Remember Siri being introduced by Apple on stage alongside the iPhone 4s? It was an incredible moment that impressed not only the audience but also tech critics like Walt Mossberg who called Siri a standout feature of the iPhone 4s. But Siri didn’t evolve as quickly as most expected and now the same people who were praising Siri back in 2011 are now asking why Siri seems so dumb! What went wrong with Siri and how did it fall so far behind its competition? Well the answer can be found in examining the path Siri has been on since its development back in 2005.

Siri's only really problems are the following: 1. her lack of ability to remember context or chains of queries. like, she struggles with follow-up questions. 2. she doesn't always/usually respond with voice feedback when asking a query, for example, you can ask Siri something and she wont respond vocally, just a here is what I found: followed by a link or article etc. if apple can get those two things going, there is nothing more Siri really needs to do. Everything else is fine.
@samferr16
@samferr16 5 лет назад
Actually she can do follow-up questions very well. "Who is Donald Trump?" "How old is he?" "Who is he married to?" "Does he have children?". That's just one example.

you're right, now you know why Mark Z is confused at the court, It's like debating how the phone works with an ape. Fanboy is a fanboy. iCloud Fappening leak? nice privacy. If people could just do a little research on Machine Learning, this video won't be necessary. WHY WOULD GOOGLE SENT INFO TO AD? fucking dumb, it's now how it works, it's called suggestion based on your routine on the web. It's a win-win without sharing any info. YOU WIN because you get a suggestion like "maybe, this is what you want???" (SUGGESTING A GOOGLE ADS CLIENT) it's NOT like Google tell the ad "psst this guy wants to buy some dildo for his daddy, you sell some sex toy right? you want to appear on his screen??". Google just connect people and the ad.

Great video 🙂 I use Siri regularly. I have always used it to get things done. I am not one to ask it all that many general knowledge type questions. Make calls, send messages in different apps, set reminders, make lists, schedule and check on events in my calendar, check if I have any new emails, "what's the whether like tomorrow?", control Apple Music, and making currency and measurement conversions - that is what I use Siri for. It does a remarkable job at that. Then, when it comes to the other stuff, it has gotten better at that too. A couple of months ago, Apple started using Google again for Siri and Search. It has massively improved Siri's ability to find a lot of the useless trivia I've asked it. I respect Apple's focus on privacy and thank them for it.

For me, Siri far surpasses the 'useful threshold' while retaining privacy. I've always loved its focus on on-device tasks rather than answers from online sources. It's just so much easier and faster to use Siri for calling someone, setting timers or reminders, or playing songs. And it did this in 2011, the rest was kind of extra.

The privacy information you stated is very skewed so much so that some of it is essentially false. Google does indeed collect voice data for improvements in recognition and suggested features. However, Apple may not store voice data but they most likely do store the queries, every query is sent to Apple's servers and processed there which is why Siri requires an internet connection. Apple's lack of innovation is not due to its lack of data collection, Apple are simply focusing elsewhere. Google for the record, give full control over storing voice data, all of it can be viewed on the myaccount site and can even be disabled if the user chooses.
@terane_irl
@terane_irl 6 лет назад
Blazzike that’s if you’re a techie. My aunt has no idea her data is being recorded so naturally she would go digging into her account setting to turn something off she’s not aware of. Google needs to state this explicitly when setting up the device.

You know, everything virtual assistant requires internet. You need it to pull up web pages or to do anything else internet related. Even though some other virtual assistants may not need an internet connection, they won't have as many features. Apple may collect data that requires internet, but VA's just need internet to be good.

I’ve never got what do other assistants do that Siri can’t?... I mean she always do whatever I want from her without problems and I can’t think of anything else I would need digital assistant to do for me?!?... So I’m just curious what do people use for example google assistant for that Siri won’t be able to do?...

I only use siri for three things, setting timer, so i would not forget to take out beer from freezer, setting WC lights at exactly 2% brightness at night when i go to take #2, turning on coffee machine before i fall out the bed in the morning, and turning on AC before coming back from work.. damn, i guess that's four things.. maybe i should try using siri for math lessons too....

I mostly use Siri for the HomePod when listening to music. Most of the time it's an okay experience, but sometimes Siri can be incredibly dumb. Sometimes I will ask her to play a song and she will act like the song does not exist, only for me to manually search the song on Apple Music and it be right there. Other times she will play remixes of a song or a live version, when I want to hear the original version, and I can't get her to play the original. Then there's some songs that use a character like ?!@# in the title that I can't possibly verbalize, and there's no way of knowing what the verbal cue would be to tell Siri to play that particular song or album, so I always have to do it manually for those albums or songs. Things like that might sound minor, but they really do disrupt the flow of easily laying back and listening to music when I end up having to dig my phone up after struggling to get Siri to play the song or album I want. I don't expect Siri to be a Trivial Pursuit machine, but she's advertised as a musicologist by Apple themselves, so I expect her to at least know a Billboard charting song exists.
@matthewpenrod4371
@matthewpenrod4371 5 лет назад
"We didn't design Siri to be trivial pursuit" yeah and I am sure Google didn't design Google Assistant to be either, but it still kicks Siri's ass in almost if not all areas of what a virtual assistant can do AND it's funny...

I switched to IOS in July of 2017. I enjoy Siri and it is very helpful! Setting calendar entry’s, setting location and time based reminders have helped me remember things I used to forget all the time. I have enjoyed Siri both on my Apple Watch series 2 and my iPhone SE!

I use Siri about once a day. It’s a nice feature to have. The new shortcuts app is exceptional and I can now personally program Siri to do things I need it to do that she doesn’t normally do. I enjoy Siri as a feature and am glad apple still cares about it.

What I’ve noticed when switching back to Apple after several years with android and a few of them with Google Assistant is this: I was often annoyed that Google Assistant, as much as I like it, failed to understand what I wanted when I was gonna send someone a WhatsApp message while navigation was on. You know, while I am driving I don’t want to even hold my phone. Since I’ve heard how bad Siri was supposed to be in comparison I did not expect it to work so flawlessly when I did the same thing on my new iPhone. And also the way Siri uses context is much better. Like when I asked Google Assistant what’s the weather gonna be like today and my next question is “how about tomorrow”, it won’t know what I’m talking about.

I use Siri every day for making calls, sending texts, setting alarms, and sometimes changing settings, and listening to music. It works really well. I would say better than Alexa. I only use it for accomplishing tasks, not for answering trivia questions or anything like that though.

Reminders, calendar events, alarms, timers, starting music, texting people quickly and quick math are very fast and easy with Siri on iOS 13. For certain things the response is almost instantaneous. Google assistant is good at those things too but I find Siri to be more reliable at doing it faster than I could’ve done on my own

If Siri had a button that, if I pushed it, it’d send the question to Apple for consideration, I’d appreciate that. For example, just in the last few days I’ve asked Siri which year certain apple products were released, and it simply said “everything you need to know about apple products is on our website”, and getting the runtime of a film was something of a pain, with me needing to rephrase the question. Neither Google Assistant or Siri is superior to where Cortana was a good few years ago. Apple isn’t the only dev that’s stagnated.

It's always easier to start a task with my thumbs than to formulate how Siri would like me to ask it. And while driving, forget it. It's too noisy to give voice commands. I just hold my thoughts until I can park.
