Following the history-bounding idea, I've really learned that you can enjoy aspects of past fashions without looking over the top just by learning about the layering. One of my next goals is to get into coreset covers; I'm someone with very wide shoulders and a bust measurement that's much smaller then clothing manufactures expect (meaning my underbust/ribcage is a big number for an underbust, but the bust measurement doesn't differ much) so I'm often left with a... Sad empty space at the front of store-bought clothes. Coreset covers seem like a good solution because it seems like, from every example on youtube, they add volume and fill in space without creating a drastic, eye-catching difference. We're so use to modern shapewear creating dramatic changes in appearance, but when you look back in history it's interesting to see how the focus was really about laser-precise adjustments and identifying the little tweaks that could then fix an entire outfit.

So I'm going with Regency and plain viking style clothing. It should be quite interesting because I am know for making costumes. However these dresses will be made of more of a modern look . I think.

OH MY GOSH, yes to Target!! I am not even truly "plus" size (just busty, so I often shop up and take in)... it's like they have no idea how to size up their styles, and the *arm holes* are ginormous... whyyyy? This is a great video! Thanks for putting all of this info out there :)
@roslynholcomb

Target sizing is insane though I admit I am a tough fit. I’m tall but busty short waisted with short arms so it’s not totally their fault. My complaint is that their blouses are cut short. I rarely tuck in a blouse and like them to fall past high hip and theirs seldom do. And if they’re too short for my proportions I can’t imagine how women with long torsos deal though they probably do tuck in.

What is the deal with giant arm holes? I'm busty and short, (short waisted and short hipped) and can't ever find a layering tshirt to fit at Target, Walmart, Gap, Old Navy or any thing in that similar spectrum. Its either smoosh your boobs or don't lift your arms. I"m only 5'1" and still find a lot of "fashion" shirts to be too short. I"m not comfortable with my belly hanging out, plus it's cold. The remedy is to buy trendy high waisted pants that come up to your under bust, because that's comfortable. I just mocked up a pair of trousers for myself, hopefully I can find some fashion fabric I like to make them out of soon. Hopefully that means I won't have to try to find jeans in a store ever again.

You're a brilliant writer, Rebecca, I always get so much info from you! BTW I was in Target recently and there was a ton of prairie-style clothing, like an overwhelming amount. As a person who is in this weird limbo between "my measurements are on the lower margin of plus size and I feel like an imposter calling myself plus-size" and " I could technically buy off the rack clothing in high street shops on the upper size range but defintely do not feel represented nor comfortable in it" wedged in with a "I do not like modern fashion and do not want to support fast fashion but OH THE PINTUCKS AND GATHERS AND RUFFLES" This video is suuuuper helpful, but also throws in a lot of questions for me personally, being so interested in soooo many different decades and silhouettes.... I've inherited parts of my grandmothers closet, since she's moved into an assisted living facility. She has some beautiful hand-woven wool skirts that do remind me of previous historic eras even if she made them in the 60's or 70's. I want to use these pieces as much as possible, without looking like I'm in a stage play, and history bounding is perfect for that!
@kirabowie

You totally nailed it with Target & plus sizes! I like to size up my tops as I prefer them to skim my body (so they can hide what I want hidden) & I picked a pretty striped t-shirt in Target. OMG! I tried it on at home & while it fit nicely in the arms & skimmed my hidden "assets" perfectly, it was way too BIG in the bust! XD I'm built like my granny with a big stomach & a comparatively small bust. Not every plus sized woman has a HUGE bust to go with the rest of her, yet I have no trouble finding t-shirts that fit in Walmart (bust that actually fits like it should & the rest nicely skims my body). Honestly, I haven't found anything since the pre-pandemic in Target that looked nice & that I actually still wear, except for a couple of skirts with elastic waists. Now you've got me wishing I had known I could find pieces in places like Old Navy & the Gap! I'm more of a hippie/boho with a touch of 50's & 70's kinda girl, which is pretty easy to find, but still, knowing I could find stuff at the mall in stores I don't normally go in as they're always sooo BUSY, would have had me wandering in there. XD

Also from/living in the Pacific Northwest. I never before connected that my love of plaid is related to my geographic roots but that makes sense. As for plus-sized history bounding, I would add that vintage repro shops tend to be more size inclusive. I bought many retro-inspired outfits from Modcloth (which caters to more mainstream looks overall) and Unique Vintage (which focuses exclusively on retro). Unique Vintage isn't the only company out there that does that. I've been eyeing Revival UK for 1940s.

