Rowling did such a great job with the dementors as personifications of depression. Trying to explain real depression to people used to be a lost cause as there was no frame of reference for people to understand. Now, all you have to explain is that it's like you have a dementor next to you 365 days a year and people have a better understanding. She really did help a lot of people by personifying it.

The Dementors are blind. Aragog gets blind at some point in his life. The Basilisk is blinded by Fawkes. I found this very noticable when reading the books. Blindness coming up again and again.

In a early script by JKR, the Dementors came to back up the Death Eaters during the battle in the Department of Mysteries and corner Sirius Black in the Death Chamber, wanting to kiss him for escaping them three times. Harry comes to late to help and moment before he is caught and kissed, Sirius throws himself through the Veil, escaping the Dementors one last time by literally choosing Death.

There is a question I'd love to ask J.K. someday. "Was Dudley actually a squib?". Think about it. J.K. Always included subtle word play into many of her characters. She names harrys cousin Dudley.... As in perhaps a magical 'Dud', which squibs technically all are. Plus squibs can't directly see most magic however they can sense it intensely. This could also feed into the theory that the dursleys were so horrible to potter because he was a horcrux and unknowingly poisoned their minds. Well a squib would be far more reactive to that force then a muggle, and out of the 3, dudley was the cruelest to harry. In order of the phoenix, when the dementors attack, dudley can clearly and very obviously sense them, while his two freinds are completely oblivious. And when vern asks dudley who did this to him, I got the sense that dudley acused harry not because he believed he attacked him, but because he suddenly realized that magic was real and if he could sense it he to might be as his mother put it..."A Freak", and in terror and confusion blamed harry. This may also explain why dudley in the deathly hallows actually comes to care about harry.... perhaps he figures out that he and harry have some deeper connection, something unexplainable. If that was J.K.'s intention and if dudley was a secret squib... that is truely a wonderful arc for dudley and I hope it's true.

Dementors were always visually my favorite creatures in Harry Potter. I believe the only reason I started watching the films was because I had seen them in a trailer or advertisement and wanted to know more about them. When I found out their nature, what they did and that they represent depression, I was game to watch the whole series.

The fact that J.K. Rowling based the Dementors on depression is ABSOLUTELY AMAZINGLY BRILLIANT!!! I’ve battled with depression my entire life. Just about the time I barely started puberty, I felt this awful awful heaviness and horrible awful feeling come over me for no reason at all. I remember I went into my mothers bedroom to use the phone to make a call and this horrible feeling came over me. I had to sit on the edge of the bed and just sit there staring at the floor. I couldn’t understand what this awful ugly feeling was. What bothered me most is that there was no reason to feel this way but yet there it was. As the day progressed I felt worse and worse. And I’ve had to live with it every single minute, every single hour, every single day, every single week, every month, of every year ever since. I’m now in my early 50’s and it’s still there. Nothing makes it better. I wake up and there it is. Not even medication helps. And I’ve been on all of them. Prozac did absolutely nothing, and now I don’t even bother with meds. Meditation, eating healthy, exercise, nothing helps. Nothing fixes it. The dementors are my worst enemy. And although I can’t fully produce a Patronus, if I could, it would definitely be THANOS!!!!! He’s so big and super strong! He is so amazingly intelligent and brawny with both brain and the braun to squash them like little gnats!! Seriously though, I think J.K.Rowling was just amazing in her telling of her experience with depression. That’s EXACTLY what the depression (the Dementors) do; they suck out all the joy, all the fun, all the love, all the excitement, out of absolutely EVERYTHING. Absolutely all the happiness is completely sucked out and you’re just left with this awful feeling of emptiness and nothing and utter loneliness. It’s an AWFUL existence. I often tell ppl I live in Azkaban, because that’s how if feels......😓😓😓
