I have said for TWENTY years that Putin’s claims about Nato are just a red herring distraction. So have thousands of other serious history and foreign policy analysts. Putin simply wants to conquer Ukraine as a pure revanchist act of rank land imperialism in order to recreate his perverted notion of a restored Soviet Empire.

Unfortunately if the Russians go for Kiev the Unkranians sole option is to draw as much Russian blood as possible. Make 'em pay. If the Russians go all out they will technically win militarily but the Russians may get tired like they did in Afghanistan and Russia is not as strong as it used to be. And the Russians might not fight well offensively. This is a sacrifice that could pay dividends for future generations and the Russians might not like losing people. if the Ukrainians roll over and give up, Ukraine is finished as a nation, long and short term. Take the example of Poland....fight, fight, fight.

They have a lot of modern weapon aiming systems, ammunition and highly effective explosive reactive armor. But the main problem is the Russian Air Force. It has enough modern planes to crush the Ukrainian Air Force in a short time. The Ukraine only has around 70 Mig 29 and SU 27 which are long out of date and have little trained pilots. Then there is the Russian air defense which can cover the back of the Russian air support (fighter-bombers and attack helicopters). Ukraine does not have modern air defenses. Best let Putin invade Ukraine and suppress the population as Lukashenko has done in Belarus. Lukashenko like Putin knows how to deal with dissent - murder them or just break bones. Ukraine has no right to think they are a sovereign nation. Putin is a kind and gentle man and will treat the Ukrainies well provided they comply. He can always put some adverts on TV where he is bare chested wrestling with bears. The Russians love that and I am sure the Ukranians will as well. Russia has the right to move its borders back to where they were in Soviet times as the whole idea of soveriegn nations deciding their own fate is nonesense. So Poland and Hungary and the Baltic States should be invaded next. Then of course Xi Jinping has the perfect reason to invade Taiwan and of course by the same logic has the absolute right to do so.

I agree at 4:44 I believe Putin personally profits greatly off of Russia's hydrocarbon export economy and he sees that collapsing in 20 years with the transition to renewable energy. His demand to rollback NATO to pre 1999 could be an effort to carve out an east European sphere of influence he keeps dependent upon Russian gas to sustain his income. While he would benefit greatly by that, his fellow countymen will suffer economic hardship under the western sanctions his actions brought on. Putin is all about Putin.

@Blu Mahou That's not how NATO works... Poland can send troops to Ukraine and fight alongside Ukraine without ever dragging the other countries into the conflict. Look at how many Conflicts France is in.. Why isn't NATO fighting in the Sahel alongside France? The answer is because Article 5 only applies if that country is attacked directly meaning, If Poland were to join Ukraine and Russia were to bomb Warsaw then Poland could trigger Article 5 if it chooses, however, Polish soldiers getting bombed or killed in Ukraine would not, since Polish sovereignty is not being directly attacked.

@@antoinedemm7533 This is your point of view. Russia would have the opposite point of view seeing Polish soldiers in Ukraine. The difference between other conflicts and this conflict is that Russia is capable of nuking Europe, most probably in a couple of hours Europe would cease to exist if ie Poland invoke article 5. This is exactly the reason why Ukraine will never see NATO. Besides, this lady has no idea what she is talking about. Putin never engaged in a war he can't win. Taking Crimea was no problem as this was easy, historically Russian territory with the majority of population Russian. Taking Ukraine would need a lot more resources. It just won't happen. They are now claiming victory for sth that was never about to happen, let them have it. It looks like the US needs `war` so it can feed the ever-hungry military complex and block the selling of Russian gas to Europe.

Prophetic words. Anne Applebaum is a true expert on Ukraine. Mersheimer would be well served to read up on her writings so some day he might write something sensible himself. In her complete grasp of the complexities of the Eastern European history and, most importantly, her ability to read and understand the Russian autocrats, she resembles so much Dr. Zbigniew Brzeziński. Ukraine is not unique. Nations are blaming each other all the time. For Ukraine, it's neither the first time, nor the last. Most nations remember when they were abandoned and had to suffer. I live in Spain, where many lament the too weak support from the democracies during the civil war. My relatives in Finland lament the too weak support from Sweden when the Soviet Union invaded. My Swedish relatives think the Swedes supported Finland as much as they could. It will be just the same with Ukraine, if Russia invades: The EU will support, economically above all, and will be told to have done too little too late.