I was a teen in the 80's. Back then it was easier to find vintage clothes and pill box hats. And many MTV pop stars wore vintage style clothing . Stevie Nicks, Cindy Lauper, Madonna, Prince, Boy George and Adam Ant, to name a few. Growing up I remember only 3 Disney princesses. Snow White, Cinderella, and Sleeping Beauty. We also had a real life Princess Diana that influenced fashion. So I incorporated things I liked from them and old movies in my personal daily fashion. We didn't have a name for it. So maybe I was a history bounder, back in my history.💃

I've gotten a few history bounding-ish pieces from Torrid, thanks to their Outlander collection, and Modcloth, prior to their acquisition (I'm hoping they'll return to some better offerings again now that they are independently owned). I have my history bounding planned, fabric bought, I am literally building up a cutting table to lay it out on. The center of my wardrobe in the Eighties were silk skirts based on 18th cent petticoats, though I didn’t know it then. Going to replicate those, with the Bernadette Banner Poofy Pirate Shirts to match. Maybe belted with a sash, I really do love a pirate thing! I have broad shoulders so shirts work well for me. All one color does too, it’s easy to toss on a two piece thing and run out. These have no patterns and are putting my toe into 18th century construction methods which fascinate me. I love hats. I love how you said that history bounding can be anything you want it to be. It reminds me if a girl in the history bounding group on FB who wanted to make a full Edwardian dress out of Hawaiian fabric. I haven't seen any updates as I am hardly ever on social media anymore. Me personally I love the long skirts of the late Victorian and early Edwardian eras. I have the walking skirt from TV and have so far made 3. I just recently got my trust singer back from being serviced and have plans for making some vests to match my skirts. I usually pair this off with a pair of modern western boots that i have had for ever and a T-shirt. Sort of a mix and match of the modern era and the early bustle era, minus the bustle. With the coming summer I am looking at making some regency dresses. I'm in Arizona and to say it gets hot is an understatement. But like you I don't go anywhere anymore aside from out to the chicken coop to get eggs and to the grocery store. Occasionally the feed store. Maybe now that the mask mandates have been lifted and things opening back up we can get out and go places again and I will have an excuse to dress up again. I really want to try Morgan Donner's bustle chair for my next trip to the zoo. That way I can sit down when I need to and let the kids do their thing. 😉

I didn't realize you lived in PNW until you mentioned it and I looked at your description box haha I'm from WA as well. I live in Stanwood (originally from Bellingham) I'm trying to dip my toe into historybounding. I particularly like the 1940s cuts on me. The soft A line skirts work really nice for my short torsoed body. I find anything too poofy and flared out tends to emphasize my hips more than I'd like and overwhelm my shape. I've been buying shirtdresses and found a lovely pair of high-waisted wide-leg pants that look amazing with a blouse tucked in. I really like Poshmark. I've had good luck finding things on there for reasonable prices and many of the items were new with tags! Everything I've gotten so far has been modern but with clear inspirations from a time period and from brands like ModCloth and other retailers. I'm excited to keep finding gems to add to my closet!

I’ve never been over-the-top, & I’ve never really settled into a single ‘signature style’- I’ve found myself leaning towards ‘vintage’ styles for years; I have things like a 70’s-inspired faux corduroy skirt- & a few years ago, I got two Peter Morrissey dresses from BigW that had a ‘50’s-esque ‘feel’ to them, & got two Edwardian-inspired tops from KMart/ Target in Australia- _years_ ago- but because they’ve gotten a little snug over time, I want to remake them in cotton or linen (they’re poly-nylon). I also got a 1920’s-style hat from an op shop, originally from Miller’s- for the bargain price of $5. Until Morgan helped popularise the term, ‘history-bounding’, I didn’t really know how to describe what I did in my dressing style... it’s so interesting to hear so many people talk about it, outside of things like conventions & history fairs & the like...

