HISTORATHON 2024
Historathon is a year-long celebration of reading historical nonfiction. The goal is to read, discuss, and spotlight works of history, and to encourage reluctant readers to give history a try. The calendar year will be divided into three-month blocks, with each block focusing on a particular period of time:
Jan-March = Prehistory-500 CE
April-June = 500-1500
July-Sept = 1500-1820
Oct-Dec = 1820-Present
To participate, simply read a work of history that falls into the time period for each quarterly segment of the year. Read more if you’d like! Tailor the choices to your interests or try something completely new.
Historathon "Side Quests": We will also be encouraging/participating in history-related activities throughout the year, including watching historical films/documentaries, trying historical recipes, listening to historical music, etc. Feel free to join us!
We will be using the hashtag: #historathon2024

May the middle-ages quarter arrive peacefully this year! ;-)
@marianamasbooks
I’m excited for Q2! 🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼
@TriumphalReads
Q2 discord is going to be lit lol
@GentleReader01
I’ve got late antiquity reading left over from last year, and another Popol Vuh translation and commentary, some Korean and Indian history…I’m well set.
@battybibliophile-Clare
I can't believe Q1 went so fast. I have loved my Historathon Q1 reads.
@aliciacampos5789
My first read for quarter two will be powers and thrones: A new history of the middle ages by Dan Jones. Since I couldn’t find a used copy for a decent price, I ordered a new one from Amazon. It just arrived and it’s ripped and dirty, so I’ll have to return it and get a new one. That’s the first time that’s ever happened. Boo

I will be reading The Burgundians, which spills over the period at both ends, but is the tale of the rise (ad transformation) of the Habsburgs writeen by Bart van Loo. He has a great sense of humor, which helps when the book is 600 pages long and full of obscurities...
@battybibliophile-Clare
I'm reading the Wars of Justinian at the moment, it is both before and after 500 AD. I have a whole list to follow on from that.
@BryanM.R.-wt9eb
Now THAT'S a thumbnail!
@theramblingreviewer5150
I only ended up reading one book for Historathon Q:1. I read the Cicero biography by Anthony Everitt. I've got a few ideas for the second quarter, though.
@katjack2780
I'm still dithering about my Q2 choices, but the contenders appear to be:
@TimeTravelReads
I know I'm reading about Anglo-Saxons and Burgundians, and I think Femina.
@AaronReadABook
My wallet is not looking forward to all the pile of possibilities videos for this quarter, the middle ages are my favourite.
