It wouldn't be. But associating with criminals and staying up to 5 am the night before a game... annnnnnnd potentially betting on your own games that you're playing.... yikes. That would be a problem. Also, this was the 90's. We didn't have the information nor tolerance toward addictions that we have now. Moral codes were also different. Also the Black Sox scandal in baseball, and the Pete Rose scandals in baseball... well, they made people weary about ahtletes gambling. And people who had been through the Depression and fought in World War II were younger than what Baby Boomers are today. It was a different era in the USA, dude. But it was still more similar to 2021 than dissimilar.

@@pwnedd11 i get if youre shaving points or betting on your own games but there was no allegations on MJ for that. he had an addiction to gambling that was no question dumb and possibly detrimental. if he did anything illegal with the criminals or his gambling ala pete rose then i get it but all his allegations were more personal than legal.

It's been cleared up by The Last Dance. Michael didn't violate league rules or the law. He violated people's expectations. He retired and David Stern (God rest his soul) said he never suspended him. He retired before of exhaustion and because he wanted to fulfill a promise he made to his dad; just give baseball a try.

I tend to believe Jordan had a gambling obsession or problem. I don't think it necessarily negatively effected his money. He owed someone a million dollars? Perhaps instead of allowing a ten or four point shot. They could penalize either the team or player? By only allowing one point to be scored. No matter the range the player or team can only score 1 until its penalty time limit is reached. Imagine the possible legendary rallies this could produce.

Now that I think about it, I'm calling bullshit on the "gambling suspension" conspiracy theory. If he actually was suspended, Bud Selig (who was Commissioner of Baseball was at the time) would have placed him on the permanently ineligible list before he even reported for Spring Training for the White Sox organization. Keep in mind that Jordan's first retirement came just 4 years after Pete Rose got banned. Pete Rose is one of the greatest baseball players of all time, and still holds the Major League record for hits, and if HE could get banned for life, then Jordan wasn't safe from the wrath of Selig either. Additionally, then-Yankees owner George Steinbrenner was banned (later reinstated) for paying a gambler to dig up dirt on Dave Winfield. Gambling is considered Baseball's Cardinal Sin

@@Kr4v3rd it should also be pointed out that Willie Mays and Mickey Mantle got banned from baseball for *taking jobs as greeters at casinos in Atlantic City,* despite the fact that they were both long retired, already in the Hall of Fame, and were not employed within baseball in any capacity, and despite the fact that said Casinos did not offer sports betting (which was illegal in New Jersey at the time).