Thank you for this. As a - ahem - fluffier person, and being taller as well (long waisted being the worst spot - plus sized + long waisted is a frustrating combo!) I've been struggling with clothing period. I hate a lot of modern styles, I'm not comfortable in what I can afford and. . .yeah. Well, I'm not alone in the struggle, I'm sure. However, I adore historical styles. Not every aspect of it. . .of course, and its not always practical for modern life, but I like the idea of being able to wear something I actually like. And historical clothes do so much for hiding so much. lol I am leaning towards the medieval period - aiming for the Viking apron dress mostly, I think. Good place to start, anyway, as I learn to sew and make my own pieces. But, I LOVE the historybounding concept that makes it more flexible than costuming. I can shorten the skirt, I can NOT wear the jewellery (its not bad, but to me it seems more costumey and. . .not really my style if I'm going to wear it on a normal basis.), I can wear modern boots with it, I can wear leggings underneath and a modern jacket. I mean. . .it works! I think I can carry it off out in public if it's plainer. :D I'd eventually like to make my own patterns and outfits, but. . .I have to start at the basics first, I think. lol Rectangles, triangles and squares is a good place for it! I love the concept of historybounding because it's so. . .freeing. You can wear what you like and go as far as you like and mix and match to your heart's content. Why not?

I'm a plus size (245lbs, 5'1") history bounder. I love how feminine I feel in the skirts. I mostly make skirts, three dresses so far. I'm having trouble with the bodices, although I do keep trying. The problem is that my chest and my stomach come out to the same point, and with the exception of regency dresses which has the waistband right under the bust, there's no historical bodice that accentuates the bust as I would like them to be, yet still has those great big flowing princess skirts that make me feel so amazing. I would love to go one hundred percent historically accurate. In fact that is my goal to achieve 100% historically accurate in all of my garments in my closet by the time I'm 50. I just have to find a decade that has HUGE skirts and shows off the bust like an undersize tank-top.

I know the last time I bought clothing (a couple years ago), City Chic (Australian based plus sized store, but I believe the US can order online) was doing a LOT of vintage style pieces. City Chic is also generally very high quality, and it’s the only plus size store in Australia that didn’t make me feel like I was over 60. But... they’re also fairly expensive. Dresses are usually over $100 (AU, I have no idea what they are in USD), and blouses usually over $60. Seeing as I’m a poor, it’s just usually not an option for me, though back when I was working I was a big fan of both their business wear and their their casual vintage stuff. They also sell formal-type dresses as well, which is great, because most formal dress stores don’t cater to plus sized women. So that may be an option for vintage lovers out there who want high quality at what is a fairly decent price (given that quality). I haven’t seen much in the way of historical styles, apart from the odd Victwardian blouse, but we’re looking at one or two over the last few years, so they don’t offer much in that sort of style. Edit: I just had a look, and there are a few blouse options that are quite nice, but they’re all $70-$90. Definitely not affordable for me. It’s great that they aren’t fast fashion (I recognise more than a few of those tops from the lag time I was in there a couple years ago- if something is timeless, they will stick it for years, which is why I say they’re not fast fashion), and their clothes are good quality, it’s just way out of my poor arse’s reach. I’ll stick to making stuff out of secondhand bedsheets, I think.

I like history bounding because I can’t choose a favourite era. My goal is to have outfits from basically every era I like, from late medieval through Edwardian. I also tend toward the more historically adequate than inspired, I just go for more working class styles, no large skirt supports (they don’t fit in the wheelchair anyway), and in mostly neutral colours with a pop of different colour here and there that both don’t stand out, and can be mixed and matched. I also do wear corsets and stays, because I need the back and bust support. I’d be wearing them even in 100% modern clothing. It’s just that they do work really well for history bounding. I’m currently working on some sets of 18th century working class outfits (short jackets and petticoats. The petticoats can be worn with basically any other era, and I find tie on pockets to be the easiest thing for me- handbags and wheelchairs just don’t mesh well. So I’ll also eventually convert all my other skirts to having pocket slits, regardless of what era they’re from. I also “history bounding” my pyjamas. I find shifts and chemises to be the nicest, most comfy nighties anyway, and I do pretty much live in them (as I’m disabled, and I need to wear comfy clothes I can lie in bed in, even during the day). It’s also a mood boost to be wearing these things, instead of ratty modern nighties. I also made a summer weight wrapper from old floral bedsheets, and it’s so pretty. It’s great for when I have people coming into the house, but I don’t want to get actually dressed (so for deliveries, care workers, etc). Having something nice to wear is such a mood boost. So for those stuck in pyjamas or lounge wear, I do recommend having pretty versions of those things. You’d be surprised at how much of a positive difference it makes to mental health!

