The T-55 medium tank is a further development of the T-54B. It has some improvements over its predecessor that are hard to notice externally, but these improvements made the tank more efficient and lethal. The T-55 was officially accepted to service with the Soviet Army in 1958. Its production commenced during the same year. This tank was license-produced in China, Czechoslovakia and Poland. It is estimated that around 70 000 T-54 and T-55 tanks were produced in the Soviet Union, Czechoslovakia and Poland. This figure does not include tanks produced in China. Since its introduction the T-55 has seen combat in more than 20 wars. Despite its age this medium tank is still used by about 50 countries around the world.
Both the T-54 and T-55 were heavily influenced by the Soviet experience gained during the WW2. The T-55 was the first Soviet tank, fitted with an efficient NBC protection system. At the time it was the only tank in the world, capable of fighting after a nearby nuclear explosion.
This tank has a weldes steel armor hull and a cast turret. Front of the hull has a 60° inclination angle. This tank is also fitted with automatic fire suppression system, that was a novelty at that time. The T-55 can launch its smoke screen by injecting diesel fuel into exhaust.
The T-55 is fitted with a fully-stabilized 100-mm gun. It can fire accurately on the move. At a speed of 12 km/h the tank has a first round hit probability of about 60%. A total of 43 rounds are carried. The previous T-54 carries only 34 rounds.
On initial production tanks the roof-mounted 12.7-mm machine gun of the T-54 was removed, because it was ineffective against jet aircraft. In the late 1950s combat helicopters were still under development. The 12.7-mm machine gun was fitted back only in 1970.
This tank is operated by a crew of four, including commander, gunner, loader and driver.
This tank is powered by a V-55 diesel engine, developing 520 hp. It replaced the less powerful and unreliable V-45 engine of the T-54. Maximum road speed is about 50 km/h. Cross-country speed is about 25 km/h. Maximum range on fuel, including external tanks, is up to 530 km. The T-55 can be fitted with a deep wading kit and ford water obstacles up to 5 m deep.
Since its introduction the T-55 was constantly upgraded. Various countries offer a number of upgrade programmes for this ageing tank. However even updated T-55 tanks are no match for modern MBTs.

The T-72 is being more prevalent in Africa and other nations who used the T-54/55. Though the T-54/55 can be upgraded to probably... 2nd generation MBT standards. It would never hold its own against even the earliest M1 variants with the 105mm.

when ur defending u can dig in and making the vehicle so small reduces its weight. for example leopard 1 is 40 tons while t55 is 36 tons while having much better armor

When you are building a tank design made for attack, gun depression isn't that much of a concern, because you pick where to strike.

@@shockwave6213 you still have to fully expose the tank in order to fire if the terrain sin't urbanised. other tanks with good depression can hide their chasis behind a hill with only their turret sticking out. exposing yourselfs is bad in both an attacking and defending situation.

@@shockwave6213 That's not really the reason. The primary reason is because of the lack of hills in Eastern Europe. If you're fighting on flat ground, gun depression is unnecessary. It can be seen in a lot of Soviet tank design, pre and post WW2.

TedShatner10 they are actually used to it's full potential and sometimes beyond it's capability, it's a World War II technology that are kept it in service that somehow works. You can't use it against modern tanks or anti-tank weapons and even modern auto cannon shells, but it can stop modern machine gun and rifles bullets. And Syrian Army was able to use it to beat ISIS, that says a lot.

As far as I understand it's mainly used as a SPG these days due do it's cannon still having use against structures and fortifications. It's why you often see images of a guy with the firing lanyard outside the turret firing the gun. This also makes more space for the loader and gunner. Edit: sorry ACTUALLY that's the Ripcord T-34s being used by Huthis in Yemen.

