Our first week back behind the wheel of a new vehicle in some time, we're looking at the history of Jeep's Cherokee nameplate and the legacy of their compact SUVs.

The Jeep Cherokee is one of the most iconic American off-roaders of all-time. Launched in 1974 under American Motors ownership, the Jeep Cherokee served as a two-door full-size SUV built on a body-on-frame chassis with RWD/4WD prowess. Few examples exist today that are worthy of display, but we're lucky FCA North America has produced some high-quality footage for use in this episode.
The Cherokee was followed up in 1983 with a new unibody SUV, while reducing size to the compact segment. It still retained it's RWD/4WD capabilities as a proper off-roader, and quickly became a popular seller for AMC & Jeep, which is one of the reasons why in 1987 Chrysler Corporation bought out AMC. The Cherokee continued into the millennium until the 2001 model year when it was replaced with a new modern design for the time.
This generation was renamed to the Liberty in the North American market while retaining the Cherokee nameplate in markets like Europe. The first generation Liberty had a short production run and was replaced after the dissolution of DaimlerChrysler in 2008 with a new boxier design language. This Liberty was replaced once again by the current generation Cherokee which was launched as a 2014 model year.
Our facelift model is configured with the Altitude trim, along with over $7,000 in options including the 2.0L turbocharged 4 cylinder engine which produces 270 horsepower, 295 lb-ft of torque. We go over some of the design changes with the 2019 facelift, along with the engine and transmission specifications. We then take the 2020 Jeep Cherokee Altitude on a comprehensive road test to talk about it's engine, transmission issues some customers have complained about, and how this vehicle performs as a daily driver on the road.

Quick note on the driving segment audio, I tried two different recording methods and still had significant audio distortion. I haven’t found a solution based on the gear I’m using to eliminate the issue, but I’m going to experiment some more with it this week.

I like the new and improved test drive glad to see you back in action mate I love this car my brother owned the 2000 model and I got the chance to drive it .. it was amazing experience it had great road presence .. brings me to my college days ..as for this generation it still looks good with great features as well ..as usual very informative content I liked the history segment thanks for sharing mate

The 2000 Cherokee will always be the greatest Cherokee for me, that generation looks so cool even today. I saw one this week when filming the Wrangler!

The engine power sounds attractive enough, however, the interior looks like it's from a car that cost 20k less

Lots of plastics. The price is ultimately my complaint with this one, I'd rather go CX-5 Signature and save a few thousand while trading off some of that potential off-road capability.

The first generation is still a great design, I spot them on the road from time to time. That's an SUV to hold onto if you find one in great shape.

I take the Pentastar V6 over that 2.0 turbo. More reliable and consistent and helps with the transmission weirdness better than 2.0 turbo.

The Pentastar with the eTorque system is my new favourite, I think these mild-hybrids will be the future of any non EV/PHEV/HEV vehicles moving forward.

Same here, at least FCA/Jeep gives customers the option for that. Some really don't want leather seats or sunroof, but want to enjoy the higher tech usually reserved on top-trims.

A lot of factors would go into that, you'd be best to visit your local dealer or use the manufacturer's website to estimate payments based on your personal information.

With this color looks very different because basicaly all Cherokee or Compass i ever see were white and of course diesel. But overall i prefer Compass rather than this, the "real" Cherokee is the Grand

The Compass seems to be the way people are going these days. While I see tonnes of pre-facelift Cherokees here, the Compass offers a lot of what this does for almost $10k less.
