Get some starting strength coaches on the podcast to debate it out! Specifically, Jordan Feigenbaum and Austin Baraki would be great!

There are no muscles designed to keep you upright; the back and abdominal musculature exists to stabilize the trunk- i.e. keep it rigid, irrespective of horizontal orientation to the surface of the planet. Argument invalid.

Check out the Max Aita squat. Very clever - very experienced very easy to listen to lifter Makes a nice comment about older squatters and squatting healthy and strong as we age. You don’t see many of any lifters in their 40s squatting Rip style- they shift to a more upright technique after a litany of injuries. I want to be squatting healthy and strong for a long time- I think he makes some sound points - as does Max Aita
@ilhberg
@ilhberg 7 лет назад
The way you described Rip's squatting method is not how I understand it. The Starting Strength model teaches you to break at the hips and knees at the same time, with the knees being set in the first 1/3 to 1/2 of the descent. I can say from experience that when I focus on getting my knees forward and out early, instead of pushing my hips back first which leads to knee slide in the hole, I have a lot less discomfort in my SI joint. To summarize, I don't think there's much difference between how you and Rip describe a proper squat.
@THEwolf1337
@THEwolf1337 7 лет назад
Eric Askins The part of Rip's squatting form that mind pump says is wrong is coming out of the hole. Rip teaches you to use your back and hips with your hips pushed back. What the doc says is that causes to much grinding or pressure on the SI Joint.
@Malfeas
@Malfeas 7 лет назад
Except that is not the SS model for coming out of the hole. Rip emphasizes what he calls 'Hip Dahrive', which is having your hips go straight up (not back), ie loading the quads just like 'Muscle Doc' is saying. MD has an extremely flawed view of the SS material. Don't believe me? Just look at any video on youtube of Rip instructing someone and he always tells them to drive straight up, never back. In actuality the MD is teaching a near identical squat technique. MD may be well educated on anatomy but is poorly read on what he is critiquing.

@Mind Pump TV, could you please make a video addressing SI Joint dysfunction and injuries and how to heal them to move forward and progress in lifting. I injured my back doing bent over barbell rows about 2 years ago and my physical therapist said that it was my SI Joint that I injured but he has yet to be able to help me heal it so it doesn't hurt. PLEASE HELP! Thanks for all of the continuous knowledge that you guys always share!!!!
@dave82au
@dave82au 6 лет назад
So let me get this straight... You claim that a forward lean of the torso under load is inherently injurious to the SI joint, and hence hip-dominant squats are dangerous while knee-dominant squats are safe. But what about the deadlift? Surely this claim that forward lean of the torso under load is also, perhaps inadvertently, implying that deadlifts are inherently unsafe, since deadlifts use an even greater forward lean of the torso under even greater loads. It doesn't add up. (Unless, of course, you're just making up this supposed SI joint risk. That would explain why we don't actually see any former lifters walking on crutches.)
@ML-nj8fq
@ML-nj8fq 6 лет назад
I believe everyone can out work or fix their squat even when they have long femurs, but leverages arent always related to height. the 6’3 guy doesnt have long femurs (relative to his torso) I know a girl that is only 5’7 or so but he definitely has long femurs, relative to her torso.

Whenever I watch these instructional videos I get the feeling, that nobody is doing it right, everything goes to shit if the slightest adjustments errors come in to place and you probably die instantly. And all these little cues feel like they are made for powerlifters wanting to put that extra 5 lbs on the bar, but not for everage Joe who just wants to squat save and progress a little to work against sitting in front of a monitor 9 hours straight.
@williams7787
@williams7787 6 лет назад
fg Hey man I agree with you and all these little cues are actually very individual to a trainee and won't necessarily help everyone. Here's my opinion; you can take it or leave it. The most important cues for the squat for anyone is: - bend and extend at knees and hips simultaneously (when descending and ascending respectively) - keep weight over midfoot through the entire movement You can create other smaller cues for yourself if it helps you do those two things. Hope this helps you and saves ya time!
@fg786
@fg786 6 лет назад
If I feel it in my calves, I have leaned too much forward, doing a good morning. The weight is too heavy then. The bar rests on the back but there is no need to push it into your back. The width of your stand and the outwards rotation of the foot depends on the lifter. I do not like standing too wide, it feels awkward. My feet are fairly straight forward. These are my cues (+ the your 2) I build up to in 2 years of squatting and learning the movement.

Lots of big lifters good morning squats. Ed Coan good morninged squats. He even cues to push off the weight off the shoulders and let the body do what it natural as far as extending the legs when coming up. Moving the most weight and doing it in the best way do not go hand in hand. The low bar squat naturally encourages a bent over form and pushing with the back. A lot of people do it. It's why I switched to high bar which allows me to stay more upright and load the quads rather than the back. Low bar is definitely hard on the back even if it does allow you to move more weight, especially when deadifting in the same week.

What's also funny is that the freeze frame for the video shows Jordan squatting with his knees only about an inch in front his toes, and his hips BACK. It's almost like you can't shove your knees forward and stay upright under maximum loads in the lowbar position...
