Outlaw Star end theme song Hiru no Tsuki, sung by Akino Arai. Art by Tanaka Hikaru.
Original lyrics:
Oto no nai mahiru
Kaze wa tada akarui
Sukoshi nemutasou ni hanabira ga yureta
Nani ge nai kono omoi
Nee, hito wa donna kotoba de yondeiru no
Shiroi suna no tsuki toji kometa hanashi o
Hikari furasu you ni kikasete ne sotto
Itsuka shiru toki ga kuru no? Mune no itami o
Soshite ima yori yasashiku naru no ne
Atatakai kono omoi
nee, hito wa donna namae de yondeiru no
Shiroi suna no tsuki mabushikute mienai
tooi mirai no koto kikasete ne sotto
English translation:
One soundless midday,
The wind was so cheerful.
Flower petals swayed in the breeze
As if they were sleepy.
This serene feeling
Tell me, what's the word people use for it?
Tell me a story that's locked away
In the white-sand moon.
Let me hear it
As gently as light shining down
Will the time come? When you will know the pain in my heart?
Then you'd be able to be gentler than you are now.
Such a warm feeling
Tell me, what's the name that people give to it?
Softly, let me hear
Of the distant future,
So bright it can't be seen,
Like a white-sand moon.
Melfina's English version from the show:
I don't know what words I can say
The wind has a way to talk to me
Flowers sleep, a silent lullaby
I pray for reply, I'm ready
Quiet day calms me
Oh serenity, someone please
Tell me, what is it they say
Maybe I will know one day
I don't know what words I can say
The wind has a way to talk to me
Flowers sleep, a silent lullaby
I pray for reply, I'm ready

Funny, that's what my generation said about the 80s. But to be real, those two decades were the last of what was an incredible time for anime - where studios could literally say 'screw it, our budget is huge!' and do literally anything. More unique and original shows came out in those twenty years than anything that's come out since, with perhaps the exception of the first ten years of the 2000s. After 2010 everything just...wasn't the same.

There are people here that seem to feel bad because they realize we're starting to show our age all the sudden. Don't feel so bad, everyone. Once upon a time, we looked up to our betters - those that had come before us and helped pave the way for us, guiding us into these wondrous fandoms. And now, here we are. We are the elders, now. And it is up to us to help guide our younger ones as we were once guided ourselves. Don't be sad. Yes, much time has passed. But we still remember these things almost like it was yesterday. Take joy in that fact, and share these beautiful gems of our past with the new generation, so they too can know their magnificence.

Hearing this after so long takes me back to a better time. I was in high school during the birth of the 2000's. Portable CD players, Windows XP, and AIM was my tech world back then. Adult Swim back in its day had some good classics such as Outlaw Star, Inuyasha, Cowboy Bebop, Lupin the 3rd, Big O, Ghost In The Shell, Trigun, Wolf's Rain, and many more. I can remember setting my VCR to record those late school night shows, only finding it hard to sleep, and watching them anyway. Teachers always wondered why most of us came in tired the next morning. Though the tapes have long since been lost for many reasons, the memories of those days are still with me. With the current state the world is in right now, this video offers a feeling of comfort, and for that, I thank you for uploading.

I got an alert this video wasn't available in my country anymore and for the past few weeks I've been super bummed but now it's finally back and I can listen to it in its entirety instead of the short opening! 🥰

I sing the English version very often (even today) just because it's so beautiful and haunting. I know the Japanese version when it plays, but not stand alone. Anime songs back then were another dimension. And to learn how to say the Japanese words I had to constantly write down how it sounded to me rewound, listened again, write down. Repeat. Syllable by Syllable. And now they're all a part of me.

May not be the best anime ever, but its at or near the top of my list. Something about it. Space adventure with magic, pretty interesting mystery, and a gun that shoots spells? Yes, please. Those enegry shields in his gloves where pretty awesom at the time, as well. Hadnt seen that before. Deffinetly an anime that sparked my young imagination. And this beautiful song is a fantastic coda.

What I once heard about the ending is that the creator of Outlaw Star has a huge sweeping universe that he writes in, and that these ending photos take place in that universe. Outlaw Star is happening and so are all of these other events!
@KyeEnzoden

There's another Anime called Angel Links, that just as you said, takes place in this universe. Duuz and Valeria from the episode Law and Lawlessness are in it apparently.

so uh, i've been living my whole life with this song playing through my mind but i didn't know what it was, (i'm a gen z kid so, you know im guessing this show is older than me.) i had only heard the english translation though, so i could never find this through looking up lyrics until i happened upon it on my mom's old ipod. it was like a religious experience, just intense nostalgia like... yeeting me man. who would've thought an anime ost would be this striking?

Maybe you've heard Fat Jon's "Talk To Me". That song used the English version of the lullaby. I was born in 1998 and knew about this anime but not the song. I should watch Outlaw Star now.

😭😭😭😭😭My childhood!! Toonami- OutlawStar!!!! I used to draw this when I was younger and between elementary and Highschool I drew nearly all the ending pictures from this❤️❤️I recorded it on a blank VHS tape and would go back and pause the screen for hours trying to get them down just right....until a friend showed me I could print them after school at the library😅😅 Damn it was such a time to be alive y'all!
