Hey there! Just came across your channel yesterday while searching for reviews for the Landmark Anabasis. Currently reading the Landmark Herodotus and figured Anabasis would be my next purchase. However, this Historathon thing your doing is a pretty neat idea. I also have too many books on my shelves that I've yet to read. I guess it would be better for me to finish reading those before buying more. It's a problem many of us readers have hehe. I still need to finish up Herodotus, but once I'm done, I'll join in on this Historathon! Just like you, my main interest regarding this era is the Early Medieval Era, so most of my purchases deal with this period rather than the High and Late Middle Ages. Fortunately, I have a bunch of unfinished or unread medieval era books on my shelves so I won't have to buy any. So far, I have finished Beowulf, John Skinner's translation of The Confession of Saint Patrick, and Jackson Crawford's Poetic Edda, all of which are enjoyable reads. Though the latter will definitely illustrate just how brutish the Vikings could be. Regardless, the Poetic Edda is a good book that I look forward to rereading. In time, I'll get to Jackson Crawford's other books as well. My "pile of possibilities" include: Adomnan of Iona's Life of St. Columba, Early Christian Ireland, How the Irish Saved Civilization, Medieval Monasticism, Religion and the Rise of Western Culture, The Abacus and the Cross, Aristotle's Children, and Early Buddhist Japan. Interestingly, Japan's 6th and 7th centuries are considered part of the country's classical period. The Japanese Middle Ages don't begin until the late 1100s. I might also just go ahead and reread the Edda and Beowulf. Time will tell. Well, back to Herodotus! Happy reading! Glad to have come across this channel btw!

I picked up "The Owl and the Nightingale," too. Wouldn't mind reading that together if you get around to it next quarter. Guess I still need to get around to showing all those Princeton books one of these days.

Awesome list! 🎉 The Fires of Lust is also on my PoP since you showed it in your haul. That Women Troubadours book looks so cool! The topic and the cover, too bad it was a used bookstore find haha! I’ll look to see if I find a similar one anyway 🤓 I find Troubadour culture, courtly love and all that extremely fascinating.

One of my choices for this period is Georges Duby's "The Legend of Bouvines".

I think there is, perhaps, only a single book on here I wouldn't be excited to read! I'll definitely be keeping an eye out for your thoughts on these, especially that Valkyrie book and The Owl and the Nightengale (which I've heard of but never read!)

Nice choices, Vin. I have several of those Crawford translations. No complaints so far, but it's not as if I can read the originals to judge properly. Yet. 😁 I might have to pick up copies of Norse America and When the Dead Rise. Both sound great! Fire? Lust? Sex? Middle Ages? That title is working to hit all the special spots, isn't it? 😜 Hope it's a great quarter!

Im planning on reading the Saga of Erik the Red and/or the Saga of the Greenlanders in April to coincide with Spring Into Adventure and Historathon.

I have been away and its appears i have missed most of this ? But i will join in for sure in July, as i have my June reading all planned, but I just love historical non fiction.

My other channel is about metal detecting, Detecting Daft. Found an Anglo-Saxon spot in north Lancashire which could be a missing link between Dublin, Isle of Man, through Morecambe Bay and on through north of England to York. Best wishes with your reading choices.

I love Jackson Crawford. I've read The Poetic Edda, but ive not read that translation. Oooh, Norse America looks really interesting. Ive also got Children of Ash and Elm which i might try to get to sometime in the next few months. And a biography of Muhammad.

If anyone is interested, I just came across a RU-vid video of Katherine Harvey giving a talk on her book at the Mortimer History Society eight months ago. Typing in Dr. Katherine Harvey: Sex in the Middle Ages should get you there. Kathryn Warner came out with a book on this subject in 2022: Sex & Sexuality in Medieval England. Evidently a hot topic...
