You haven’t seen anything..he's born an Omega level mutant who has full control over kinetic energy even turn himself into a being made of kinetic energy..but that made him a threat to the planet itself..so he begged Sinister to nerf him (removed a brain tissue that allowed him to nuke biological matter)..the gambit you see in '97 is in nerfed state. There's a Gambit in alternate universe who fully embraced his powers called "New Sun"

I hope you are following his Comics. The had a new solo comics in 2022 by Chris Claremont. And he is going to be in the new UNCANNY XMEN TEAM that is gonna be on sale pretty soon. THE BEST way to show love to our favorite characters is to buy their comic books if you can.

He's Cajun

Gambit is from USA. He has born in USA. BUT It happens that in Luisiana, lives a group of people belonging to an ethnicity called "THE CAJUNS". They originally were a group of people from France, stablished on the border of Canada and USA(knowed like Acadia), that were forced to move to LUISIANA in the XVIII century after the British ocupation of their original establishment. The Cajuns are stablished in Luisiana and ARE DESCENDANTS OF SAID PEOPLE, BUT THEY ARE BORN IN AMERICA NOW, but they keep talking a mix of english with french expresions. SO GAMBIT IS A CAJUN, THAT MEANS HE IS AN AMERICAN whos ancestors were french.

Also, Sinister didnt manipulate Gambits DNA, to control his powers. What Sinister does is REMOVE A PORTION OF GAMBITS BRAIN to make his powers have a level that can be controled. This video didnt mention it but later on the comics, Gambit ask Sinister to "install" again, that portion of brain to have the full capacity of his powers. In said time his powers start to get so powerful that Gambit is worried about hurting his friends, because stuff around him start charging with only him being near or by looking at things, and also can desintegrated materia just with his powers. During this time he is also able to touch Rogue. But he ask to have his powers in full capacity to be able to fight against a Shady guy called "New Sun", who ended up being GAMBIT FROM ANOTHER DIMENSION, where he never got to have his powers surgically controled. This version of Gambit is Basically a "Dr. Manhattan" so is really powerful because he was raised in a lab(sold there by his parents) and start getting used to his huge powers since childhood with the help of the scientist. The New Sun is so powerful that due to his powers he has destroyed his earth and can travel trought realities, and he is traveling KILLING other versions of him, to prevent them from destroying their universes like he did. So he takes Gambit to another planet to fight with him, and there FINALLY WITHOUT THE FEAR OF LOSING CONTROL OF HIS POWERS AND DESTROY PEOPLE or places AROUND HIM, Gambit gets lose his powers at full capacity and fights the New Sun fiercely. Finally winning the fight out of raw skills and fighting with evil and dirt fighters in real life. Due to using his powers to his full capacity to win that fight, Gambit BURNS his powers and his power levels get back to normal level. Its never mentioned, but since his brains are complete again, he has the potencial inside him to have his powers at least in a higher level again, but THAT IS UP TO THE WRITERS sadly and they have just left the thing like an open posibility unexplored.
