. He applied his classical knowledge to his playing, making it more melodic (hence, his influence on Metallica's more melodic, timeless songs for their first three albums), but also his sound was so killer but original and his playing was just so natural and an extension of his soul. Sometimes I wonder what Metallica would sound like today if Cliff was still here... Imagine an “Orion, The Second Coming” or something. Man, oh man... Rock In Peace, CB.