I love The Beast! The tank in the film was a Ti-67, a T-55 captured by Israel and modified with a Detroit Diesel engine with an American made transmission and new controls for the driver. It also got a 105mm L7 gun and Browning M1919 coaxial machine gun with a digital fire control system, and other modern (at the time) optics for the tank commander. It's really a rather interesting upgrade.

The Stoned Videogame Nerd Close. They took old Sherman tanks and replaced the medium velocity 75mm gun with a French-made copy of the Panther's high velocity L/70 gun, and later a French-made 105mm gun. Both tanks also got a Cummins diesel engine to replace the more flammable gasoline engine (something the crews greatly appreciated). They were the M50 (high velocity 75mm gun) and M51 (105mm gun) Isherman respectively.

It wasn't captured by Israel.. It was captured by the Afghans..Then sold to Israel. As Soldier Of Fortune was selling Soviet Tanks, Helicopters anything they could get their hands on. To raise money for the Afghan army..I seen them sell Hind Helicopter missile launchers in Houston. At a Fund raiser. It was like the Wild West for arms dealers....

It was was to keep a low profile but also with the complex curves, *curve from bottom up, and round as well* increase the chance of a shot glancing off it the armor "slopes in 3 dimentions, not just 2D en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sloped_armour . Versus the all but last slab sided WW2 types.

If you look at the T-54 turret you can see how it's like a squashed T-34 turret, and then how the T-55 turret was developed to eliminate the shot-traps, making it bowl-shaped.

+Chewbacca The turret itself, once you strip away the outer modules, is stretched hexagonal on the T-90. That is a departure from the squashed cylindrical on the T-64, T-72 and T-80 series, and further yet away from the half egg / dome shape of the T-55 and T-62.

It's based on experience in WW2, the soviets found this design to be the best, the Americans also borrowed the idea and tried it on the M48(they made it a lot taller tho). I suspect the reason this kind of design got abandoned is because it is hard to make composite armor into the shape, but that's just a guess I dunno.

People love comparing this thing to modern Abrams tank because of the Iraq war but what they forget is this thing is cold war era technology and easily outclassed it's direct competitor, the M46 patton.

US Army Armor (tank) officer 1986 - 2012 trained on M1 series tanks. Deployed to Afghanistan in 2008/09 as an advisor to the Afghan National Army (ANA). I was the senior advisor to the 3rd Kandak (battalion) 3rd Brigade, 201st Corp which was a tank unit. The ANA sure did have T-55's in active service in two of the three companies. The third company was T-62 while the fourth was infantry. We ordered head gaskets from a company in Czechoslovakia. T-55's had a compressed air starter but with a manual transmission could be started by towing them and popping the clutch. For a counter insurgency these tanks were perfect to set up vehicle checkpoints (VCP) and to take out machine gun emplacements inside caves and also as a show of force.

Finland retired most of their fleet of T-54/55's in early 2000's and either scrapped them or sold them away. Few remain in service for use as OPFOR vehicles for training. One curiosity we used to have was Marksman turrets on T-55M hulls. They were designated ItPsv 90 and they looked wicked cool! Couple years ago FDF moved Marksman turrets on Leo 2 hulls which looks kinda neat too.

From Romania to Ukraine and other nations and the western nations modifications made to some T series tanks that fell into their use. Truly the T series tanks are the Ak series if the tank world.

The T-55 does have an NBC protection system, the t-54 however does not. Some of these T-54's were later converted to T-55 standard

a little fun factoid here: in 1979 Gaddafi planned to send 10 T-55s to Uganda, but Uganda lost the war while the tanks were en route, so they were redirected to Angola. But that ship docked in Durban instead. South Africa confiscated the tanks, and gave eight to Rhodesia. :P It made sense for South Africa to keep two for evaluation purposes - Cubans had T-55/62s in Angola later in 1980s.

You didn't mention that at least 1/4 of the T54/55 in the world are actually the Chinese type 59. Soviet sold the T 54 production line to China in the late 50s. Lots of the Iraqi T55s that got destroyed during desert storm are actually imported from China. Some of the type 59s are still in service today. Most of them are equipped with reactivate explosive armor and Chinese copy of L 7 105mm gun.

