Městská hromadná doprava je nedílnou součástí života každého moderního města. Její vývoj je vždy úzce svázán s hospodářským a politickým vývojem celého regionu. Nejinak tomu bylo a je i na Ostravsku. Také zde se střídala poklidná údobí s méně klidnými, což se samozřejmě projevilo i v dopravě. Historii MHD na Ostravsku lze rámcově rozdělit do těchto období:

History of public transport in Ostrava
Public transportation is an integral part of every modern city. Its development is always closely linked with economic and political developments throughout the region. Geschichte des öffentlichen Verkehrs in Ostrava
Der öffentliche Verkehr ist ein integraler Bestandteil jeder modernen Stadt. Seine Entwicklung ist immer eng mit wirtschaftlichen und politischen Entwicklungen in der gesamten Region verbunden. War da keine Ausnahme und ist in Ostrava. Außerdem gibt es ruhige Zeiten mit weniger ruhig, was natürlich im Verkehrssektor wird reflektiert abwechselten.
