'The Innocents' Red Dead Online Posse: linktr.ee/the_...
'The Innocents' Discord: / discord
Today we're looking at the historical accuracy of Trains & Train Robberies in Red Dead Redemption II. For this week I used the Library of Congress Archives, which allowed me to acquire an abundance of primary source material from the period, particularly about train robberies at the turn of the century. For help with the train components, I consulted Kevin Wilcomb, the company historian for the Georgetown Loop Railroad in Georgetown, Colorado, and a steam locomotive engineer for over 35 years. Thank you for all your help, Kevin!
Music:
Track: Horses & Trains - Jesse Gallagher. Available on RU-vid Audio Library
Track: Covid Come Not Near - Nat Keefe & Hot Buttered Rum. Available on RU-vid Audio Library.
Fair Use Disclaimer: The fair use doctrine in U.S. copyright law allows individuals to use copyrighted material to create original works. It includes criticism, news reporting, research, and derivative works. Many RU-vid videos may use music or other snippets of other creations.
Train Inaccuracies:
(Note: Some of these apply to one train & not the other, some apply to both)
1) The beam that the cow catcher is affixed to is not wide enough. This is called the Pilot Beam and they generally, were the same width as the locomotive.
2) The headlight is an electric light which should be powered by a steam driven Dynamo mounted either behind the light or on top of the Boiler directly in front of the cab roof. the Dynamo is missing. If it was not an electric light, by the 1890s Kerosene Headlamps were still in use as well as Carbide Gas Lamps.
3) The locomotive has an Air Compressor but no visible Air Brake Equipment ie Brake shoes, brake rigging visible between the driving wheels, the Equalizing Tank under the cab is missing, there are no air brake controls or gauges visible in the cab from what I could see.
4) The Bell Chord is on the wrong side. Ringing the Bell was the Fireman's responsibility not the Engineer
5) The Coal space on the tender is too large. On a horseshoe tender like those shown in the game, fuel was stored in the front half to third, depending on the builder, of the tender, the rest was water storage.
6) The all brass sand dome is incorrect. Central Pacific Locomotives did have all brass Steam Dome covers, but they flared out at the top while the sand dome was made of sheet iron with cast iron , fluted, tops and bases.
7) Locomotive hand rails generally did not bend down like that. They usually stop at the end of the boiler jackets. This depends on the builder.
8) The brass band at the very front of the boiler should not be there, they were only used to hide the seams of the boiler jacketing.
9) The traction sand delivery pipe in front of the lead drive wheel is missing.
10) The locomotive is carrying an air compressor on each side, this is incorrect. Single Stage Air Compressors like these were carried on one side or the other not on both.
11) The front facing hand hold ( grab iron) would not be all brass. They were tube steel held in place with cast iron fittings
12) The train uses what are called Strap Brass Bearings and the bearing itself is in 2 pieces, split vertically and held in place on the crank pins by the strap and the wedge on the main and side rods of the locomotive. The model in the game does not have a split in the bearing and the strap is missing. in the game it is set up like a Bushing, but still has all the add-ons for a Strap Brass arrangement which is pointless if you have a bushing type bearing.
13) The Cab of the Thatcher Perkins model that I was watching on RU-vid shows a, mostly, standard arrangement from the early days of steam locomotives in the US, but if this engine was still in service in 1899 it would have been modified with a Hydro-static lubricator, air powered Sanding valves and air brakes for the train behind it. None of these are present in the cab from what I can see of it which , by 1899, would have been in violation of I.C.C. regulations for engines in passenger and freight service.
14) Both locomotives are missing their front cab doors they are shown as windows in the game.
15) The Thatcher Perkins is missing the air hoses that are supposed to be on the pilot.

@@ManvsHistory There's another huge reason to have water. Ironically, if you don't have enough, the boiler explodes! The fire in the firebox is hot enough to melt the steel it's made from. But by having water surrounding it the water absorbs the heat, thus maintaining its structural integrity. However, if the water level drops below the top of the firebox, there's nothing to keep it cool and it will start to melt. Once it's soft enough you have 150-200 psi blast through it. So yeah. No water, no choo choo indeed.

When Arthur and Lenny rob the train, usually Lenny goes ahead and I have to save him from an attack. 6:00 This story actually gets crazier the more you look into it. One of the bandits, one Elmur McCurdy, was later killed in a shootout. His corpse then spent the next seventy years touring the country, being passed from hand to hand until it ended up hung from the ceiling of a cheap novelty horror ride in Long Beach California, having been mistaken for a mannequin. It was only discovered that it was, in fact, a mummified and painted corpse when a worker tried to move it and an arm came off in his hands.

Other errors: stopping trains throw sparks from the tender wheels only, implying they alone stop the train. In one mission you uncouple the trailing cars by pulling the pin from a knuckle coupler. Knuckle couplers don’t have pins.

