Professor Courtenay Raia lectures on science and religion as historical phenomena that have evolved over time. Examines the earlier mind-set before 1700 when into science fitted elements that came eventually to be seen as magical. THe course also question how Western cosmologies became "disenchanted." Magical tradition.

This lecture series has filled in the gaps for me regarding information I was exposed to during a near-death experience in 1976, in particular hermetic philosophy and the swing between numerical mysticism and reductive quantification of reality. I have listened to the whole thing at least ten times, and it has enriched me precisely in the areas that I am most passionately engaged. I am so grateful for Courtenay's dedicated scholarship and obvious delight in sharing her knowledge of the history of these three topics. If you are reading this, Ms, Rala, a deeply felt 'thank you.'

Is she pulling from Karl Popper and/or Teilhard de Chardin? Haven't read either, but some of the terms sound familiar.

First of all, the purpose of the Bible is epistemological, that is to say, to provide man access to the mind of God. Within this context, the mission of The Jesus was to validate man’s experience of God, existentially. The Lord’s Prayer is an epistemological process for accessing the mind of God for problem solving and action planning and not as a petition. The format of the Lord’s Prayer is the same as the 5 Paragraph Field Order employed my the US Army for action planning and execution. Both formulations can be summed up by Gandhi’s Think Globally - Act Locally prescription for systematic transformation. My personal experience and interpretation is that the Bible is an invitation to collaboration as reflected in Genesis 15:6 There is epistemology before Newton and epistemology after Immanuel Kant. Newton reconciles Descartes and Locke, which is to say, the traditions of inquiry associated with Plato (rational idealism) and Aristotle (empiricism). The Skepticism of Locke, Hume and Bishop Berkeley do not represent epistemology, but is a forensic methodology that is saved from descending completely into nihilism by Berkeley’s imposition of The Grand Perceiver. Within these limits, Hume’s Skepticism is essential to the integrity of the rules of evidence in both the legal and scientific milieu. Kant, of course famously, is awakened from his dogmatic slumber by Hume and writes A Critique of Pure Reason. I may have missed Dr. Raia’s reference to this work, and Kant, in her lectures, but virtually all the themes she develops around the Romantics as they influenced Modernism either appear in this work or is anticipated to be developed in his later publications, most important being the structures of the epistemology of transcendental idealism. These structures are, in themselves, synthetic a priori, a circumstance which reflects the source and expression of Newton. This influence can be traced through the thread of development she develops regarding the transmission of the concept of the “unconscious” from the work of Schelling’s System of Transcendental Idealism, via Coleridge to Freud, and thence, to Jung. Now, Freud intuits the topographical structures of the unconscious, which includes the unconscious, itself, the ego, which is the seat of consciousness, the pre-conscious, the id and the Super-Ego, but does not include certain operational components, including Reason and Passion. Aside from these structures, Freud does not include a synthetic a priori capacity and tends to reflect Locke’s “tabula rasa” native status (these features, along with Freud’s mechanistic concept of retained experiential data are echoed in L. Ron Hubbard’s Dianetics, especially his concept of ‘engrams”). While Jung essentially adopts Freud’s “tabula rasa” notion of the congenital content of the unconscious, he adds the “collective unconscious” to the larger structure of the psyche, which differs from the synthetic a priori not in the least, and certain functional structures of the ego, including: Thinking (Reason), Feeling (Passion), iNtuition, and Sensing. It is the integration of the unique differentiation of these functions that determines the singular qualities of the self. And these functional structures, when illuminated by the existential display of certain behavioral tendencies reflecting the unconscious bias favoring either Judging or Perceiving, and reviewed by statistical instrumentation, result in the epistemological modeling of the Myers-Briggs Type Inventory. Speaking as an ESTP, my best guess is that Dr. Raia is an ENFP. This is a direct result of Kant, While Dr. Raia is able to capture the incredible intellectual churning of the Enlightenment and all that followed, the choices she makes to arrive at Carlos Castanedes ignores Hegel and Marx, the latter being as influenced by the theme of the perfectibility of man in Shelly’s Frankenstein as Norman Vincent Peale or Tony Robbins. The entire field of performance metrics is anticipated by Newton, but Kant crosses the “t” and dot’s the “I” on the epistemology while escaping the snares of Hume’s methodology. Newton allows a believer to approach the nominal world like an atheist by filtering out the divine. Kant allows the atheist to leverage the nominal world with the divine across the fulcrum of the synthetic a priori. As Einstein observed, imagination is more important than knowledge and imagination has been the coin of the realm in the field of modern epistemology since Newton considered the apple and opened the doors to the new Eden.
