I mean.... for a long time now, most people have been kinda making up their own versions of these religions. One can participate, call themselves a Christian (or whatever) but they dont have to believe all the same things that everyone else does. Religion has moved to more of a personal relationship, it doesnt so much matter what one person believes.. someone else can believe something else, and have many different viewpoints but still consider themselves to be part of that religion.

The Church is undoubtedly a supremely canny operator - probably the biggest, very likely the richest and certainly the oldest corporation in the world. Its high level of prestige and influence remain virtually untouchable despite the numerous sexual and financial scandals which have benighted it the last few decades - any "actions" promised after any particularly egregious cases, are at least watered down subsequently - if indeed they happen at all - once the stink has subsided. It is literally a case of say the minimum at the time, be sincere but vague if public statements must be made, then go about your routine, smiling and waving and don't say, much less admit ANYTHING thereafter. They've been in business long enough to know that even the most far reaching government enquiry/judicial review/police investigation eventually goes away. They are used to playing the long game. Despite the assurances given, the minimum will be made public; more transparent - or result in any real policy change. Like everyone, they'll learn their lesson - not in the sense of desisting from kiddy fiddling or cooking the books - but on how to do those things in a more vigilant world - priests and bishops will simply become more wily and operate more subtly in a world with heightened awareness. The Church is EVERY bit as worldly and corrupt and greedy and hungry for power and influence and money as any Central African dictator, Middle Eastern oil sheikh, South American general, Russian potentate or global company CEO.... don't for one moment be fooled by the mostly softly spoken, somewhat effete, well tailored exteriors - I suspect multiple billions have gone through the Vatican and one suspects the way the Vatican has involved itself in the grubby, temporal business of money, property, investing and acquisition bears more resemblance to Cosa Nostra and omertà - than the Ten Commandments.... And even that has a precedent - without knowing the exact social status and educational attainments of each of them, it is possible to generalise that the Apostles themselves, were far from illiterate nobodies. "Simple fishermen" be buggered - a couple may have been but at least as many were part of fishing fleet owning families. I think Matthew was a tax collector. Very likely all of them could read and write - at a time when literacy was around 3% despite the fact the Jewish tradition had long valued it - and were bi- or tri-lingual.
