Matt has told the story about how his very first concert was Pentatonix, he has studied music and particularly acapella - when he learned PTX was looking for a bass singer, he memorized all of the bass parts from their music before he auditioned. You can tell how much he enjoys being a part of the group.

You are absolutely right…Matt didn’t come in to fill anybody’s shoes…he came in to be Matt! That he is such a perfect fit was unexpected and I think not only due to Matt, but in a huge way due to the other members of PTX!!! They ALWAYS play to each others strengths…Matt was no exception ❤

Notice that Kevin sings during the song between his beat boxing! In fact, one of those high notes at the end is Kevin! But even during Kirstin's duets you can see Kevin singing. Then immediately breaking in to magnificent drums. Kevin's talents are off the charts, but are often overlooked. ❤

It pretty much IS an angel choir, lol! This arrangement is a masterpiece, absolutely stunning! They choose who sings entirely to serve the music and they have an admirable lack of ego about it. They are all incredible, could be, and ARE, solo artists, but the combination of their voices is uniquely PTX and beautiful. They all have gigantic ranges, too, so you're right, they can sing each other's parts if they want to, it's just a matter of who is right for the song. Scott's voice has a lot of power, grit, and soul, and he does lead off a bit more than anyone else. He is the most extroverted and does about half the talking, so if anyone can be called leader it would be him, but they don't think of it that way I don't think. Mitch's effortless beauty was perfect for the Celine part. His voice is often described as angelic (though I love it when he goes into sassy voice). Kirstin has a very strong, poppy, belt that nobody can touch. Kevin is the beatboxer but he has a beautiful tenor voice and a strong falsetto, too. Avi in Bohemian Rhapsody, and Matt in this, and in Sound of Silence, provide the bass, but both can sing well into baritone range and do both solo. When they do, you'll notice Scott drops down to carry the bass line.

Over the years I've put this one and "Hallelujah" on my list of masterpieces of a cappella. In fact, of all PTX, those two are their masterpieces.Both vocally and visually, "The Prayer" drifts ethereally around the perfect harmonies. Beautiful. You and Dan are picking winners to share.

Just found your channel... I soooooo appreciate your discussion... Matt, I believe, was a fan of PTX when they started... and Avi helped them pick his replacement. And Matt's "You're a Mean One, Mr Grinch" really showcases his voice and personality. As to Kevin... I'm quite biased towards him. But it wasn't until their 2022 Christmas Tour and the 17+ minute video named "Kevin's 5th" made it on RU-vid that my bias skyrocketed beyond the stratosphere... trust me you'll both be amazed.

Was so glad to hear you mirror my feelings on Matt to a tee!!! I bristle a bit when I hear people say Matt “replaced” Avi…he didn’t!!! Matt does Matt…he has carved himself a niche in PTX that is all his own…. I’ve said it before, a lesser group could/would not have survived losing such an integral part of their group…they were able to find Matt and he is such a PERFECT fit!!! Sure, I miss Avi, but Matt can hold his own and actually adds to the completeness of Pentatonix ❤

I have soft spot for Matt. In his early years with PTX, he had to go through all the comparisons and at not a few times, belittling. But he has this positive and happy attitude. In an interview he said it was a challenge or struggle for him - to be compared. Love this song too. Hello to Dan

Can't say matt is better than avi but he definitely did well feeling into the shoes in the bass department he has a potential since his younger maybe one day he can be the best bass out there.

Sure, I'd enjoy seeing more of Dan! I used to sing in a mostly a cappella girls' trio, to I can tell you're genuine a/cap musicians from the way you pick out the background details and the interesting notes from the chords. Dan sealed it by mentioning the vibrato. Don't get me wrong--I also enjoy watching reactors who aren't knowledgeable about music, but the interactions between the two of you made this video especially enjoyable. Thanks!