I worked with these tanks a long time ago. The biggest improvement of later Soviet Tanks, particularly the T-72, in my opinion is the situational awareness of the gunner. You can't see shit inside that turret.

Incredible balance of firepower, protection and mobility. The fact a tank that was on the drawing board when they were still fighting panzers is still somewhat relevant today (when upgraded) is an amazing testament to the engineers who designed this beast.

I dont really understand all that much about tanks (except they are cool obviously), but i remember talking years ago with friend who i think served as gunner of T-55 here in Finland. They had just gotten the first Leopards to Finland which were supposed to replace those T-55's. He claimed me that they had lots of problems with the Leopards engines, while the T-55 would basically run on small rocks and leftover porridge. I hope the leopards issues have been solved since then, but i really do have to admire the brutal practicality and reliability that many soviet hardware had - sure they would uncomfortable, break apart time and again... but somehow you could pretty much always fix them with duct tape and iron wire whether it was tank, car, assault rifle or whatever.

T54/55 more like "pick up and fire" kind of Tank, it is low tech, doesn't have state of the art equipment, but it so easy to use, untrained soldiers doesn't need to read thousand pages of manual book to operate them, just jump in, turn the engine on, and start "tanking" or go straight to the battlefield.

i knew, but T54/55 are not sophisticated "electronic combat warfare" like M1A2 SEP Abrams, Leopard 2 Revolution, or Challenger II tanks. Except radio equipment and thermal sight, everything are just "as manual as 1950's technology", unless the operator upgrade that tank with modern equipment like ERA protection, digital combat system (DCS module), SHTORA (anti missile defense system), ARENA protection system, etch.

That's all right. The same principle applies to the T-34. Then they need to put an ordinary rural tractor driver inside the tank and he must go right away. Repair in an open field on their own was also taken into account by Russian engineers. This is no longer the case today. Solid computers and electronics inside.

I think when you are in a poor country and dont expect the enemy to have tanks or many AT weapons such a tank will be a pain in the ass to fight and truely frightening to encounter. for excample in africa, what would you do when the enemy warlord gets hit hands on a T-55? correct, you have most likely no Anti tank weapons at hand and get slaughtered by this tank.

now go on and do the math, number of RPGs / surface area of the country = amount of RPGs per surface area. I bet that this number is verry low, meaning that having multiple RPG rockets on hand is not verry likely. infact, even in somalia a group of warriors usually has just 1 RPG. wich is VERRY limited to kill tanks and to risky.

Yes, but the chance of having a set number of RPGs per amount of area is also very low. Believe it or not, but when a war is fought, most of the troops, and as such RPGs are on the front line.

my dad likes your channel. too bad he refuses to get internet service again. hes in a place with only one option, and he refuses to get ripped off by them again. he had lower speeds than i have, and paid the same ammount. hes in a city of 5000 people, im in a sitty of 230,000. he said this brought back memories of his education of enemy tanks in the mid 70's. he remembered crawling all over the T-55, and comparing it to the M60a.

New sub here . I recently binged on your excellent videos and re-learned one thing , "NEVER UNDERESTIMATE AN OPPONENT AND THEIR CAPABILITY " . This being said from an former M1-a1 crewman and cav scout soon after ... Admittedly the older Soviet tanks are dated by todays standards but hell , these days there is no telling what is in support of them or what tactics will be used . Sorry for rant , just respect for warriors that wear different uniforms .

We had 3 of these tanks in 1978 at the Armor Engineer board at Fort Knox , we pitted them against the M-1 during the testing of the both the G.M and Chrysler versions.

