National treasure: The Indus river dolphin (Platanista indicus minor) are a rare species of River Dolphins naturally inhabited only of the fresh waters within Pakistan proper. It is only found in the Indus River and it is very different from that of the Ganges river dolphin. The Indus River (National river of Pakistan) harbours the rare species of nearly blind dolphin, this Indus Dolphin is a "Living Fossil" that has not shared a common ancestor with any other living creature for around 25 million years. The dolphin lacks eye lenses and the eye openings are no bigger than a pinhole. As a result, these rely almost entirely on Echolocation to forage for food and navigate in the murky river waters of the Indus Valley. The Indus Dolphin has a long beak, a small, low hump, wide flippers and an adult can weigh 70-90 kg. They are slow swimmers, but can move in rapid spurts. They breathe through their slit - like blowholes with a loud sound that is similar to a sneeze, and can be heard from quite a distance." It sometimes carries its young on its back, above the surface of the water. These are found in a localised 100 mile stretch between the Sukkur and Guddu Barrages of the Indus River. The dolphin, also known as Indus Susu, is one of the five species of Cetaceans that are threatened with extinction, and these animals are currently endangered species, mainly because of water pollution in the country. Environmental impact of the world's largest irrigation system; Reduced river flow: a) Reduced fishing opportunities. The Indus River in Pakistan faces scarcity due to over-extraction of water for agriculture. The Indus is inhabited by 25 amphibian species and 147 fish species of which 22 are found nowhere else in the world. It harbours the endangered Indus River dolphin, one of the world’s rarest mammals. Fish populations, the main source of protein and overall life support systems for many communities, are also being threatened! b) In the Indus Valley Plains of Pakistan, more than 2 million hectares of Indus Land is waterlogged. The soil of 13.6 million hectares within the Gross Command Area was surveyed, which revealed that 3.1 million hectares (23%) was saline. 23% of this was in Sindh and 13% in the Punjab. More than 3 million ha of water-logged lands have been provided with tube-wells and drains at the cost of billions of rupees, but the reclamation objectives were only partially achieved. The Asian Development Bank (ADB) states that 38% of the irrigated area is now waterlogged and 14% of the surface is too saline for use Presently no more than 500 animals remaining within Pakistan, and unfortunately is decreasing day by day. The Indus dolphin has been a victim of both deliberate and accidental exploitation. The Pakistan Adventure Foundation, a project funded by the UNO Development Programme, is trying to create awareness about the endangered blind dolphin through rafting expeditions and visiting riverside fishing communities. It is Pakistan's National Aquatic Marine Animal. Locally it is called Bhulan.
