I’m just getting into backpacking at 40 years old. I had no idea feet could go at such an angle to the ground. Who’d have thought backpacking would bring me to learn more about this body at my age. Thank you so much. Always learning.

Thanks Chase! The last few weekends my hip/groin have been seizing up on me while hiking, this weekend the worst it's been. I have a doc appt in a couple of weeks but will be doing this + the daily movement routine until then. One thing was clear right away, my hips are *tight*

Just a heads up to be careful with the "kid sit". It's also called a "W" sit and is known to put a lot of pressure on the hip socket if taken to far. Some people can do this without causing damage, but many people have minor (or major) impingements in their hips that will cause damage to the hip joint if they go too far. My wife has practiced yoga for most of her adult life, hyper flexible, but has now had one hip surgery (at 38), with another surgery on the other hip coming in the next 5 years.

True, I think I might have the old Celtic hips as well, but yeah it's not gonna be accessable to everyone. Just something to explore.

Hmmm. “W sitting” or the “kid sit” for an adult might not be a bad idea, but please don’t let your kids sit this way…developing hip joints will thank you later! Cross-legged sitting is a much better alternative for kids (and most adults) as External Rotation is much easier on the tendons, ligaments, and joint capsule. (And typically lacking in most Westerners) That much Internal rotation range of motion (from W sitting) is way outside what would be considered necessary ROM even for high level activity such as outdoor activities and sport-related activity. I’m not trying s* on you routine brother I had no problems with any of the other stretches in this video! Good content!

I know this is meant to be for hips but doing this routine seems to have pretty much sorted a knee problem that I've had for nearly three years. I've had loads of physio and advice but nothing has helped as much as doing this.

@chrisswan4257
@chrisswan4257 2 года назад
@@LorenzoCucurachi not sure what that is. A scan showed wear behind the patella. I felt like there was a lot of tension and inflammation but these exercises really helped alongside transitioning to barefoot running!
@LorenzoCucurachi
@LorenzoCucurachi 2 года назад
@@chrisswan4257 did you get rid of the pain? Can you exercises without pain now?
@chrisswan4257
@chrisswan4257 2 года назад
@@LorenzoCucurachi yes. I have to keep on top of my game though. If I don't do these stretches the pain sneaks back. But it's more holistic than that. I've started from the feet up. Check out some of the vids on chase mountains about strengthening feet and ankles. That was the starting point for me when things started to improve. The hip stretches were the icing on the cake and I noticed a big decrease in pain. Now running 3 times a week (barefoot)! Cheers Chase! 👍

like I said, ease off a bit and work in a pain free range, The kid sit... its a bit of a flex, a long term goal perhaps.
@jasonburke4665
@jasonburke4665 2 года назад
Is it dangerous to allow your knees to extend beyond your toes with any exercises?
@seaotter52
@seaotter52 2 года назад
No it's not typically dangerous. Just don't force it in the beginning. Your knees go past the toes often in the course of the day. Look at what happens when you squat down or go down a hill. As a teenager in the 60s, the coaches never stressed that. Both Chase and the Knee over Toes Guy and Squat University and others have shown that it is not a dangerous thing to do if done properly. Edit. Like so many things, it is dependent upon the exercise you're doing and the weight involved. Be smart and take it slow and measured.

I've been told this by several people, but have been doing this kid sit all my life (much easier for me than a lotus sit). Never did give it up. I turn 58 in less than a month and still regularly hike 12 mile days with no leg or knee pain. So it sure seems like an urban myth to me.