As a historical rail enthusiast I have to agree with what you've said. I'm also a budding Live Steam hobbyist and am working on a rideable minature steam locomotive. And I can attest to many of the missing parts and components of the locomotives. However, there is one aspect I feel was overlooked in terms of not just historical accuracy, but just plain old physics. And that were the Grades, or the steepness of the tracks. Most railroads tried to keeps grades to a minimum, but "steep" was considered to he around 2%. Or 2 feet of rise for every 100 feet of forward travel. However some railroads had grades as steep as 4.5%, but for relatively short distances. The steepest mainline railroad grade in the US is the infamous Saluda Grade in NC. With a Maximum grade of 4.9% but average 4.26% (if I recall correctly) and that was for nearly 3 miles. There's an extremely steep grade heading north through Roanoke Ridge and into Ambarino on the eastern side ofnthe map. Given the similarities of the region depicted by the map, maybe it's a nod to Saluda, but the grade looks like it's at almost a 45° angle. Which vastly exceeds the tractive effort of even the strongest locomotive of the tine in the US. At least not without some kind of mechanical advantage like a cog rail system. To gain elevation, railroads found creative ways to keep grades to a minimum, but still climb as needed. One way is to use a series of loops or curves to accomplish that. Sometimes even crossing over itself to do so. The old Morenci Southern Railroad in Arizona had five such loops, earning it's name of "America's Corkscrew". The large wooden trestles that comprised several of the loops were later torn down due to their expensive maintenance. They were replaced by switch-backs. Which are best described as Zig-Zags going up a steep hill or mountain side. Unfortunately, switch-backs required the train to stop and reverse direction in order to climb up the particular part of the switch back. And then stop and continue onward, depending on the number of switch-backs. Honestly, when it came to the teains in the game, that was my biggest gripe I have and ruins the immersion. Reminding me that this was a game and not some time in the past.
@ManvsHistory
@ManvsHistory 3 года назад
This is pretty fascinating stuff, AJ! Very cool! I appreciate you taking the time to add all this info. Can't say I had even thought about the grades!
@Kegg_Works
@Kegg_Works 3 года назад
@@ManvsHistory Absolutely no problem! It's always been an issue in games that have trains. For some reason, developers think they can run on track like a roller coaster. Which simply isn't the case. The Mt. Washington Cog Railway was the first of its kind in the world. There's a stretch of track near-ish to the summit that is at a 45-degree incline and was dubbed "Jacob's Ladder". For trains to climb such steep grades you have to have some kind of mechanical advantage where what they call "Adhesion" in the industry, just wouldn't be enough. Another railroad you may want to check out is the Nevada Northern. They have an amazing history with some amazing true stories. They're not only knowledgeable on locomotives, but nearly every facet of period railroading. They still have their vintage 1912 era passenger train, the "Steptoe Flyer". With all wooden passenger stock. Really good stuff if you're interested.

I'm two years to late but if you see this please respond with your thoughts. What do you think of doing a playthrough of Rdr2 story mode, but maintaining 100% (or to the best of your ability) historical accuracy. I know there is less customizations so it will be harder but I would love to see it and I would definitely watch the entire series. This would also include horses and if you want to take it a step further, eating meals like a regular person would

Trains actually had an bigger crew. You also had brakemen and conductors. Before air brakes you had to apply each car brakes by hand. Brakeman went car to car applying brakes. Conductors cut cars and lined switches like they do today. While I agree with your experts explanation of the switches, they are actually long enough to safely pass a train. Though the turnouts don’t have guard rails, they use self guarded frogs at times that require no guard rail.

Isn't the locomotive pipe wrong as well? If it is using coal it would be most likely east cost so the pipe would be straight up and down not the funnel style which was west coast becuase of the use of wood instead of coal. That way the embers from the wood would not start or would be less likely to start forest fires

What about craft able ammo would there be a point to slicing an X into your bullets (split points)
@theinnocents4002
@theinnocents4002 3 года назад
Kind of a crude "hollow point" deal if I'm not mistaken. Lead was easy enough to cut into. Cutting an 'X' into it would cause those 4 sections to fan out, be sharp, jagged and do more damage. I don't think it would cause your shots to be more accurate, though...

Any idea how much the it cost to replace the train that the James gang wrecked? I am guessing it was a heck of a lot more than the haul they got. Makes me think of when someone broke out the tiny trangle back window in my Blazer to steal 3 CDs and an old Garmin worth about $10 - the window was $300, the most expensive (but smallest) window in the vehicle. If they would have knocked on my door I would have given them $20 to just go away.
@ManvsHistory
@ManvsHistory 3 года назад
When you factor in damage to the locomotive and cars, lost revenue, injury claims, death claims, track repairs, etc, it would have certainly cost significantly more than the James Gang took, I can tell you that. Additionally, you have the absence of modern cranes and other heavy machinery to assist in the clean up. Nowadays a train derailment can be remedied in a matter of hours, or days. Back then however, it was a much greater ordeal. The gang was lucky they didn't kill dozens of passengers. I credit the flatness of Iowa.
