History of East Germany's MPI-KM & MPIS-M74 AK Variants

In this video, we take a look at another rifle of mine, which was assembled from an Arms of America parts kit. This time it is an East German (DDR) MPI-KM rifle; basically the German take on Russia's AKM. We use this look as a jumping off point to talk about AK production in former East Germany.
We cover the first MPI-K, then of course the MPI-KM, next move to the popular MPIS-M74, and end by talking a bit about the abortive STG.940 project (aka Wieger type).
This video is part of our on-going effort to document the histories of various Kalashnikov variants and versions from around the world.

If it says "made in Germany" it means "made with quality". From the 1930's to this present day the Germans continue to make some excellent firearms!

I was in East Berlin October 16,1990.Only a couple of weeks after re-unification.People in the East didn't know what was going to happen to them. The Russians had told them "We saved you from the West". When they went walking down the Ku Dam, They realized the big lie.I paid 5 cents for liter mugs of beer.$3 for strong schnapps. We met some Americans who directed us to a Soviet arsenal being run by some young Germans. They were having a garage sale. The Russians left thier equipment behind.East German made AK's for $5.Discounts for volume purchases.Ammo,grenades,RPG,etc..I knew US Customs wouldn't accept my hand written receipt from Hans and Franz. No Government people on site. These guys were very proud of DDR quality. If we wanted to test them,No problem.I wish I could have found a way to get them here legally.

Thanks Mish, your videos are always so interesting and knowledgeable. Today, I purchased my first AK the MPI-KM... found it collecting dust at a gun shop. The rilfe is basically unused and in its original form - unsanatized. It was a gift, brought into South Africa by a diplomat and therefore, he was able to liecence it as a civilian back in the day. I would imagine these rifles are extremely rare here in SA. Got it for ZAR R10400 (595USD). Happy days

The Wieger was intended for India and Peru in high numbers. When the wall fell the new reunited Germany and their intelligence agencies confiscated all remaining guns and blueprints and brought them to a secret place. This all came to daylight when 10 years ago a guy was in the act of buying the old factory and wanting to start production of the 940 again..there are a few pictures of bundeswehr soldiers in the late 90s early 2000s in which one soldiers holds a carbine version of this gun

Many of them were supplied to Croatia via Germany as they sided with the West during the Yugoslav Civil Wars. This is why they came out of the former Yugoslavia scrubbed by the Germans before they reached there for plausible deniability.

The compact East German AK-74 was called the MPi-AKS-74NK. It had the combo front sight gas block and actually had a 12.5" barrel and a full length gas tube. I don't think they actually made an 8" barrel "Krink" sized rifle. It was essentially an AK-105 variant and the E. Germans had their own AK-105 long before Russia did. Maybe thats where Russia got the idea for their 100 series carbines. Larry Vickers has a video where he shows and shoots one of these. It has a unique combo gas block front sight. He said he sent it to JMAC Customs so they could make a copy of it. It also had a unique flash hider. It is one of the coolest variants that I have ever seen honestly. Here's the link to the Vicker's Tactical video on this rifle. m.ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-lpPgg64PUbE.html

I picked up an East German parts kit through Apex. Im eventually going to build it, once I get through my 4 other AK projects. I did notice however the front trunnion is a bit oversized (I think it's a 3), and I don't have any barrels that would fit it. I'm going to have to knurl one of my barrel journals to make it fit, but Id rather not.

Hey Misha , Very specific question here but I remember seeing on one of your old AK videos you had a Slab Side in a Type 3 Milled AK. Now this slabside was interesting because the floor plate was not "Smooth" but rather had the dimples on it like later AK mags. Do you know anything about these mags? Where these floor plates replacements because old ones were lost? I have a slab side with later steel magazine internals and was just curious. I almost came to the conclusion that new parts were added in for stupid 922r restrictions.

Peru was the only country that receive the STG-941 prior to the downfall of the Berlin Wall. Around 2,000 rifles were delivered, out of a 10,000 rifles purchase order, along with the ammo, in 1989. The order was subsequently cancelled by the German Government in 1990. Surviving quantities of such weapons remained in warehouses until their destruction by the reunified German Government in 1992. Some weapons were spared from destruction; some donated to museums, and small numbers used by the Bundeswehr for training.

Hi Mishaco, I have a question I just came across a East German Ak like the one your showing. But one problem is there's NO serial numbers on the trunnion, dust cover, bolt, or charging handle! The receiver has a serial number & it says LEE ARMORY. I was told some German ak's were sent to Croatia & they Scrubbed off the serial numbers so they wouldn't know they came from Germany. IDK can you please help. They want $2500 for the AK