I’ve got a range of clothing eras from early medieval (9th century-ish), 18th century stays/petticoats, late Georgian menswear, late Victorian early Edwardian. I’ve been wearing long skirts and my American duchess buckle boots for ages, and have added houndstooth black and white bicycle bloomers, and an Edwardian walking skirt to the mix Will probably be fiddling around and adding more. Once I’m done with these stays. -.-

I think I've been historybounding without knowing what it was called. As a teenager in the 70s and since I let my hair grow long. Unlike the hippies, though, I always loved braids. I have never learned to dutch braid but I like the crown styles. I have longed to wear the bustles and acquired a blue taffeta gown at a rummage sale back then. It dragged on the ground. I never knew until recently about the bustle cage and other required undergarments :) Thank you for that. I also love ruffles and puffed sleeves. At JCPenney's I recently found a plain white buttonup, collared cotton blouse with a 3/4 length puffed sleeve. XXL was the largest size it came in in the Misses section. Style was not available in plus size section. I could wear the XXL size with wiggle room. This blouse was selling fast. I have a question on how to press a puffed sleeve. Directions just said wash and dry. I hung it up right away but now it looks limp. I have a regular ironing board but don't want a crease in it. I want it a little starchy for body. Can't find the starch spray in store.
@janetburke2739
@janetburke2739 3 года назад
For ironing puffed sleeves without creases, you need is what is called a "tailor's ham" . They are kind of ultra-firm stuffed cloth pillow shapes used when ironing and tailoring clothes. You could probably find ready-made ones at Joann stores, but you can also Google "how to make a tailor 's ham" and get instructions (some have free patterns for it). I have two: a traditional ham shaped one that's good when you want to iron larger rounded areas like big puffy upper arm parts of sleeves without making the crease, and the relatively thinner cylindrical roll that's good for cuffs and forearms, etc.

@@LightExpeditions You are very welcome. The hams are also good for ironing bust darts on blouses and dresses. BTW, please keep looking for spray starch at local supermarkets, Walmart, or on line,, etc. Some place must still sell it. Good luck🍀 A quick P.S.: I had tried sleeve boards in the past to iron sleeves, but got better results/more fullness with the hams.

I've admired the Gibson Girl hair for so long. Finally my hair is just long enough to get that basic shape. I diyed a hair rat from dollar store supplies and it worked! Not perfect. Still working on technique so I haven't worn it out in public yet but soon. My general aesthetic is black denim with a plain t-shirt and ballet flats. I found some amazing bolero type jackets made from lace at a thrift store and surprisingly I found a beach cover-up made from lace at a little shop in Galveston so I've been wearing them with my t-shirts (when I say t-shirt I mean your typical solid color t, nothing with any prints or graphics). I'm not super into skirts or dresses but am trying to go for an Edwardian vibe. I'm currently searching for a nice cameo I can wear with my lace jackets. I found a perfect pair of vintage looking low pumps with that destinctive heel shape but dang it if they weren't my size so the search continues for footwear. I would love to have a pair of America Duchess shoes. Anyway. So I had my lace jacket on and my Gibson Girl hair and I was just hanging out and my teenager walked in and said, mom, you look beautiful why don't you dress like that more often? Up to that point I was worried that I wouldn't be able to be a part of the history bounding community because I only wear pants but when he said that to me I realized that I can! That sort of sealed the deal for me so now I'm officially working on my Edwardian-ish history bounding wardrobe. Thank you SO much for this video because you have really inspired me and helped me believe that I can do it even if I don't wear dresses and skirts. I just need to look for pieces that have that general feel.

i know a few years ago, H&M had some dresses that looked rather vintage in their store by my work's office. alas, i do not know if they had them in anything larger than a US size 12. it's difficult for me as a US size 24 gal to find clothing anyway, let alone items that would work for historbounding outfits. or, if a store does have a plus-size selection, you have to go online and hope to the gods that it will fit and look alright. (targets near me don't go higher than size 12, so if i find something that would look right, it's usually no larger than a L or XL when i need 3XL or 4Xl depending on the style) also, only thrift stores near me are Goodwill stores and all four locations lack anything higher than US size 22 in women's since that and US size 9 for shoes are the magic numbers for this area. if i knew how to use sewing patterns and machines, i would just make my own darn clothes lol
