The Greatsword is probably the greatest trap for a new player, they pick it up finding it cool, and it's so hard to play at first, especially without knowledge of the monsters, a few minutes later, give up on playing

It's actually a novice friendly weapon if you immediately starts to learn how to sheath it after being trampled by our large chicken instructor Yan Kut Ku a couple of times. When I first played 3G, I used to hate the great sword until a mentor of mine reminded me that I'm playing it completely wrong and should be sheathing it at all times and only draw it out when needed. The trick was utilize the hit and run tactic at all times. After getting the hang of the great sword, an entire new world opened up to me where I have the mobility to run freely around and mess with the monsters at will. It actually turned into one of my favorite weapons right after the switchaxe and I regularly use it as a main when I'm not so sure how to approach a new monster in new games.

Its super easy to learn. Its one of the most basic weapons in the game. Thats why I like it. Its just less forgiving with fuck ups. But I find it easier to learn body language than button combos so its a natural fit for me. The charge changed things up a lot but made it so much better. Later the shoulder bash made us basically invincible....at least thats how it feels. I have been using it from the beginning & didn't do any co-op until 3U. Ended up making me a pretty good player. One of the few games I can claim to be good at. It all flows together in a delightful smash, roll, sheath, smash dance that I cannot get enough of. I would later pick up the lance when teaching a friend how to play in 3U. Just to give me something to learn so he didn't feel carried. But the Greatsword remains the only weapon I can really use.

"new gen weapons like the Switch Axe" ... Tri is over 11 years old by now. T_T But I get what you mean. Come to think of it, it's rather funny to see Tri came out 5 years after MH1, but ever since then the gap between each generation became larger and larger. It took them 4 years from Tri to 4, and another 5 years from 4 to 5 (World). I don't say that's a bad thing, but it just shows how much stuff put into each newer generation. World released in 2018, 3 years ago, and now since Rise comes out, it will most-likely be 2 to 3 years until we see the sixth generation of MH.

idk if another comment has mentioned this, but overcharging is still a thing with the greatsword in Iceborne and RIse. It's most noticeable in rise as your weapon goes from the bright yellow glow to the orangish glow if you hold it too long. Loved watching my favorite weapon's evolution tho, pretty cool stuff! I can barely live without the tackle, let alone charging my swings lmao

Damn, seeing the GS from the PS2 game is bringing me the feels back. I consider it the first weapon I mained and I'm grateful for picking it up. Back in the original game, the only weapon you had available to you was the SnS, as opposed to having one of each weapon at your chest like in recent games, and I hated it back then, so as soon as I was able to craft a different kind of weapon, I went with the GS. It was rough adapting to it after using the quick SnS fro a while, but the satisfaction I got from each hit with it was great! I still remember the feeling I got after FINALLY killing that first Yian Kut-Ku from the Jungle, it was so good! The GS is still to this day the weapon I recommend the most to new players. With it, you can't just go hitting the monsters all willy nilly, you really need to "learn" the monster so that you can find a good opening and dish out some ridiculous damage. After you learn the GS, I guarantee you'll have a easier time using other weapons against any monster!

The one thing you forgot to mention involving the 'Tackle' from Gen 5 and in Rise, is its important ability to create a shortcut to the hunter's True Charge Slash. After the first initial slash and tackling, a hunter can then initiate the true charge. It was the one good shortcut until the slingerburst came along in the Iceborne expansion.

