Keep in mind that the Democratic-Republicans weren't often called that at the time. They were usually just called Republicans. We call them Democratic-Republicans or Jeffersonian Republicans today mostly to help avoid confusion with the modern Republican party.

The only area I was concerned about and so I did some little research on is that the Democrats weren’t in office from Truman to the 1980’s, unless I misunderstood you. In any case, after Truman we had Dwight D. Eisenhower who was Republican from 1953-1961, Richard Nixon and Gerald R Ford from 1969-1977 (Both Republican’s, after JFK and LBJ (Democrats) THEN we had Ronald Reagan. So, no there was a rotation after Pres. Truman

the fact that i knew that the confederates were the old democrats that were pro slavery makes me feel good, i was telling a black liberal sister that the democrats are the pro slavery party and she kept arguing that it was the republicans and their racist confederate flags, i told her no that originally the old democrats that lost the civil war were the ones who rocked the confederate flag and that the democratic that she supports and follows are the plantation and she is living in their plantation 😂 she was so upset, i told her she was brainwashed due to propaganda and indoctrination in democratic schools 😂

When they uncork the bottle, a genie appears and offers three wishes. One to each of them. The genie not being well versed on the "Rules of Etiquette" insists that Kevin have the first wish. After a moment of indecision, Kevin demands that all the members of both the House and Senate be made republican. The genie snaps his fingers, and Kevin suddenly finds himself standing on the floor of the House surrounded by nothing but fellow republicans. Nancy, in an act of self-preservation, insists that she is entitled to the inverse of Kevin’s wish. The genie snaps his fingers, and as with Kevin, Nancy finds herself on the House floor; every seat occupied by a like-minded Democrat. Barack immediately realizes the profound effects both Kevin and Nancy’s wishes would have on both the republican and democratic parties, should either wish be permitted; and vowed to have no part of it! Barack prayed that his, the third and final wish, be to rescind and deny both Nancy and Kevin’s wishes respectively. For the third and final time the genie snaps his fingers and reinstates the status quo. The genie is stupefied by Barack’s choice of wishes and asks him: Could it be that you are willing to endure gridlock, partisan name-calling and finger pointing rather than exploit an unfair advantage? So what I just learned was both of these party flip flop back and forth in favor of what the people (citizens) want depending on what the major issues of that time was. So that way nobody else can form a party to go against the two. Might as well call them the Managerial Party because that is what they basically are.

So to all you "We must save our Democracy" people. In what year did America become a Democracy? Hmm? Don't know? Allow me to enlighten you, We are Not a Democracy we are a "Constitutional Republic" as in the rule of Law not a Mob rules democracy. Now find the word Democracy in this our Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag, "I pledge allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic for which it stands, one Nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all."

I don't think it's accurate to say the New Deal is what caused the party switch in the South. The Democrats were untouchable in state and federal elections in the "Solid South" throughout all of FDR's terms. And the New Deal coalition was the height of Democratic power throughout the country since the Jacksonian era. A lot of poor white southerners, conservative as they were, were also hit hard by the great depression and were generally as supportive of FDR's reforms (which provided a lot of aid to struggling farmers) as urban workers were. And even the Republicans, like Alf Landon, were mostly pro-New Deal as well at that time. Because they knew as well as FDR (who didn't start out so left-leaning either) that an anti-union, austere, pro-business platform was unwinnable with most of the American people. They still couldn't compete with FDR, but it goes to show that the need for some significant degree of reform and intervention was practically a consensus at that time across party lines, and even their respective conservative/liberal factions. It was much more the 1960s during Johnson and the civil rights act/great society reforms that pushed the southern conservative wing away from the democrats and toward the republicans. First they just formed their own "State rights democrat" party in support of segregation, but then Nixon's southern strategy capitalized on this rupture in the democrats to get a foot hold in the south for the republican party. And then the increasingly influential evangelical religious right forged an alliance with the republicans and really won over the "bible belt" south (and rural white americans generally) during Reagan, while pushing away any remainder of the Republican liberal wing to the Democrats.

Conservativism is fluid... It moves from party to party. Thus, the reason you'll hear a republican say... I'M a CONSERVATIVE first.

If you believe there was a party switch then please explain why many of us republicans have been republican from the beginning and our ancestors fought on the side of the north to free slaves. It doesn’t sound like a switch to me. Also our government has been changing our history books for quite some time and this is one of the lessons they’ve been teaching people. Why the change?

The modern Republican platform comes from Dwight D. Eisenhower and Reagan’s political views came from failed presidential candidate Barry Goldwater. Prior to Goldwater the Republican Party was more Libertarian in its views. Just my take but a good video, cheers.

I was waiting for the mention of Republican Presidential canidate Barry Goldwater who is said to be the founder of modern Conservative politics of the Republican party. He also was against the Civil Rights Bill of 1964. It was Goldwater who inspired Ronald Reagan.

Southern Democrats did not switch to Republicans from Roosevelt. The South voted for FDR in every single election. However, South definitely was not as hardcore democrat as before. Also, Republicans were able to win the South before the Roosevelt (Hoover won Florida, North Carolina and more), so I don't think that's true.

Is it too simple to say the two parties completely switched sides within 70 years?

I voted for a specific party in 2008 and 2012. And politically speaking it was my biggest regret. I wish we had the 2 party system explained to me like this in HS. They gaslit us into thinking " free this free" that was morally virtuous. And then I started working and paying taxes and lifted the veil. Suffice to say I left that party and will never look back. Hopefully one day we can all attend a baseball game again without wanting to molotov each other's homes.

We need a multi-party system with more than two parties. Everyone's political views are far more nuanced now than they were in the past. There are many more issues, and if you look you can see definite 'groups' within each party we have today. We even have names for each group, but only one party. Other countries have three, four, or even more, political parties. Our two-party system has created political gridlock in the House and the Senate, a deep national divide, and devolved into finger-pointing and political name-calling.

Im a former History teacher. Wow there's a lot of missing information and disinformation in this video. For instance only one Democrat switched parties, Strom Thrumond. The Democrat Republican Party became the Democrat Party. Federalists and Whigs ended up being the Republican Party. I could go on and on. Thank God there are only about 700 likes.

Also, some time in history there was a switch in political parties. Republicans used to be much more liberal than conservative, and Democrats used to be much more conservative than liberal. If slavery was an issue today, the Democrats would essentially most likely support abolition, and Republicans oppose abolition because of their conservatism and unwillingness to change with times.