Even today a tank like this is better than not having a tank at all; however, as every armored force has learned a tank is a big target unless you use proper combined force tactics and strategy. Air, armor, artillery, and infantry have to work together to make each individual component succeed. Having a large formation of any tank even modern tanks just makes you a target for enemy aircraft, artillery, and anti tank infantry unless you have a proper counter for each.

If your dealing with an insurgency and your biggest threats are RPG7 ,PKMs and IEDs just one of these would be incredibly useful,great for morale and well within the capability of a third world army to maintain.

I went inside of an old T-54/55 tank at Ft.Irwin California back in 1999 at their armor museum. The tank is very basic. I went inside the gunner's station and the sights were like using an SVD Dragunov rifle scope or an RPG-7 sight. It had a height basic range finder on the left and aiming points with a vertical center line and stadia lines for off set aiming for when a target is moving left or right. It was like using the GAS (Gunner's Auxiliary Sight) on the M1A1 when all power to the GPS (Gunner's Primary Sight) is down. The tank is basically upgraded WWII or 1950s technology. The T-54/55 tank would have been used well in static defense not on a fire on the move for combat because of it's sights. I am sure there are different models out there that were upgraded with better stabilization and fire control similar to the 1980s version of the M-60A1 with thermal imaging systems. Honestly the tank is very small and my Leprechaun ass size at 5,6 feet and 160 pounds is too big to fit in the gunner's station and driver's hole. The loader had to be even smaller and stronger to load the 100mm round,the TC had slightly more room than all the crew because he had to command the tank and operate the radios and sights.

"The Beast of War" is an excellent movie, I'm glad you gave it a plug. All the outside shots were of a T-55, but the internal shots are far too roomy to be that. Big deal. I can't believe how reliable and durable these tanks are, they "maintained" often under appalling conditions in the toughest environments imaginable and they just last and last. The amount of oil smoke they belch out would indicate that the engine's fcked but that's not the case because they seem to keep going...

Pretty sure the 20 pounder firing Sabot would be able to deal with their armour. We're talking 280mm of penetration there I believe. But of course no HESH, like the L7, which really loves those russian tanks with sloped armour and no spall-liners

Thanks for a a EX clip as usual. One thing I react on here is how incredible fast new going (mostly) found it's way to the frontline version. I guess the Ww2 Germans excelled at this because of lack of heavy materials and great ingenuity.

T54 too. At least one T54 in Hungary Revolution 1956 was driven to the british embassy. This leads to the development of the Royal Ordnance L7 after the T 54 was inspected.

They also had problems with engine fumes finding their way inside the poorly ventilated interior. Lots of people passed out or died from the fumes. That was improved upon in the upgrades though.

In Squad, we drove a T-62 recently against the British - we poped 2 Warriors and a lot of infantry, but couldn't take down the Challenger... :D The Challenger crew was prone to panic, trough, so we forced it to retreat 2 times after taking 1-2 hits from us - he was fine, just sort of smoking and scared and couldn't see us...

The film was shot in Israel. Several actual T-55 tanks were used in the film although the helicopter used in the film was not a real Mi-8, but an Aerospatiale SA.321 Super Frelon. The tank in question in the movie is actually an Israeli modification of a Soviet T-55 captured by the Israelis from the Arab armies, redesignated as the Ti-67 and fitted with a 105mm main gun in place of the original 100mm gun, leading some to mistake it for a T-62. Many of these conversions were used by the Israelis during the 1973 Yom Kippur War. The film's military advisor, Dale Dye, has written that he negotiated the purchase of the tanks over drinks with Israel Defense Forces officers in a Tel Aviv hotel.[2] The language spoken by the Afghan characters is Pashto. The Pashto dialogue is subtitled but some television screenings have omitted the subtitles.[citation needed]

Being quite a bit older than you (59), these were the Soviet tanks I feared as a kid. These tanks were th boogie men tanks that were going to come flooding out of the Soviet Union into Europe starting WWIII. Thankfully, that never happened. I love seeing info and movies on these older tanks to learn more about them. I would be interested in comparison videos of tanks on opposing sides at the various times. Be them German vs English. German Vs American. Soviet vs American. Soviet vs English. Soviet vs German. How they stacked up to each other. Including crew comfort/surviability etc. Thanks for the great video.