As a GS main, I used to think Hunting Edge was really useless because it was so difficult to aim. But I spent some time figuring out how to efficiently use it (find the right distance sheathed and facing the monster, then go into a guard to quickly unsheathe), and it became a way more gratifying move. If you land it, you can press ZR immediately to go into a charging downthrust which can go into a charged strong slash, which can then follow up into a true charge slash. It's actually a great combo starter in the right situation, if the monster staggers then the full combo is SO gratifying to nail. My only warning is that it does require 2 wirebugs, so it does leave you vulnerable if you whiff, but again that's the gamble we GS live by. :) It used to feel incredibly difficult to get into a mounting state compared to other weapons, but if you master Hunting Edge you can go into wyvern riding FAST.
@HerroVincey
@HerroVincey 3 года назад
Did some testing in training area, I want to add that timing the release of the downthrust charge is important, you want to charge to 3 levels when possible, but you get more damage when you can reliably get three hits off the downthrust. Also, you can choose a direction to leap towards after Hunting Edge strikes, which is very difficult but may come in handy if it connects anywhere other than the head, but ideally you want to aim it at the head at all times, it makes the setup for the rest of the combo a lot easier.

Amazing look at the history of the weapon! I think GS embodies 'easy to use hard to master'. I'll add a couple of things: - The armor from charging attacks protects you from tripping, small flinches and wind pressure up to a point. - The tackle animation has technically existed since Tri as it replaced the kick when underwater for all weapons. - The strong charge wasn't very useful at first due to the commitment required to use it, this changed with Gen and especially World where GS became more combo oriented. - World's TCS and tackle made GS' use revolve heavily around them, to such an extent Capcom had to buff the strong charge and later in Iceborne nerf/rework the TSC and buff the charged slash and strong charge. - GS' aerial attack was infamous in World for its high DPS (later nerfed in Iceborne) and its ability to mount monsters. - Iceborne slinger burst allowed for greater reorientation to land your TSC. Also no, you aren't alone. Hunting Edge is quite underwhelming.

Started playing MH1 just recently, and chose to make me a Greatsword. For Gen 1, its relative jank-less-ness (outside of the usual long animations of course) is making for a pretty painless run so far. Took a while to get enough mats to make it tho sense I've only found 2 mining spots in the first local so far and mining's way more random.

Just wanted to say that the only thing that changes the tackle from cancelling out of stronger charges is that it does more damage, and you forgot to mention it can inflict decent KO if done to the target's head. One of the best feeling with GS is punishing the monster for moving out of the way of your charge slash by making the monster flinch or outright KOing it after a perfect shoulder tackling to the head, then unleashing a TCS while it's panting or down in the dirt.

I think you are right that most people in the early days of Monster Hunter just saw a dude with a big ol‘ sword fighting a dragon on the cover and bought the game because of it. For me it was almost the same, but it was actually the back of the Game Package. The German cover of Freedom 1 had a picture of a hunter in Full Velocidrome Skin armor (The cosplay version, not the normal armor) wielding the Velocidrome Dual Blades on the back and for some reason that made me buy the game. @@notmbr Perhaps it's how different the build is compared to other weapons since I rather invest heavily on a few weapons with interchanceable skills if possible. Also, the lack of guard point or a counter compared to other weapons with a shield puts me a little off. Gunlance is really good at what it's supposed to do in MHGU/MHWI/Rise but with a shield at your disposal, I always wanted it to more interactive with it. I know SnS doesn't have any of that until Rise as well, it's mobility and shield bashing makes up for that. That said, I do like how you're just blasting away with the weapon and have no real concern for armored parts unless you wanna swinglance at lower sharpness. Wyvern's fire is one my favorite attacks in the game and the vanilla MHW swinglance meta was pretty fun too tho. Rise demo beefed it up with air shelling, guarding while Wyvern's fire is up and the new silkbind attacks. Gunlance is one of those weapons I do like but don't want to invest/main in. Same goes for DB, I like it but not gonna use it by myself much. Come to think of it, I don't really have any weapon in MH that I really despise, it's just not my preferred weapon of choice.

Never got a feel for it until then and now I absolutely love it, hopped into the Rise Demo with it and might stick with it at the start. Love the video!

