Hip Movements in the Baseball Swing

Coiling as part of your load forward not only helps with pace and adjustability, it helps create stronger hip turn. Coiling internally rotates the rear femur and puts the external rotators into stretch. External rotation of the femur is what drives the hips open so by preloading them with coil we are able to create more force. Adding hip mobility and activation exercises into your strength program will help with these movements in your swing.

Looks like back hip internal rotation to me as evidenced by the rear knee. The rear foot is simply stabilizing against that

Something else I was wondering is how hitters back foot slides toward the third base dugout (if your a righty). I've seen this on miggy and trout. It doesn't seem like a very powerful move, but it allows them to hit the ball the other way, HOW DO THEY DO THAT? Perhaps that could be your next video?

What are your thoughts on playing subconsciously, and how would it benefit or detriment players?

I think there is a time for conscious and subconscious work. Working in front of a mirror or tee work can be spent in a more internally focused mindset, especially when a hitter is trying to make swing adjustments. Once the ball is moving (flips/bp) we should probably start to shift our mindset to be a little more subconscious. Of course, this depends on the hitter. Some guys need to be externally focused almost all the time, even in the cage. Others may be a little more analytical even in ball flight work. Game time is definitely a time to be very subconscious, it's time to compete, time to react not think.

Question: is too much of the back foot slipping bad? From what I've seen I've seen it have negative influence

Yes, really any slipping of the back foot towards the catcher is an energy leak. I just like to use those examples because it shows the direction of force that is being created in the rear hip joint.

It’s hip load not quad load, don’t twist the quad, you load the hip to help create stretch in the torso, not to drive out of the lower body
