god i love that this video isn’t edited to remove all the breathing and pauses in between talking. it just feels more human, barely anyone is making videos like this anymore.

I wish i could have found out about trip hop earlier, this kind of music literally changed me as a person, i generally like how this music makes me feel, some kind of relaxed trance, my thoughts concentrated, idk its just a great feeling, especially when riding in metro, it just suits the environment. Tricky, massive attack, crystal method, fluke, hybrid, cinephile, hooverphonic etc

fam, I discovered Portishead at absolute random around 2009-2010, and the second Beth's voice hit I was hooked forever. I've listened mostly to hardcore/metal/metalcore/punk stuff back than, was playing in death metal band and also listened a lot to jazz and old-school hip-hop, but this one song, "Roads", that was a complete revelation for me. Really, I've never ever heard a sound like that, I've never heard a vocals blended together with an instrumental that way, it was dark, and lush, and little bit harsh, and beautiful. It felt like everything I've discovered sonically, from everything I've heard in metal, in jazz, in hip-hop, just felt into place, suddenly music started to make sense in a ways that was previously unknown even to my imagination. Portishead, Tricky, Slow Train Soul, Sneaker Pimps, De-Phazz and later Archive, Hooverphonic, Sevdaliza and some of FKA Twigs, man this is just slaps. Those downtempo, acid-jazz and trip-hop artist paved my way to some British IDM, grime, dubstep and also ambient. This one song back in a cold 2009-2010 winter changed the way I play and produce music forever

Pork Recordings is another goated trip-hop/downtempo label worth checking out - Baby Mammoth's works in particular. Really gives you that gritty "background music" vibe in a good way.

I was 18 in 1993. I’ve never felt more connected to a genre. Most of my favorite songs of all time are trip-hop. I’m really into the south London jazz scene now, like Jordan Rakai, Tom Misch, Alphmist, etc… I’m an American but all me favorite music in my entire life has came out of England

Truly, thank you so much for this. Years ago I found it frustrating to find 'my' preference in a music store. All of the labels for music styles seemed to miss. Also went thru phases, jazz, R&B, pop that didn't seem like pop at the time, it's been reclassified. lol My son gave me a tip about using stuff like Pandora, enter the 'song', not the band, it will suggest more similar options of 'new to me' stuff. I'm also mood oriented. Thrash metal can help get the house clean. If I tried I couldn't name all of the bands I've seen. There have been dry spells that seemed void of any new interesting stuff. And hearing a new style has become rare. Late '60's to the '70's was a burst of creativity. I don't recall any friends that liked both Pink Floyd and Kate Bush. I actually had to spell Bjork in a court deposition. She was rarely on the radio, but she was that day and I was listening when stopped at a traffic light, I was unexpectedly hit hard by another vehicle. I remember saying that there are 2 little dots...... Wish I could see the algorithms that suggested this. Trip Hop (+Downtempo) it is! Liked and subscribed. Thanks again from New Orleans! Y'all Have Fun Now!

You’ve got the most British face I’ve ever seen in my life. Maybe that hat is a contributing factor. Cool video💥 Good on you for being interesting with 0 production value. I’m not being facetious. I mean it. Seriously. You’re getting by on knowledge and personality alone🧠

This was extremely helpful thank you so much for clarifying this genre of music. My new EP, The Hidden Door - is starting to get some good reviews out in the UK 🇬🇧 and in London. Someone said it was Trip-Hop and I hand no idea what that even means. I always loved bjork, Portishead, Moby and Radiohead. Like you said it’s all in the mainstream now. Very cool.