This was the first weapon I truly mastered back on Monster Hunter. I started with the SnS but it didn't click with me, then I saw the option to make dual blades (Being new to the game I called them 'Dual Swords' despite not all of them being swords so from time to time I'll call it DS instead of DB). I just wasn't able to hunt as well without a block... then I picked up the Great Sword (which was another reason for my mistake on DB because not all the GS were swords [Frozen Tuna ftw XD ]) and then began my hunter career. Gen 2 I went between it and LS, as my play style began to be more geared towards mobility. I'd still use GS when I needed that block or the newly introduced charge mechanic and faithfully upgraded both (and playing around with the new Gunlance and Bow introduced then as well). I skipped Gen 3 and returned in Gen 4, with the IG and CB introduced, I left the GS as it was just too slow for me... but I couldn't leave it completely. A part of my heart is forever in that blade that first got me through hunting. Come MHGen, I played Striker GS and that was enjoyable, it wasn't until GenU (I skipped Worlds and have no regret in doing so) when I picked up Valor GS and it was like seeing a long lost friend again. Valor GS gave it mobility, thus adding it back to my arsenal it felt great to welcome it back aboard: Main weapons: LS, DB, IG Side weapons: GS, GL, CB A few things you missed, two really. Gen 1: MH on PS2 may have had that right analog thing, but when it got ported to PsP, it used the button scheme that later got put into MHF2. First Gen, since it had no charge it had the walking combo (Triangle/Circle) and the stationary combo (Triangle + Circle/ Circle), the latter was good at downed monsters. Rise Demo: The silkbind move that puts you into the air gives you an air quick charged slash I would love to see a history on the Dual Blades, the first weapon to split off from another (In the first gen, it split off from SnS).

I remember picking up a great sword and hating it but when you master this weapon, the damage and lockdowns on certain monsters is amazing. Playing Rise with GS and soloing means that when the monster is exhausted you can some times basically stun lock a monster for like a minute or 2 of straight lvl3 charges also getting KOs with the tackle is always hilarious. Also punish draw memes in older gens was fun as fuck

@@SuperRADLemon Actually it's the other way round. The launch (forward charge) has higher damage than the standard one but is harder to hit. Edit: just checked the MVs to be sure: the forward charge has the same motion values for charge level 0, 1 and 2 as the draw and normal charge but slightly more on level 3. And I do mean slightly, it only has 3 MV more. lol

Great Sword made me buy Monster Hunter Tri, my first MH game. I read in a magazine a very earnest review of Tri and in the screenshots I could see the GS in action. The review said that the game felt heavy just like the weapons look but that each hit is rewarding and satisfying as the fights are hard. Being a fan of FFVII I thought to myself "why not use the BIG BIG sword and fight dragons?" I fell in love with the series. I mained GS and Lance in Tri, then HH since 3U.

I don't see the hunting edge silkbind move as one to deal a ton of damage cause your grounded combos will do that well. I mainly see this move (and the switch axe's gambit silkbind) as a way for these weapons with lower mobility to close the gap on a monster that's a bit further from you without having to sheath your weapon

Great vid! I started in 3U as a GS main and skipped straight to world and then rise, so it’s interesting to see how the weapon evolved. 2 small changes that were made from world to rise that weren’t mentioned: In world, the side blow could only combo into the regular charge slash. Which is strictly a downgrade. I guess they just really wanted people to tackle? Idk, capcom seemed like they wanted to punish players who weren’t just going straight for TCS. This was changed in rise, and you can now side blow into strong charge slash again, which is nice for getting a little extra distance from a short tackle. Also, in world, the strong wide slash combos back into a strong charge slash, but in rise, the strong wide slash now combos into true charge slash (or rage slash if you’re using that). This actually makes wirebug -> plunging thrust -> strong wide slash pretty safe if you have rage slash, since you can have hyper armor right after. These are pretty minor things that I appreciated a lot in rise since imo, it makes the weapon play more smoothly. TCS spamming was fun but I much prefer having more flexible options, and more paths to The Big Chop. P.S. I could be mistaken about one of these since it’s been awhile since I played world, but feel free to correct me or add on!
