I’m guessing they knew about the trade winds by the time that those settlers traveled to North America and going that way was easier than going straight across with their sails.
I can trace my line to John White. When I was younger I got a chance to read some of his diary. It doesn't answer any questions, but does leave things very open ended. The impression I've always gotten was he himself never knew for sure what happened because he wasn't allowed to investigate further. We may never know what happened to the colony.

One of the best series that I knew nothing about was the South Sea's Bubble, also their shorter ones on Urbino, the Christmas Truce, Saragahi, and the Berlin Airlift are amazing. Also pretty much everything by Historia Civilis but I think you know him already.
2:08 the route would look a bit more direct on a globe as apposed to being flattened out for the maps purposes. But keep in mind, during trans atlantic crossings, you were more or less at the mercy of the prevailing winds, while also having to avoid icier waters to the north.
