Hiring coaches is VERY different with a custom 'fantasy' league. The real MLB league has a ton of great coaches available. But for a generated fantasy league the pickings can be very, very slim! You are lucky if you can even find Good rated coaches and often have to accept Poor rated guys because there just isn't anyone else available to hire. The fantasy coaches typically all start very young. I think the expectation is that they will develop and improve over time. Stealing coaches from other teams is really important if you want to get anyone good in the first few years. As is protecting the ones you have with excellent contracts so they aren't tempted to jump ship and promoting them to higher levels.
For those who didn't know the coaches relationships with the players depend on their "favor" attributes and their other nuances... So for example if you have 5 starters who are veterans and mostly power pitchers you need to match them up with a Pitching coach that favors pitching, veterans and power pitching. This would be an optimal kind of match up for your lineup and should make them play a little better than if they had bad relationships. Of course you could also get a Bench coach that prefers Pitching and veterans too, then you'd have 2 out of the main 3 coaches that favor pitching veterans, which should be ideal for your starting lineup but then your hitting may be a little less effective. Or sometime i have a neutral bench coach and then the pitching and hitting coaches to favor their respective coaching types.
Good info! Do you value this over the general relationship type the coach has with that player? I prioritize that one and kinda ignore the rest of relationships.
For the AGM I look to align their preferences to mine, since I use their opinion on trades as a sanity-check to my own thoughts so want them similar to me.
one other important thing (to me) that wasn't touched on here: when hiring a new coach, using the "ALL PERSONNEL" tab at the top, rather than just the "FREE AGENT PERSONNEL" tab, opens up way more options, especially for the major league team. many teams stash excellent coaches in their minor leagues that you can easily poach for your major league or AAA teams that way.
Hey PF, so you put little to no weight into personalities of the staff? I get so crazy trying to make sure there are few conflicts that way as possible...
Do you pay attention to staff cohesion? Especially at the minor league levels. If all 3 coaches are “legendary” but they don’t work well together, I wonder how much negative influence there is from the game engine. What are your thoughts?
Does it only show relations with the major league players? Even with the minor league coaches? What is the benefit of that? Does it matter? I can't seem to find any coach with any relationships other than thise on the MLB roster, even my A and lower
