Hey, enjoyed the vid! Had me reaching around the back of my phone, searching for the tracking control. :) I sure do miss the video store era. Subbed to your channel.

I shopped at all the major chains and I also worked at Blockbuster, Video King, Hollywood Video, and I was a store manager at my own Movie Gallery.

@@FanZceneVids yes it was pretty cool getting free movies. I got to watch everything and definitely saw more movies than I do nowadays.

I actually had the privilege of working at Family Video until we closed in 2020! Was a cool and interesting video! Video stores will be missed!

Ah that's awesome that your store survived right up until 2020! Was it still popular for rentals or did you just sell the DVD's off for the last couple years?

Man what a throwback. Good stuff FanZcene. Growing up most spots we visited were local little mom & pop type spots. They would have 1 or 2 copies of any given movie and if it was out, then you waited and waited or maybe put yourself on the list and got it sooner. But when we'd try older stuff while waiting for the 'new movies' we always ended discovering great movies. Eventually Blockbuster came along, wasn't the same but even that had a charm.

Thank you Dreamland 🤘 I too remember going and having to wait for movies but finding older movies, specifically the Universal Monsters, love them. Blockbuster definitely changed the game, good times 📼

Ah, those commercials were like mainlining nostalgia! I loved going to the video rental store, especially the independent mom and pop ones. They always had the best selection. As a kid, the horror section was always cool to explore as I really wasn't allowed to watch them so I would just read the back covers and imagine what the movie was like.
@FanZceneVids
@FanZceneVids 2 года назад
The nostalgia flowed over me when putting this together. Mom and Pop stores and Blockbuster is where I lived. The horror section was the best for sure, hope you got to see some of the movies later. Did your imagination match the movies?
@williammatthews693

@@FanZceneVids Well I'm a horror fan at heart for sure, ESPCIALLY since they were forbidden to me as a kid. Most of them were never quite as scary as I imagined they would be , especially the slashers, but I also have a special place in my heart for slashers since I longed to see those as a kid. I mostly look at them now as harmless fun. Great docu-short friend!

@@williammatthews693 Thanks, very appreciative. Same here I a huge 80s horror and slasher fan, just great fun movies. The video store was like a second home to me.

Hi, I enjoyed your video on the history of video rental shops. It was forty years (1982) ago that I got my first video cassette recorder. At the time my family and I were members of three video rental shops. They located in the South of England, which is were I live. They were Video Scene in Cove, Vantage Video in Fleet and Flicks Video in Farnborough. Every weekend we would always get a video to watch, if there was nothing good on television to watch. These three video rental shops were in business for about ten years, until Blockbuster Video came to Farnborough in 1992. It finished these three small outlets, because the Blockbuster in Farnborough was massive, and now that has closed down.

Hi Duncan, thank you for the kind words and the great comments. I miss the video store so many great times to be had. It's ashame that Blockbuster put out your local ones. I wish all of them big and small could still be open.

1 video rental store appeared in my city. It's the only one in my city that exists. I went the other day and the selection was small. It had other things to buy to make the money it needed to survive. It had a copy machine like at the library. It wasn't organized at all. They charge $2.50 for rent for 2 days. No new releases. They had a special $5 for 3 rentals at once for 2 days. The store person talked to the 1 customer ahead of me for a loooong time. After 12 minutes in line my niece finally gave up and we put the DVDs and Blu Ray back and her ice cream back. She was more patient than me as I wanted to leave after 8 minutes. She insisted we stay cuz she really wanted the ice cream. I wanted her to have the fun experience of renting at a video rental store. But that was a horrible experience. Especially not a good impression for a first time customer.

I’m surprised to learn that 20th Century-Fox was in financial difficulty in the fall of 1977. Star Wars was a few months into its first run and the money should have been pouring in.

greg, Looking at some of these commercials for some of these video stores is quite fascinating lately, i have been Looking at some youtube videos where people have been trying to Recreate the video store But inside their Home apparently it is in their Basements one notable example, is Cinemassacre's when he attempted to basically have a video store in his home that has Multiple formats that does have a element quite similar to Blockbuster where apparently the vhs's are on the shelf and same can be said with a lot of other people too as james explains in another video he did about the movie room he made, he basically wanted to Recreate a video store

$10 a day?!!! Im well aware the vhs movies were crazy expensive and would remain so right until the advent of dvds (for reasons that escape me) but that just seems greedy. I guess he knew what he was doing
