The T-54 and T-55 are direct descendants of the T-34 and T-44, and was mass produced only a few short years after the conclusion of WWII. Despite their age, the T-54 and T-55 have seen massive upgrades over the years that have kept them in operation with many countries, even to this day. Some speculate that this vehicle is so cheap and effective that it may even serve well beyond the heat death of the universe.

I think only the Centurion can even come close to competing with the T-54/T-55s in terms of how many wars they have fought in. Mental how much mileage they get out of these machines.

There is actually a well developed T-55 tank still in service as main tank. TR-85M1 Bizonul, Romania’s main battle tank. It has some interesting changes made but at the base of the tank it’s still quite a T-55

It may not be much against modern tanks but against everything else it still supports the infantry. A 100mm main gun will still mess up fortifications, technicals, lightly armored AFVs like APCs and Armored Cars, exposed infantry without anti tank or friendly armor, etc.

Only really the Chinese and the Egyptians used the AK-47 for any significant period of time. The Russians and everybody else used the AKM as soon as they could start stamping receivers.

In Ukraine for example, they ran out of 100mm howitzers. All the cannons are worn out/destroyed. But Russia got over 100k 100mm shells from Iran, and those coincidentally fit into the D10 Cannon. So they sent the T55s to Ukraine as SPAA pieces for indirect fire, and give them to DNR/LNR troops as "frontline vehicles" or rather morale boosters, since they are absolute death traps on a modern battlefied. But as a mobile cannon that shoots a few rounds in a genera direction, maybe hit a village or two, and then relocate before it can be counterbatteried, it is still viable. And for warlords in Africa it is the good old "Some tank is better than no tank" situation. And they are cheap. Go for less than 200k these days (well before the Ukraine War, I doubt Russia still sells them now).

Apparently, in China there is a factory that has the capability of developing and building ZTZ59 tanks with the freaking 120mm from the Abrams and Leopard 2s. Supposedly no country has made an offer for them and as such they haven't been built yet, but the fact that it can upgraded with the most modern tank gun in current production is a true example of how efficient and long lasting the T-55 platform is.

Updating T-55 is similar to what soviets did. Take same tank, upgrade, repeat when outdated. And that how you come to T-90.

Thing is, they're not going up against tanks, they're being sent to artillery units as guess this, self propelled artillery. They're still worse at that role than a proper artillery system but nowhere near useless.

T--55s are like the Dreadnoughts of the 40k universe. Charging hopelessly into the Ukrainian fray with an untrained crew, about to be torn apart like a tin can against Javelins, TOW-missiles. Leopards and other tanks & weapons: *"Even in death, I STILL SERVE!"*

The T-55s are used for indirect fire/ infantry support by artillery and not for direct tank Duels. Btw, an Abrams or Leopard 2 would be as fucked as any other tank by top-down-attack ATGMs