You don't need anything better if you are mostly dealing with pick-ups, obsolete APCs or infantry equipped with light weapons. Ability to shoot HE-FRAGs, protection from light weapons fire and some FEAR factor is all you need.. many countries still operate these tanks as standard army equipment using them basically as mobile artillery supporting infantry and light vehicles. Btw. that 100mm cannon still can disable any modern tank..

That 100mm gun is impotent against modern tanks. T55s are largely worthless against trucks, especially Toyota’s. Chad repelled the Libyan army in the 80s.

I saw these destroyed by 25mm AFSDS in the 1st Gulf War. They are of extremely limited use open conventional warfare. However, there are tens of thousands of them them in inventory. Where they can shine is as an Infantry fire support vehicle in dense terrain (urban or jungle). They are rugged, cheap enough, and plentiful enough to assign 1 tank per platoon or even squad. Just weld on a bustle rack for Infantry Reactive Armor (the Infantry react when the Armor takes fire).

A great tank. However, the SADF in Angola made mince meat of it with a way weaker Ratel 90. The Ratels had to shoot 3 rounds before getting through the armour. At Cuito Canavale 94 of these T54 & T55 we shot vs 3 SADF tanks

WWII was the daddy of this tank. It was all about the Soviet doctrine of building cheap, reliable, light and fast tanks that overwhelm the enemy with mobility and numbers and are particularly suited for open terrain of Russia. It came at expensive of crew protection and advanced features, but in an all-out war to protect Russia, it was utilizing Russian advantages to the fullest - massive industrial production and large population - i.e. they can take a lot of casualties and still produce superior numbers.

My father was the best in his regiment at guiding the rockets using the hyper-sensitive 1 cm wide joystick which was used to direct the TOW rocket which he said: "...almost hit the ground when fired." I can only imagine how that felt every time he fired it in training and in the war games in Siberia. The old soldiers were his best friends at base, he would cook for them and play guitar and recite poetry and drink with them, avoiding the live fire training as much as possible because he was a very religious pacifist who people thought was a reincarnation of Jesus, the Catholic church even giving him a medal (after the following happened), he eventually deserted the army *in Siberia* as the Union was about to collapse and went to Ukraina and then Hungaria where he took a plane to Israel where he lived some time before he moved to NYC where met my mother who had fled the collapsing Bulgarian communist regime a few years later, or earlier...pretty sure it was later. He fondly recalled the Mil-24's dumping their rockets down range at the war games "...sending trees flying 150 meters" while emptying their cannisters, I will never forget him imitating the sound, "sssshhhhhwwwwwaaaaaa". Oh and the screaming Katyushas, "creating fields" lol. I think I am recalling all of that correctly. It may have been the T-62 _> because he fondly recalled an IFV crew forgetting he was on top of it and they went on a trip through the backroads of the central Siberian taiga, "...with huge speed...if I had fallen off, I would have died...", all the while he was banging on the hatch he was latched on to and yelling "Oi, stop, I'm up here you motherf***ers", "You sons of bitches, you know" I recall him saying, and I think we figured out it was a BTR 8 wheeler, and I think those were around a bit after the T-54/55 were standard, it came up because he saw one send me to capitalist heaven while I was playing Bad Company 2 I think. Oh well, great video as always :)

Yeah lots of variants indeed. Some upgraded variants take this old vehicle to the next level like the T-55AGM package by Ukraine or the Type-59BD/G used by Bangladesh, which is an upgrade of the Type 59 variant that adds 125mm main gun in a new turret similar to Type 96 and more such as armor protection, ERA etc. This, the Ak 47 and the Mig 21 are legendary for long service due to reliability.
