History of the Silver Libertad 

Lol I just bought a 1985 for $50. I liked it a lot and couldn't resist. To be fair I didn't find them almost anywhere for much less if not more.

Been waiting for the 2020 LIbertade forever.

My grandpa on my mom’s side was born in Mexico City. His family moved to south Texas when he was a boy. Mexican coins have always been special to me. I have one of all three types as well as many other Mexican coins. Thanks for a great video.

Thanks for doing the history of my favorite coin. Father Hidalgo is the "Father of the Mexican Revolution" and his remains are interred at the base of that statue in Mexico City. Gorgeous coin! Can't wait for the 2020.

In Mexico’s Federal Law (Ley Monetaria Federal) the 2nd. Article Bis, gives gold & silver Coins minted by BANCO DE MEXICO (Casa de Moneda is its institution for coinages) legal value like circulating pesos bills at the Exchange rate in international markets. Conditions: . Minted by Casa de Moneda (Banxico) . No nominal value printed in the coin. That’s why Libertas are better than the “Centenario” family. . Has to have the purity of the metal ex: .999 gold/silver as Libertad. And the total weight in the coin 1oz or xx grs.... Hope find this informative. God bless. 👍

I like the Libertad as well. Lived in Mexico for a couple of years so they are some of my favorite coins.

Can confirm that you can buy and sell Libertads in Mexican banks. Was there a few months ago and bought a couple at Banco Azteca -- the other banks might not always have them

Of all 4 types of Libertads, Type I is my fav! - Type 1 1982 All caps ONZA, lettered edging, and a front facing Angel, one coat of arms on obverse Type 2 1991-1995 they wrote OnZa, and and the edge was reeded, one coat of arms Type 3 1996-1999 Larger coin, and the angel was moved to more of a side view, Type 4 2000-present Multi coat of arms

Love the Libertads... especially the older ones, the luster on those are just amazing!! And I like the lettered edges too.

If you happen to go across the border into Mexico, you will definitely find a Banco Azteca. Some consider it to be a phony bank, or a bank for the poor or low-middle class. One of its largest shareholders is Hugo Salinas Price, perhaps the biggest proponent of monetizing silver in Mexico since the 90s. The branches you´ll find might look strange at first because they are very small impenetrable booths always located inside a home appliances store called Elektra, also property of Salinas Price. But, I consider it to be one of the richest banks in the country because they usually always have ounces on existence, and no other large commercial bank that I know of deals with so much physical silver. You can purchase only 1 OZ Libertads with cash, are guaranteed to come directly from the Central Bank of Mexico, always inside a capsule, and in an acceptable condition... but the downside is that you'll get whatever year they have available, and they don't let you really check them. You are expected to just pay for them and leave. I may be biased, but in my opinion some of the "poorest" or low-middle class people in Mexico have more physical ounces in their possession today than any other group, if you believe in categories. My point is that a major and unexpected shift in wealth will be seen in Mexico. The few smart people will not be so "poor" after all. "I am silver and exact. I have a 1985 Silver Libertad. I just ordered a 1982 Silver Libertad. Hopefully I'll have it next week. I'm trying to collect all of the years.

Very informative video. I live thousands of miles from Mexico but still find the Libertads my favorite coins due to their beautiful, well-struck designs. I was able to snag a few denominations from Monument Metals recently. What I found interesting is how you pointed out which side is the obverse and which side is the reverse. This is totally opposite of what I expected. Who determined this? If so, I find it interesting that when you shop for coins, whether online vendors, feeBay, social networking groups, everyone posts the obverse of the coins, no matter the country. Now you're effectively saying that the Libertad's reverse is always the one being depicted in photos? Looking at the coin, everything seems to point to the opposite of what you're stating, which I feel you must have learned from doing deeper research. Thanks again.

You should always hold any coin or medal only by the edge. Even if you are wearing gloves (which is a bad idea because they make it hard to grip the coin).

I never order from ebay until now I pre-ordered some 2020 libertads from mexicancoinbroker it says he is an official distributor for the mexican mint . Also I preordered from ISPMEX fyi.

Love me the Libertad, but I am actually starting to doubt they will release 2020 version. It’s been delayed 5x (I think because of COVID). I went to their mint website but my ability to translate info their is poor. If we have a member of the silver community who is fluent in Spanish, maybe they can check it and report back here. There is also a “contact us” form on their website, but again, we need someone fluent in Espanol to do the inquiry

Negative, the value of libertads is not based on silver price, is based on libertad price. Which is higher than 1 ounce of silver price. I have sold and bought libertads at the banks in Mexico. Now, that obviously doesn't mean that the price of silver doesn't affect the price of the libertad, it absolutely does. When silver price is down the coin will lose value and gain value when it goes up. But it's value backed by the banks and the government is always slightly above the silver value for it. This is the reason why people sell libertads to the bank instead of selling them anywhere else as just silver. Plus, old libertads have more value, those get sold as libertads in the regular market.
